1. Learn the language. Not just the words, but spelling, punctuation, and everything else.

2. Learn the difference between active and passive sentences.

3. Learn to write yourself. If you want to edit novels, you need to be good at writing fiction yourself. If you want to edit reports, you need to know how to write a cogent well-presented report yourself. And yes, the news media has "rules" for presentation that are designed to make it easy for readers to absorb the information.

This isn't something you can learn in a year. It takes a lot of learning, practice, and feedback. And you never stop learning, even after you're good enough to charge for your time.

That's why someone who's graduated as an English major, still has a lot to learn before they can edit the work of others.

D.M. Wozniak The Gardener of Nahi

Hello.... I am nearing completion of my second novel, and I'm wondering if there are any editorial services out there for synopsis creation and query letter creation. I'm not looking for editing services of the work itself; rather, an editor who can read the work, and create sample a sample synopsis and query letter which I can use during the agent submission process.

My upcoming novel is called The Perihelion, the genre is Speculative Fiction, and it's written from multiple POVs, which will add some complexity to the synopsis. For more information, visit www.dmwozniak.com.

Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 280 comments I just saw a post (elsewhere) from some "editor" who's promising the moon. Just sign up with me and I'll get you published and turn you into a best-selling author.

If s/he can do that, why the heck is s/he working as an editor instead of becoming a best-selling author and making some real money?

As is usual in the writing game, there are sharks out there who prey on the "wanna be"s. They take their money, then move on to the next sucker.

Let's get this straight: only YOU can create a best-selling book! A "story" (content) editor can help you by re-arranging scenes and perhaps improving them. A copy editor can punch up sentences and fix grammar problems. But if YOUR story doesn't resonate with the buying public, all you'll have is the best version of a "non starter" or a mid-list book that you can create.

Yes, you need those extra pairs of eyes. But don't be fooled into thinking that editors have a magic wand that can turn everything into gold. We don't have that power.

message 368: by Al "Tank" (new)

Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 280 comments So quick to take offense and fly off the handle.

What makes you think I was writing about you? Guilty conscience? I see nothing in your posts that come close to fitting the problem I was pointing out.

The individual I referred to posted in a different thread, not this one. His post was full of grand promises that no editor can make happen (at least not outside the fantasy world), not you, not me, not anyone.

So be careful about slinging assertions around. Yes, we can point out problems. Yes we can correct grammar and such. But NONE of us can guarantee a best seller just because we waved our magic wand over a manuscript.

If you'd seen that post, I would hope you would have pointed out the shortcomings in it as well instead of attacking the messenger. When someone scams authors like that, all honest editors suffer from the bad publicity.

Now, go back to your corner and reevaluate your attack plan.

message 369: by Katie-bree (new)

Katie-bree | 7 comments Hi Everyone! If you want your writing polished to perfection then you’ve come to the right place. My name is Katie-bree and I’m a freelance Editor. I’m here to ensure that your work is published in a way that portrays your author’s voice while reading as smoothly as possible. In other words, I dot your i’s and cross your t’s so that you can focus on what you do best … writing a fantastic story! My services include the following:

Critique Evaluations - this is where I read through your story highlighting any potential problem areas and assessing the overall readability. It is similar to a beta-read only more in depth. Generally I attempt to send you updates throughout the read-through and an overall report at the end, however I can alter the correspondence in virtually any way that suits you.

Developmental Editing – This is performed while your work is still young. Here, I will collaborate with you to ensure your manuscript develops with the intention, voice and style that you seek to obtain. I make suggestions on readability, character development, content, use of dialogue and sensory description, narrative voice, pacing, and language. I will work with you answering any queries and brainstorming whenever you require it. I do not correct grammar or spelling at this stage as it is too early in the process to do so correctly.

Structural Editing/Copy Editing – A Structural Edit is similar to a Developmental Edit only it is performed when you have a manuscript already near completion. I focus on refining your writing, re-ordering and restructuring in order to tighten the story and improve readability, clarity and accuracy. I alert you to any inconsistencies regarding plot, character development and speech. I assist you with your language usage and in creating believable dialogue and plotline. Copy Editing is basically line editing and it corrects grammar, punctuation, spelling, word usage, etc. I will suggest alternative words or sentences if I believe they will work towards your purposes better. Generally I do both of the above edits together, if you are happy with this arrangement and time permits, as the two often go hand in hand and, quite frankly, I can’t ignore a spelling mistake if I see one. Obviously though, if you only want one or the other completed I can do this for you too.

Proofreading – I do offer proofreading services as well which is basically a final run through of your manuscript at its completion to ensure there are no obvious errors and that the mark ups from editing have been applied. I do not like to proofread something that I have just edited however as I am usually too close to the work to perform the proofread correctly.

My work is usually marked up on Track Changes so that I can leave comments/feedback throughout your story and I can guarantee that I will work with you all the way, answering any questions you may have. Please keep in mind though that I make the suggestions; it is ultimately your work and you will always have the final say. Before we commence with any edit I will ask for you to provide me with a sample of 10-20 pages from the middle of your manuscript depending on the length of your work. I will edit this and then return it to you so that you may see my results. If you’re satisfied I will give you a quote and then we can schedule a date. You will receive from me a letter of agreement and an invoice for half the payment with the other half paid at completion. Unlike some other services I prefer to stay in touch with you throughout the edit and collaborate with you fully. Prices do vary on the amount of work to be performed and the edit type chosen however range from 0.002-0.005c per word. *If after consulting your sample I believe the work will require more than the given price ranges suggest then I will notify you. Although I can focus on one area separately, I also offer fantastic discounts for package deals, which I’m happy to quote for you. So, what are you waiting for? If you want to arrange an edit or you have any further questions please email me at deathsdownindixie@gmail.com. I look forward to talking to you soon. And remember, don’t let a simple spelling mistake stand in the way of you being published!!

