LiteraryMary95 Today is day four in the arena. I awake to the arena eerily quiet. It seems too quiet. I start to eat the last three squirrels from yesterday’s haul, when a group of crows comes in my cave. They start to peck at me so I grab my spear and stab them. The first one I stab dies instantly. They are about five of them. I kill each one, but manage to get only bruises. The crows didn’t get near my eyes, although the few bruises I have are the size of small apples. I can manage to move without too much pain.

I think, I can't let that stop me. It will take the Gamemakers more to stop me because I’m a fighter.

I should probably set more animal traps, but first I’m going to the pond to bring down some of the swelling from the bruises. I go to the pond and I strip off my top layer, but keep on my undergarments. I walk into the pond and I feel instant relief. As I watch, my bruises’ swelling almost disappears, but are now the size of quarters. I quickly get air dried from the heat and get dressed because a cannon goes off. I fill my canteen with water, and then I decide to go put the animal traps down. After putting out traps, I go back to my cave to grab the crows that I killed. I think I will cook them to eat them. Why waste them, since food is scarce when you’re fighting for your life. I’ll just wait and cook them at sunset like the past couple days. I guess right now I’ll just do more things to make my stay in the cave a little more comfortable. I decide to gather tons and tons of moss to form a pillow since I have used my backpack as a pillow. Now that the pillow is taken care of and it’s sunset, I decide it’s best to cook the crows. I eat three of them.

As I eat, I wonder, What do I have to do to get a gift from sponsor. Maybe I have to make an alliance or kill a tribute.

I go back in my cave. I put my blanket on and lay on my moss pillow. I manage to stay up for the dead tributes’ face, the anthem, and the Capital seal. I fall asleep. Only Brent died today. A quarter of the tributes are dead...

Thank goodness, one of the Careers I know is dead. I will have an easier time fighting them off, I come to the realization and then I fall asleep.

((Okay Marilyn lets just assume that today is day 4 for us too. We got some action going, but I'll try to differentiate days batter after this ...))
((Brent))

After I call Cedar over, I get into attack position, looking for the fin I saw. I see it again, and it's huge. I yell "THERE! Over there! See it!?!?" Its speeding towards where we stood moments before, and I'm thinking, dang this thing is fast! When Cedar sees it, he says "Dude, im going to lower the net, be ready with your spear. Aim for between the eyes or behind the head, K?" I switch my position and get ready to stab behind the head, and while I'm reading myself, Cedar yells again ""You going to help us or what sweetheart?" Can he shut up, I'm trying to focus! But, Fade runs over, and I'm glad for some extra support.
After about a minute of intense waiting, I see a top fin, and then a head comes shooting at the net. I lunge forward and make a stab, right were Cedar told me to. It was slightly to the right, and the shark is damaged, but still moving. I stab again, slitting the body even more, but the shark is barely incapacitated. Cedar says, "Okay man, I think its hurt enough to drag to shore." Together we start dragging the not-quite-dead animal towards the rocky beach. Before I can react, I hear a knife whizzing by my head, and I duck, dropping the body and net, are whipping around to see what happened. I hear a thud, and Fade has gotten the knife into the shark. I reach for the body again. [but ...]
((^After the but, Cedar could possibly attack him???))

Brent is temporarily stunned by Fade's throw, and i realize that this is my chance. Before he can even react, i throw my knife whizzing through the air until it lodges in his shoulder blade, a good, but not lethal, hit. He roars with pain as he realizes, this was no misfire. Fade is too far away to do anything about it now, she can barely see what's happening. He spins to me, flinching at the pain of my blade that sunk so far into him that it's almost up to the hilt, although it was a short knife. "WHAT THE F*** WAS THAT FOR? " He screams.

i simply reply, "Only one winner dude. Plus, less time i gota babysit you. But seriously, thanks for bagin' this shark for us. i owe you one. Unfortunately, i don't think I'll be able to repay you before your death. Sorry!" As he's still recovering from his injury and the meaning of my words, i wrestle him to the ground and pin him there, although he's stronger than i am and we have a good, heated tussle, i handle the action a bit TOO easily as he gives in. "BRENT! IM COMING!!" Fade yells as she sprints towards us, unarmed. I curse to myself. I should have known that i couldn't keep this up forever! she would realize what i was doing to him eventually! i had underestimated her.

Swiftly, i pull my longest knife and bring it down hard on his chest. His breathing becomes uneven and shallow until he wheezes his last breath that sounds a lot like "Janie..." and slips away. The sound of the cannon echos through the walls of the cave in an erie symphony.

