Maggy said all of'em would. Could be a metaphorical thing...but, ya know. All the prophecies/foreshadowing in this book come true in one way or another. Didn't you point out the Red Wedding foreshadowing from Patchface? Also, the stuff Dany sees in the House of the Undying is/will be important as well, methinks.

Razmatus | 130 comments the thing is that always so many die it is harder to determine who survives :D

Yeah, I mentioned Patchface prophecies and stuff. And ugh the House of the Undying killed me honestly. The Rhaegar room and the Red Wedding room get me every time.

Oh I definitely agree that all of the prophecies are important (even like Mirri Maz Duur's at the beginning and then Quaithe and the Green Grace - three mounts must you ride gurrlll). And then all of the Westerosi prophecies are just as interesting as the ones across the sea with Dany. I just love them all tbh.

I didn't much understand them reading it the 1st time around. (I read too fast when I like a book.) But, this last time I've been paying more attention. Lotta foreshadowing I never noticed. lol.

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments If i had known these 2 books were running in tandem I would have waited and read them that way. I think I really would have enjoyed the story a lot more and not been so damned frustrated with George!
Arrrggghhhh! HODOR!

they make sense though even in this order... reading AFFC, you will understand a lot more things appearing in ADWD, and besides, you will discover within AFFC most of reasons why ADWD is called A dance with dragons :)

Yesss and the prophecies and everything could go so many different ways! A really well thought out theory could end up being so wrong just because of how many different paths there are in the story.

I think the prophecies are just some twisted way the author tries to fool us around so we end up being shocked when he unveils the true colours of things :D

Yes, I devoured the first 3 books and thought by far they were the best I had read in a long time then came a Feast for Crows. Well, needless to say I felt so bad about having the book out of the library for so long (because I was not reading it) that I simply sent it back unfinished. I really want to read a Dance with Dragons but know I have to work up checking FFC out again to finish the last 200 pages, uugh. I think I just don't care that much about Sam, Bryann, Cersei etc. There is no Danaerys and no Tyrion....

What about the prophecies that already came true then?

Do you count Bran's dreams as prophecies. His "I dreamt that the sea came to Winterfell..." was prophetic imo. As for actual prophecies there's Patchfaces stuff. He prophecised the Red Wedding just as an example. (And you can't deny there's something ~freaky going on with him/he has powers beyond the range of a normal human/he's not actually human/sob.) Mirri maz Duur's "When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, when the seas go dry and the mountains blow in the wind like leaves..." is prophetic too I think (but does it mean Khal Drogo is making a reappearance and if so what kind???) because all of those things have happened. Just lots of stuff has happened that can be considered "fulfilling prophecies." I understand people being iffy on Azor Ahai stuff, because maybe no one is actually going to take on the role of Azor Ahai and that's just a red herring. As for the other ones though, actual events that were foretold in the story, I don't see how those couldn't be considered prophetic tbh.

Wow sorry this got a little lengthy....

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments I think any prophecy must be considered...although I'm not sure how seriously? I've got my own theories.... and some have already been thrown out the window along with the baby and the bathwater.
Im wondering how much weight to put in Patchfaces rants.
I'd actually love to see Drago's return, but under what circumstances?
And any prophecy can be twisted enough to be considered true.....
Dang it all, it's like a burr under the saddle isn't it?

Razmatus | 130 comments Ada-Lee wrote: "I think any prophecy must be considered...although I'm not sure how seriously? I've got my own theories.... and some have already been thrown out the window along with the baby and the bathwater.

thats why I remembered some of the prophecies but refused to make up any deeper theories - because the author is likely to shatter them all more or less... making up a full theory or something would mean to yield to the author's game and thus be fooled around I think... so I will stay patient and see how it turns out lol

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments I'm with you.... RAZ... Although I just can't resist hoping a few of them will come true as I said above?

Bailey | 57 comments Ada-Lee wrote: "I think any prophecy must be considered...although I'm not sure how seriously? I've got my own theories.... and some have already been thrown out the window along with the baby and the bathwater.

I don't think Drogo's going to return to his body or anything, but idk I can see him helping Dany from his place in the spirit world? Or maybe he'll get Dany out of the danger of whatever khalasar she was surrounded by at the end of ADWD?

I'm not saying the prophecies are set in stone or we need to base all of our theories off of them, but they do shape the story in a way. Because the prophecies that are made to people help shape actions. Melisandre acted so strongly for Azor Ahai because of the prophecies she claimed to be true and what she saw in her fires (which is not foolproof ok it's biiiiased so biased). Prophecies are just something important to take note of, because things prophecised have come true in the story, and I don't think all of those instances can just be written off as an author's way to misguide the readers.

When you take the proverb coined by Cersei literary they'll probably have to.

"If you play the Game of Thrones you win or you die"

When this was meant by GRRM to foreshadow his ending there can only be very few victors and a lot of corpses strewn over two continents...

And sorry of the players still in the field Tommen, Myrcella and Cersey don't seem to be the most likely to win.

