Do you think 'The Hunger Games' Movies can live up to The 'Twilight' Saga Franchise? Although I am a little skeptical about how they are going to put a wonderful/futuristic story on the big screen, I don't think HG will beat Twilight's box office numbers BUT I do believe they will come rather close! What do you guys think?

Christie Rich | 335 comments I think they have the potential to keep up or surpass The Twilight Saga. I won't be going because I just can't watch kids killing each other. I loved the first book, but I couldn't progress into the series because of the premise of the story. It just is too disturbing to me. I know I am in the minority here, but I bet they will be good.

MeMe Belikova First lady Ivashkov (alicebelikovreads) | 949 comments Yes, I wonder how they are going to portray the actual killing of the children on the big screen. I am pretty excited to see it hit the big screen though and hope it does good.

Christie Rich | 335 comments I think they will too. I think it's going to be hard for me to not give in and see the films, but for now I am sticking to my guns. lol.

Irene (raenne) I agree with Dinique. Also, I feel like THG is for boys and girls whereas Twilight is a girly movie. I also think more adults will watch this one.

Personally, yes, it definetely beats the Twilight saga (didn't like it lol) :)

Stéphanie (kst3w) | 3 comments I think you can't compare. Twilight is a love story and Hunger Games is a dystopian story. It's completely different.

Tamela (TamelaBuhrke) | 2 comments I think the hunger games will be a much more successful movie series for two reasons:

1. It appeals to male and female audiences. Most guys avoided Twilight like the plague... or were only dragged to it by a girlfriend.

2. Katniss is much more of a hero figure. She doesn't have a lot of control over her life, but she does what needs to be done and works to save/protect others. She's willing to sacrifice herself to save others and stand up for her principles.

That hero journey will appeal to a much wider audience. In Twilight, Bella doesn't have much hero in her. Twilight is much more about a girl trying to get her own romantic needs met. It appealed to those looking for a romance. Twilight was a hit among specific age groups of women, but it just didn't appeal to the broader audiences that I think Hunger Games can reach.

Even though the Hunger Games are much darker in topic, I feel that Katniss is a better role model. She's strong and self-aware. She stands up for what is right and lets her voice be heard. In a harsh world, she stands for hope, dignity and humanity.

Plus, Hunger Games has two romantic partner options, just like Twilight. Throughout the books she learns about love—not just romantic love—but real love. That's something that isn't portrayed in books or movies very often, since romantic love is favored in our culture.

Plus, the writing in these books was gorgeous. I hope the movie is able to capture its voice.

Good points Tamela.

Melissa (melstephensbooks) Ya Katniss is a better role model. Bella was weak and needed Edward to save her all the time. Where as Katniss saves Peeta equally in Hunger Games. I think Hunger Games has a wider age range for the audience too. I was talking to a 60 yr old man who told me he was reading the books haha. I agree about how this series talks about real love. Not lust.

I totally agree. I loved the Hunger Games because of Katniss being a hero and showing that there is hope in all the rubble she is living in. Katniss tries to pick who she really loves, while Bella is looking for a romantic love. Totally different and I believe many more people love the Hunger Games than the Twilight Saga because different age groups and guys have read the book while only woman of a certain age have read The Twilight saga. I have seen guys from my grade at the theater when I went, and they weren't with their girlfriends at all, which just shows how anybody can really read The Hunger Games, like it, and see the meaning to it. So, basically I agree with everything you said.

were not comparing story wise just on the ratings on both movies and if it will be as successful as Twilight.

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) I have a great feeling that Hunger Games can surpass Twilight Saga franchise. I haven't read the Hunger Games, but it makes people curious what is it all about. I'm impressed with the movie. I am looking forward to the next one.

Twilight Saga movies is going to end this year, for sure many will be going to watch that. Breaking Dawn pt.1 is the best so far among the Twilight Saga movies.

Storm (poefinn) | 39 comments the hunger games came pretty close to twilight, cinema wise and dvd sales wise, i have a feeling that catching fire will surpass twilight

Janet McNulty | 11 comments Am I the only one who did not get into Twilight? I got bored with the series after the third movie and couldn't bring myself to read the books.

I like the Hunger Games and read that series. To me it has a better story.

Duks (cnduks_) | 1836 comments Janet, you're not the only one. I tried reading the books, but I just could not get into them... The movies were bland...

Storm (poefinn) | 39 comments i watched the films, the first three, i was sort of a fan at first, then i realized, why?,i lost interest in twilight pretty quickly, i dont want to jugde too harshly, sometimes the films can be rubbish, but the books can be good, im still trying to pick up the first book and buy it, but no avail

Mehak (zrunx_16) | 7 comments twilight was just a fashion statement in my opinnion ... or a major bandwagon that everyone followed it was hyped up soo much that practacally every one has read it but it was NOT that great... i rmr reading all the books just to see what the hype was about and was not too happy with them.. but the hunger games was good =) i loved the realness of the whole pain and loss the characters feal so overall hunger games beat twilight without any competition =) atleast in my opinion... ( not including review on the sad acting in the twilight movies )

message 22: by Gabriel (new)

Gabriel (BooksRunThroughMyVeins) | 15 comments well I'm not really fond of vampire movies and other vampire concepts being used in movies. For my standpoint, vampire concepts are too hackneyed to movies although the plot is a bit different but still it's a vampire concept like the movie Underworld with which vampires and lycans fought with similitude to Twilight that vampires and werewolves(like the lycans) exists. So Hunger Games it is that attracted my attention the most than Twilight.

Richard Sutton (richardsutton) Here's my bit on the genre ( assuming it is a genre...) I think it's like fan fiction -- you know, the stuff rolled out for fans of an existing, unique work by less accomplished writers, to get some exposure. It doesn't require a lot of thought or creative ability just the skill to mimic. I read Dracula, and Anne Rice. Everything else seems to have taken the easy way out, with a great deal of the "hook" already prepared and well-hyped and the plot an over-used old trope. I know readers think its fun, and that's ok, I just wish more publishers would take a chance on really unique, creative writing instead of the "sure thing". It all really bores me, probably because it's all been done before so much better.