Fade stops, eyes wide with terror, not but 4 feet away. I pull out the dagger just as soon as she rearms herself as well, and we size each other up for a brief moment. I finally say, "He's gone. He was a danger to the BOTH of us Fade, it was only a matter of time before he would have gotten himself and/or one of us killed. Better to die a bloodless, honorable death than to get torn up by some terrible sea monster because he wanted to wear it's finns for a hat. Fade, i did him a favor. Wasn't it his dream to get out of this hellhole? well, i just helped him along. He's in a better place. anywhere is better than here."

As i give by speech, her eyes turn from predatory rage, to confusion, to understanding, to sadness, to anger again, then back to helplessness. Eventually, she's standing in front of me, arms limp at her sides, emotions mixed up like a hurricane inside of her, and tears threatening to stream down her face. She bends over, closes his eyes, and whispers something i can barely hear, then stands back up to face me again, looking for answers.

"Come on. Let's clean up this shark."

((OK? I wanted to keep the alliance going, but you can change it if you'd like. hope it was good enough for you, Brent was a great character. It was hard to think up a honorable way to kill him.))

It's not long before the hovercraft pops up and lifts him away back to the outside world. Fade and i watch him go up in silence, bowing our heads in respect. All of his weapons we bury under the rocks, they're just extra weight to be carrying around. Except for his sward, the one he recived by parachute. I pull it out of the now dead shark carcass and clean it with my shirt and some salty water from the lake until it sparkles. I offer it to Fade. "Here. he would want you to have it. His sponsors are your sponsors, after all." "Yea." she chokes out, "I know he would. but i think you should hold onto it. you're better with a sward than i am." While i know that's not true, i take the heavy thing and sheath it in my belt, along with my other large array of knives, and put my hand on her shoulder for support. she looks up at me, puffy eyed and....

((PLEASE TAKE IT FROM HERE SAM! wondering, would she kiss him? not that she loves him or anything, but just that right now, she's kinda emotional, and you know how crazy girls can get when they're emotional! plus, they could use it as a way to get sponsors. JUST ONE! NO MORE! or, none at all.))

((Fade, I didn't need to write about Brent's death from his perspective ...))
My throw hits the shark square, stunning my allies, but Cedar recovers faster. I start jogging backwards, scared he's coming after me, but it appears as if he isn't. I'm almost too far to make it out... No. He isn't coming after me, he's attacking Brent!!! I loose my head and go sprinting forward, knowing I'll be too late to do anything. I've dropped my pack and am mostly unarmed, I won't be any help. Is it too much to hope they take each other out?
As I finally have enough thought to grab a knife, Cedar says "He's gone ... Anywhere is better than here. ((see above for full quote))" and I'm a whirlwind of emotions. Im so filled with rage at first, that I can barely see, but them as I start to comprehend Cedar's words, my blind anger starts to ebb away, being replaced with a sadness. I know Cedar's right, Brent was dangerous, but he was home. Which makes me mad all over again, but I really know there's nothing I can do now, leaving me feeling helpless.
I'm just standing there, a complete wreck and I know Cedar could take me out too, but he just waits for me to recover... So I bend down and crouch in fetal position, telling my self Fade, you have one minute, pull yourself together. You have to get up and get back on your guard. You are in the Hunger Games. So I stand up.
I glance over at Cedar, unable to formulate a plan, but ready to do something else. He just says "let's clean up this shark" so we do.

Soon the hover craft comes and picks up Brent's body, and I almost loose it again. I don't, though, I can't let myself. In my zombie-like concentrated determination I help Cedar put the majority of Brent's weapons under a rock. Neither Cedar or I are very big, so his large array of spears, swords, maces, and the like are not of much help to us. But, when Cedar takes the sword he starts to clean it on his shirt, he tries to give it to me, saying "Here. He would want you to have it. His sponsors are your sponsors, after all." While I know he's right; it probably should be mine, I'm not sure I want it. The sword is filled with memories, good but painful and bad, filled with jealousy. So I just say "Yeah, I know he would, but I think you should hold onto it. you're better with a sword than I am" I really appreciate his willingness to give it to me, but I really can't bear having it.
Seeing that I'm upset, he sheaths the sword and puts his hand on my shoulder. In a rush of emotion and mixed feelings, I lean in and press my lips to his. He seems stunned at first, but he relaxes, letting me kiss him. Not only has he probably saved my life, as unhappy about it as I am, but he also has given me the gift of compassion. If only I was somewhere, anywhere but here, I could enjoy it, but I know the moment has to end and after a long minute, I pull back and just say "Thank you."

