Amanda Corley Touching Spirit Bear is about a boy named Cole Matthews. Cole has anger issues, which ultimately change his life and get him in serious trouble. Cole is the type of character at the beginning of the book, that thinks everything should revolve around him, people should bow down to him and no one is to speak against him, or else. This attitude is what gets Cole locked up after beating and severely injuring Peter. Peter will end up spending time in the hospital and because of the injuries he receives nothing in his life will ever be the same. Cole is just learning that his life is about to change. Instead of going to prison for his attack on Peter, Cole is given the option of the Justice Circle, where he will not be sent to prison, but instead to a remote island in Alaska to live by himself for one year. If he doesn’t change he will go to jail, if he does change can he pick up the pieces of his shattered life and learn from his mistakes? From the moment Cole is introduced in the story, you feel his pain and suffering. We know he has to change, but it will take drastic measures for Cole to face his past and come to terms with how he wants to live in the future. This is a tale of how one young boy’s life gets changed by a group of people who are willing to put their faith in him and give him a chance by inciting their own brand of punishment. Learn to let go of the anger and deal with the mistakes you have made or die trying to escape. Cole’s journey was an amazing journey of forgiveness, tolerance, and trust in others and in ourselves.