Kit Noticed that goodreads has the full summary of Winds of Winter. Is there still no release date? The book is finished? Anyone know of a site or release date. Can't wait for WindsI

Bjoern | 19 comments No it's not finished.

The opera's not over till the fat lady's sung! And GRRM did not even promise something about being very far into Winds till yet... Let alone "being finished" with it.

In this case till the fat man has sung (George) lol.

The goodreads summary sounds great. Hope he does deliver. I don't want to get to book seven and be disappointed.

Shawn Augustyn I'm just over 200 pages into this book and I'm enjoying it a lot so far even with the absence of a few of my favorite characters.

I mean, AFFC and ADWD combined make up for one of the best set-ups I heard of or witnessed - the plots and all, things are about to get nasty... so the way he set up things is brilliant, and we only have to see if the final two books live up to that setup

Alicia Just bought this book today. I have high hopes after the unbelievably awesome way book 3 ended. I was going to take a break and maybe read a few easy books before i plowed into another but I can't wait to see what happens!!!

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments I hope the fat lady has a sore throat for a while! I want to read a lot more.
Where is the summary of Winds of Winter? Never mind. I want to read it I think.

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments Wait a minute.... To go back.... Is Drogo reborn as one of the dragons?
Just a thought,

Razmatus | 130 comments Elizabeth wrote: "That's true. It's kinda hard to believe that a story this big is going to be wrapped up in only two books. I'm prepared to wait after I finish Dance, as long as it's good."

I believe he might - with volumes the size of ADWD or ASOS it might be possible, which would be fine by me :)))

message 79: by Kiki (new) - rated it 1 star

Kiki | 17 comments It took me SO LONG to finish this book!!! I blasted through the first 3. I'm wondering if book 5 is worth the time investment. I was bored to pieces. I'd almost rather just start over and read the first 3 books again...

Gianluca (gianlucag) A Feast for Crows is easily my least favorite book in the series. It's mostly because my favorite characters aren't in it. A bunch of new POV characters are introduced, and it takes a while to get used to them.
The story is indeed slow compared to the other books, but still really good once it picks up the pace.
Reading this right after A Storm of Swords, which is the best and most exciting book in the series (in my opinion), makes it far less enjoyable.

Alexis | 11 comments Yeah, maybe I just read them too close together, but for me A Dance With Dragons and A Feast For Crows both seemed to drag just a bit. I finished AFFC in two days, but I think that's because I was basically skim reading it, I missed Tyrion too much as well as Sansa and Dany. I didn't find it anywhere near as epic as A Storm of Swords.

Prin (prncss1121) | 126 comments I just read this thread. I think ADwD is the best installment in the series so far... :)

:) Precisely why I plan on reading the whole series over again in the next couple of years before he releases the next in the series.

Becky  (nvrayn) | 19 comments Woolfie wrote: "I think it was rather inevitable, seeing as Crows focuses on the 'lesser' characters, which I think is very important, as people tend to have their favourites, and this runs the risk of missing out..."

I always tell people just beginning the series to pay attention to every single person and every single place mentioned in the books. Nothing that GRRM puts out there is unimportant. The more I read and listen to these stories the more I believe this to be true. My re-reads tend to be part research projects.

A good example of this is the scene in Oldtown at the beginning of AFFC. That small bit is full of tidbits that will flesh out what we have read in the past or will soon discover. One thing it taught me is to pay attention to "Dorne"

I know I didn't pay close enough attention to the "details" the first time I read the series. I am currently listening to AFFC on audio. I now have the whole series on audio, it's a great way to do a re-read. If I could just get to the point that in can start my first read of ADWD, I am anxious to get there, but I guess I have plenty of time.

Becky  (nvrayn) | 19 comments Razmatus wrote: "not all chars are supposed to be action rammers lol... sam is pretty clumsy from the outside, but he has a damn clever head, and some of his insights and musings are worth it :)"

I love Sam. I think his story is kind of like the glue that holds some of the other POVs together.

Becky  (nvrayn) | 19 comments Elise wrote: "Guess you may already know of Game of Thrones info sites--Westeros, Winter is Coming, and Tower of the Hand? Westeros is a wealth of info of all sorts, and Tower has background info and book chapte..."

I love these sites. I sometimes think I spend more time reading about the books then I do actually reading them. Some sections of the Tower of the Hand can be set to be spoiler free. I love reading the Essays on that site, but be warned, they are not spoiler free.

I was thinking the same thing... Do the books ever say which twin was born first? I can't imagine a detail like that would have been missed by GRRM, but I can't remember it.

That being said, wouldn't it be perfect justice for Tyrion to get his hands around that pale white throat?

Lannister (lannisteruk) Becky wrote: "Do the books ever say which twin was born first? I can't imagine a detail like that would have been missed by GRRM, but I can't remember it. "

Becky, it's mentioned a few times that Cersei was born first, so Jaime is also a little brother!

Becky  (nvrayn) | 19 comments Seed wrote: "You know better than to skim Martin! Who knows what kinda clues and hits you might've missed!"

So so true!