The water level raised by 60%, this made the water raise 18 feet higher. All the tributes climb on the nearest cliffs scared.
Things got worse for poor little Gaby, when the water started to rise, she was still asleep, but once it reached her neck she bolted up scared. No cliffs were around, she had to think fast, or she might drown! Even worse, a shark stalked around her. She held the knife, plotting her move!

I wake up on from my little cave home. I decide it’s best to eat the remainder of the crow meat because I don’t want it going bad.I get out of my cave and notice that there is a fire at the other end of the island.

I think, At least I know that one or more tributes are far away from me.

I walk toward my animal traps, but nothing is in them. As I approach the little pond to get some water and I’m half way there, I notice that the water raised a lot. I’m glad I was smart enough to find a cave with high elevation. As I search for a different water source, I hear another cannon fire. That makes fifteen left. I think that once the Careers find the other tributes the cannons will go off more. The Gamemakers are using the water to bring us closer together. I’m going to have to be extremely careful. I find another pond that is a bit bigger than the other one, but it’s in the opposite direction. I drink water and check my traps one more time. Fortunately, I found that I caught a rabbit. I cook it at sunset like usual and eat half of it. I hide my cave better now that the tributes are closer. I wait for the anthem to sound before coming out a little bit to see that the girl from Sam’s District to die. I guess she must have drowned. If four is alive, they must have survived since they live in water at home. I hear the anthem and go out to see who the dead tribute is. It's Kevin from District 2. That's good because that makes one less Career tribute. I get back in my cave and fall asleep, but still aware of oncoming tributes.

((Cedar, right after he put his hand on Fade's shoulder, before the arena flooded))

Suddenly, the puffy, sniveling girl i see before me becomes the hormonal teenager who, although she tries to hide it, she truly is. I have only a fraction of a second to process the mood switch before she leaps on me, pressing her lips to mine in a burning sensation. First there's shock, and something else too, the wild side of me. a lion in my chest roars in triumph as shock gives into hunger. Hunger, for some human connection that i've been starved of for such a long time. I picture my home. Her lips taste of sweet honey and salt, two of my absolute favorite things. The beast inside of me roars again as i feel a sensation i've never felt before. All of a sudden, I feel the urge to do more than kiss, to be close to her, to feel her warped in my arms. I realize i have let my mind wander to far. Slowly, we break away, and she looks up at me with grateful, wondering eyes and whispers, "Thank You." she leans her head into my chest and we stand there for a moment, taking in each other's closeness. "Fade." i say almost silently, my breath barely making out words as i whisper them into her hair so the cameras don't see my lips, "we can't do this. we're in the Hunger Games. Remember? we're allies, friends, maybe more than friends, but there's only one winner. Now I'm going to step back and look you in the eyes. nod if you understand how i feel." i step back, and as she nods, a single tear streams down her cheek. With my thumb, i wipe it away. "it'll be alright sweetheart. it'll be alright."

((Sam. Let's have them eat the shark before they get flooded out, K?))

((Haha its cool, I was just insanely bored cuz I didn't have practice today and stuff...))
((Fade, right after the thank you.))
I have no idea what his reaction is going to be, so I just stand, leaning on him, letting myself feel good for a minute. I'm pretty sure he liked because I sure did. But, my slight respite from the games had to end sometime. After another long minute, Cedar breathes into my hair "Fade, we can't do this, we're in the Hunger Games, remember? We're allies, friends, maybe more than friends, but there is only one winner. Now I'm going to step back and look you in the eyes. Nod if you understand how I feel." Then, he steps back and I give him a slight nod. His thoughts sound exactly like what I try to tell myself. In the next week or two, we're gonna die. At least one of us, maybe two. This is the true H*** the Gamemakers put us through. But, I know there's nothing I can do, so I straighten up, let a single tear run down my cheek, Cedar wipes it away with a rueful "It'll be alright sweetheart. It will be alright." And, I know he's right, I try my best to detach myself from my emotions. I'll sort this out when I get home. I have to get home, there is NO other option. So, I throw myself headlong into survival mode.

