Clive Warner | 10 comments I have edited about a dozen novels now, including some very long works (over 500,000 words).
I do all kinds of editing, but mainly substantive, especially book doctor work. Particular areas of interest are historical, and multi-time-period historicals, SF, action adventure, thriller, and horror. I don't edit romantic fiction.
My rates are very simple: I charge $35 per hour for full hands-on substantive editing, and my editing speed is up to 3,500 words per hour, depending on how much rewriting / new material writing is necessary.
I offer a test edit of 1,000 words free of charge, no strings attached, and will state the time for that edit to allow you to estimate the complete job. What could be fairer than that?
References on request.

Amy Casil (asterling) | 17 comments We are so seriously getting close to our goal of 100 responses ... this is the first of 3 market validation surveys for a new publishing company that's going to turn the field on its head.

Working with an editor was running a close second to beta readers as "most beneficial" to producing timely, quality books

Seriously going for the last group of responses here - indy-published writers welcome!

message 410: by Amy (new)

Amy Casil (asterling) | 17 comments Ha ha ha ha - very proud to get the image in there.

The link to the survey:

It takes 5 minutes. In response to someone's question of yesterday: no, we are not looking to pay salaries but are looking for aspirations/ideas of what writers would LIKE to be paid.

message 432: by Lee-Lee (new)

Lee-Lee Independent fiction editor specializing in line editing and developmental evaluations. New authors warmly welcome.

• Fiction: literary, fantasy, science fiction, horror, supernatural, speculative, young adult, middle grade, new adult, women’s, historical
• RPG and gaming projects, including rule books and guides, supplements, and related fiction

Line editing is my specialty. A good line edit is like private coaching for your writing. When you finish revisions on a line edit back from me, you should feel like a stronger, better equipped writer. You should understand not only what parts of your writing missed the target but why—and how to get them flying straight again.

I also offer a developmental evaluation that examines big-picture aspects of a manuscript such as plot, characterization, dialogue, and pacing. You can choose to have all or part of your manuscript evaluated; some authors like to do the first third or so to get a handle on any big issues before making additional revisions--a great way to get additional editorial support when you're on a tight budget.

If you’re looking for a basic copyedit to sweep through your book and clean up the rough edges, I can handle that for you too—your book, your project, your call.

Prices start at $0.01 per word. Please visit me for more details at lisapoisso.com. Or let's talk! lisa@lisapoisso.com

Not everyone lives forever. Sorry about your editor "dropping off the grid". Hope s/he's still processing oxygen.

As a semi-retired Lead Copy Editor for a publisher, I take on a book or two per month to generate some supplemental income for my social security.

I have an opening available now. The second half of Sept. is booked.

Nicole Frail (nicolefrail17) | 2 comments Hi everyone,

I am a professional fiction and nonfiction editor at an independent publishing house in NYC. I just recently decided to offer freelance editorial services to self-published authors, short story writers, and anyone not under contract with a publishing company yet.

Because I'm new to the scene, my rates are pretty low right now. I offer full and partial manuscript critiques, query letter and proposal critiques, and your general content and copy editing, as well as proofreading.

My rates are on my website, but I'd be happy to give you a quote if you message or email me directly.

I'm running a 15% off promotion until the end of the month, so if you like what you see, book a service now and we can work on it in the near future (doesn't have to be immediate if you're not quite ready).

For more about me, my services, and books I've worked on, please visit NicoleFrail.com.

Thanks!

message 442: by Liz (new)

Liz Black (lizblackx) | 3 comments Hi,

So I have an elaborate question to which there is not really just one answer, but I do need help.

One year ago I started in self-publishing and since then I have published 13 stories. I write erotica and my stories are short, between 3000 and 10000 words. I have used some editing services through Fiverr, but never got a lot of feedback. When I learned I don't edit my books correctly I lost faith and quit writing.

My question now is: where to start? I know there is some value in the books that I have published. I don't want to spend between $500 and $1000 on stories that have so far made me about $20 each, but I am willing to spend money to invest in this business.

I need help with copy-editing, beta reading, marketing my work and with Social Media.

Hoping to hear from you soon!

You might want to join groups such as:

https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

which has a section for Beta Readers who can help with much of the basic editing. You might even find an editor willing to help for free or cheaply.

Another source is :

You have to join and be active in posting before you can submit work for technical review.

Liz, I sense that you and I might share some common issues, though I write longer books. I have four active on Amazon/Kindle at present under my pen name (Marie Eddings), and I'm getting no traction at all.

For whatever this is worth, I've been a technical editor in my real-world persona. If you care to send me one of your stories, I can run through copy editing and make some suggestions.

Hello, Liz,

I'm sorry you had some bad experiences before. I'm glad that you are writing again.

If you are looking for an editor, I would suggest requesting a sample edit from the editors that you are considering. I offer a free sample edit of 2,000 words. My rates are $1.20 to $2.00 per page (250 words = 1 page, per publishing industry standards). I use the sample edit to determine the editing rate and to give authors an example of my work. To learn more about me and my services, please visit my website at www.xterraweb.com.

In respect to marketing and social media, there are many options available to you. The options you choose will depend on the amount of time and money you can invest. Without knowing what you have tried so far, if you have any social media accounts set up, and the amount of time and money you can invest into marketing/promotion, it will be hard for anyone to give you specific advice on this.

If you are looking for beta readers, there are people that will beta read for free or in exchange for you beta reading their books. There are groups here on Goodreads for beta reading that you could check out.

I hope this helps some.

Kelly

Thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely look into your website.

As for Social media, I was quite active on Twitter for a while, but I didn't think it really generated any sales directly or indirectly. I made a Facebook page and didn't do anything with it. (I'm not a big fan of Facebook). I always see people doing grand releases of their books with giveaways and blogtours and cover releases and such and I have no idea how to set up something like that. I would like to generate a buzz or to get more reviews (positive ones :p) but the more I work in this field, the more I feel like all I know how to do is write hot sex scenes and very little outside of that.

I will bite the bullet and try to get a beta reader for my work here on GoodReads. I have done beta reading for others so I know how that works.

Thanks for thinking along with me.