In honor of my new resolution, my new attitude, my ally's death, and my stomach's growling, I say "Let's eat this shark, I have a feeling we can't stay for long. I also think that these waterfalls are clean, let's eat, drink and rest." This day has been exhausting, and it'll well into the night.
Cedar prepares the shark, I have absolutely no experience with that sort of thing, while I gather water, distracting myself from the mess, I call my brain. Together we sit on a rock, eating the meat and taking small sips from water bottles. After a decent amount is gone, we wrap up the meat and hope to save it for later. Splitting up the food and water, we repack our packs. I offer to take first watch, I need sometime unobserved to cry myself out and strengthen my resolves.
An hour later, I'm sitting on a rock, two knives at the ready, and a bunch more, able to be acessed at a split second's notice. But really, I'm not paying much attention to any potential threats. I'm so mixxed up. All I can do is semi-silently cry, pissed off about the stupid games. I don't want to kill Cedar. Anybody else, I'll take out. I'm no wuss. But not him. I really do want to go home though, get back to the easy routine. But what will it cost me? Cedar turns in his sleep and I stiffen, not wanting to have to face him at this moment, but he just repositions himself and stills again. I know I have to be the one to go home, as much as I like him, it's gotta be me, it just has to be. Odds are against me, but if I work hard, I'll be fine. Which brings me back for my need to keep watch. So I shift around on my rock until I have a nice view of the surrounding watterlogged cave. Is it just me or has the water gotten higher? I must be imagining things...
((escape the flood soon after Fade wakes up Cedar for second watch?))

As i wipe away the tear, she gives a short, quick breath and seems to clear her plate of emotions. I see the fire return to her eyes and body as she straightens up and says, "Let's eat this shark, i have a feeling that we can't stay for long.((full quote above))" Happily to finally have something to eat, i skin the shark and deprive the carcass of anything edible. I cut off a ruff patch of skin and lay it on the rocks to dry, and pull a few teeth and hide them in different nooks and crannies around my outfit. You never know when these things might come in handy. I bring the meat over to where Fade sits and we roast over an open fire, letting the smoke rise to the uppermost walls of the grotto, then disappear. Fine. Let them find us. No one has a chance against us now. we're stronger than ever. We drink water from the seemingly safe waterfall and eat and drink and replenish our strength.

We both agree we're exhausted, but Fade decides to take first watch, which i figure, is the most i can give her, privacy to sort things out. I trust Fade wholeheartedly with my life now, and i couldn't dream of killing her, or her killing me. But, i know, that i must come home. There is no other option. And i know i have what it takes. But for now, i drift into a peaceful slumber.

Fade wakes me and i start. she whispers softly, "your turn" and i groggily get up to sit on the watch rock. she finds a comfortable position and i watch her fall straight to sleep, exhausted. Soon, my mind begins to wander, and before i know it, im dozing off again. NO, tell myself. You must stay awake. You're going to win this. and getting killed in your sleep is absolutely not a way to accomplish that. so i shake myself off and decide, that from this moment on, im in survivor mode. and the only way i can keep that up is to pay attention to detail. If someone were to attack from behind that rock...((Cedar observes the water and rocks around him, planning battle strategies))

a while later, i convince myself that ive surveyed every inch of my surroundings.

But i notice something strange. didn't the water used to come up to just behind that boulder there? Now, it's barely 2 feet away from Fade! I jump to a start, realizing what the gamemakers are trying to do. "Fade!" i yell, as she leaps up, dizzily, knife loosely held in her hand, fending off an unseen enemy. "The water! It's rising! We need to get to higher ground!" "Whhhha?" she yawns, clearly not able to see the visible panicked state im in.

The water begins to move faster now. i can see it inch across the rocks. "COME ON! HELP ME PACK UP THE BAGS! WE NEED TO GET OUT OF HERE!" she wipes her eyes. "NOW!!!" Realizing the urgency, she snaps out of her sleepwalking state and begins to hurriedly pack her bag. soon, we're both ready, and we stalk at a brisk pace, away from the creeping waters. "Up there! You see it? that big ledge right by the waterfall!" i look up, and sure enough, over the waterfall where we found our water, is a ledge with an overhang, protected from the spray, a good 30 ft up. there's an easy, staggered path, i soon find, concealed by vines and mist from the waterfall, that leads right to it, and i realize, that this place is perfect, except for one thing. we would be trapped if someone (or something) were to come for us. But, it seems our only option, given that the water is now only 20 ft behind us, and rising swiftly.

"Quick! Climb!" i yell to Fade, hoisting her up to the the third or so foothold to save time. I climb right after her, guiding my hands and feet best i could, trying not to slip on the wet stone. This maneuver is easy for me, ive spent years of fishing on the ugly black Basalt that lines the coastline, but Fade, she's had no such practice, and slips many times, but I'm always there to lend a hand, supporting her until she can grab hold again.

When we get to the overhang/ledge/semi-cave, it's a relelif to be some place dry. Fade wrings her hair out and makes a small pool of water on the floor, while i just do a dog shake until it sticks out in every direction. "Like my new 'do?" i ask girlishly, a perky smile on my face. we both laugh, dry ourselves off, and set up camp.

((Fade))
I feel as if I have just fallen asleep when Cedar wakes me. He's yelling "Fade!!" I leap up, wielding my knife, searching for an enemy. After a second of confusion, Cedar tells me what's going on "The water. It's rising!! We need to get to higher ground!" In my half awake state, all I can say is "Whaaaa?" Then, I put my head back down. Cedar is yelling at me again. This time he says "COME ON! HELP ME PACK THE BAGS! WE NEED TO GET OUTTA HERE! ... NOW!!!" This time, I get up. I start throwing our stuff together, making sure we have anything. Once most of the packs are filled, and the little possessions we have collected, I look at Cedar. At the same time, we start jogging away from the slowly moving water. We come to a cliff and when I turn around, the water is getting closer and closer.
Soon, I spot a waterfall with a ledge next to it, I think that would be high enough to escape the oncoming water. So, I shout ""Up there! You see it? That big ledge right by the waterfall!" Cedar turns his eyes upwards and nods. He walks over toward the cliff face and scans it. I think he sees a path. While I'm still recovering from my awakening and trying to decide how fast the water is going to reach us, which I think will be soon, he starts yelling again.
"Quick! Climb!" I've never really ever climbed before, so he gives me a boost. I start upward, hearing him behind me. I slip so many times, I loose count. The trip is nerve-wracking, but Cedar is always there, bracing me until I can catch hold of the path again.
After what seems like forever, but in reality probably wasn't very long, we reach the 'overhang/ledge/semi-cave.' It's dry and I'm thankful, because I am soaking wet. I start wringing my long black hair out, creating a big puddle. While I'm doing that, Cedar just shakes his hair out like a dog, and I crack up. He says, "Like my new 'do?" girlishly, with s perky smile on my his face. It's relieving to make it away from the rising water. I'm so done being wet!
Once we are dry, we set up our stuff, not knowing how long we are going to stay.
After a couple minutes of silent preparation, I say "The Gamemakers must have done this. What else could have made that happen?" Cedar just says "yes," agreeing with me. So, I continue "That means that the other tributes may be making a show soon. I hope we can take some others out, I really want to go home. Anyways, we should be on our guard. We really haven't had to face anybody else. I've only taken out one..." I know this is painful, killing isn't really my style, but we need to be on the same page.
((Adena, you can continue if you want from here. I guess we are gonna have to wait until Mylan says whats going on, or other people post, to have any action ...))

Once we set up camp, Fade turns and faces me, saying, "The gamemakers must have done this. What else could have made that happen?" I start to drown her out mid-sentance. she doesn't know how terrifying that was for me. My mother died in a flood. She was 8 months pregnant, so they let her stay home to rest. our entire house, with her and my baby brother or sister inside of it, was swept out to sea in the storm. my father, my sister, uncle, and i all made it to higher ground. we had to leave her beheind. the peacekeepers kept us from her. kept me from her. i wanted to kill myself. so, not even knowing what she just said, i reply a slack "yes." to whatever i just responded to. I need some time to think. These games will not get in my way. i will kill every last man, woman and child who gets in the way of me seeing my family alive again. But i shall do so with dignity and honor. March home a Hero. A Victor. I smile at the thought. Then i think of my mother.

message 135: by [deleted user] (new)

((mostly sarcasm. And yeah, people to fight. I don't think you would be able to tell what I meant even if I was talking haha. I'm pretty cryptic and use a terrible mix of puns, sarcasm, irony and bad jokes. But anyways, the point is anybody else who is up on the ledge would be interesting.))

(don't want to give away my age) I really want to be a writer when i grow up. You think this stuff's good enough for like a rough draft or something?))

((Even if Cedar doesn't win, (though i really want him to!) i think i'll continue his story anyways as a victor outside of Roleplay. I like his character.))

message 141: by [deleted user] (new)

((it's really good and to tell you the truth I was thinking about doing the same thing about mine. We have a sweet story going. Cedar is pretty deep it seems, so I think it's great idea and your writing is pretty great! ))

JumpStreet_ | 136 comments The capitol has controlled the minds of several tributes......*Evil cackle*

Kevin from district 2
I race jump from cliff to cliff, barely making each step. The deadly water surrounds me as I hop like a fluffy bunny.
Suddenly, I spot Cedar from far away. I swipe my knife and run towards the tribute, getting ready. I pounce on the figure, it seemed that I startled it!
As I lunge my knife the blade skims the floor, missing the head of the tribute...