Al, Thank you for pointing out the problem with the anonymous editor who promised too much.

message 371: by Al "Tank" (new)

Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 280 comments Amanda, I'm afraid that you can't prosecute anyone for offering "the moon" until they fail to deliver. That means that a "victim" will have to carry that particular ball. The particular individual is symptomatic of some who promise more than they can possibly deliver and in doing so, make all editors suspect -- you and me included.

I'm not out to get a particular person, but rather to educate authors so they don't get scammed. Nor was I "fishing" for customers (I'm busy right now).

I've not attacked you, and your visceral un-Christian hatred for me seems out of place. I pray you find peace and a desire to read more carefully before you have a knee-jerk reaction to destroy someone else's career.

Best wishes in your career.

My pleasure. Most editors are well-intentioned and some are downright "super talents". If you're an author, I hope you work with one of the "super" types. If an editor, I wish you success and happy clients.

I'm an author, and for the most part I can slog through my own editing once I've set the work aside for a while -- plus I don't have a budget for such.

But as you've mentioned, there are those who promise the moon and stars to those who hope to catch a break. Unfortunately it's a case of the overly hopeful getting gulled, much like authors getting spammed with the adverts for "Get Traditionally Published -- Packages Starting As Low As $999".

I do most of my own first-aid (like setting my nose after it was broken), ad hoc carpentry, car repairs, masonry work, forge work (swords and knives), and the list goes on.

I won't do my own dental work.

message 376: by Al "Tank" (new)

Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 280 comments Self-editing is hard, but possible if you have an eye for minute detail (I'm talking copy editing). Being on a budget of almost nothing is a bummer, but you'll not spend more than your eventual sales (as some do).

You seem to be going about it the right way. Setting it aside and forgetting it for a month or so is a great way to clear your mind enough to approach the work dispassionately when you get back.

If you have a friend or two who will volunteer to go over it for errors, that can help too (depending upon the grammar skills of the friends). And they may discover some logical problems that you missed.

The best way I know to do this on a budget is to join a peer-to-peer writer's workshop (there may be a small dues fee, but it shouldn't be much). You end up editing each others' stuff. You'll be surprised how much you can learn from working other people's manuscripts.

Next best cheap fix is to trade editing with one or two other writers you trust.

My father taught me I'd better know how to do everything I possibly could myself as I'd likely never get rich, and he was right.

I'm slowly getting my hammer hand back in shape (after a sagittal band tear), but once Wife and I are out in the country I'll be setting up another forge along with a small anvil. I prefer bronze, but steel is okay.

R.F.G. Cameron | 443 comments Al wrote: "Sounds like you're ready for just about anything up to a complete breakdown of society.

Actually, I normally don't write about the complete breakdown of society, at least not ours as it is currently. Breakdowns in future settings, due to war and so forth, I have a bit of that.

I do have one novel sort of along those breakdown lines I need to finish, once I get a few other things done.

I tend to feel that the bodice-ripping/dystopian/utopian/apocalyptic/zombie/vampire/werewolf/perfect kid/perfect adult/why-am-I-misunderstood themes have been a bit overworked.

message 381: by R.F.G. (new)

R.F.G. Cameron | 443 comments Charles wrote: "You left out the vampires fighting over the underage girl."

Since there are enough people who don't comprehend the concept of Age of Consent or how it varies by jurisdiction, I didn't feel like opening that particular can of annelids. Underage is relative to context, i.e.: era, culture, position in society, and so forth.

message 382: by Charles (new)

Charles Hash Yeah I deleted it after I thought about it, and you did say vampires and bodice ripping so I felt it was ultimately redundant.

Sorry, but cans of worms are my specialty. :D

It's all good, as I open a few of those canned annelids myself. Though I think it is laughable how many people confuse things like Legal Age of Majority with Legal Age of Culpability and Legal Age of Consent regardless of era, culture, and so on.

Since I didn't specify vampires and nubile teenaged females, it wasn't so redundundundant as all that. I also forgot to mention cannibals, ghouls, pole-dancers, and ballerinas. How about a bodice-ripping pole-dancing were-leopard living in utopian post-apocalyptic suburbia with the perfect family.

Back to editing.

Like you, I'm sick to death of even seeing the covers on these things and never liked them in the first place. I suspect their time is about over and we make way for the next fad (whatever that might be). Al,

I don't ever expect to fall into money from my writing. If you want to see what I write (gratis for e-copy) or if you prefer low-cost paper back message me and I'll send you a direct link.

I've read Verne, E.E. "Doc" Smith, Norton, Zenna Henderson, Alistair MacLean, and a host of other older authors, so my style would fit more with theirs.

As for fads, I've got too much going on to even attempt to follow them -- guess I got old when I wasn't looking.

message 386: by Al "Tank" (new)

Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 280 comments Trying to follow a fad means just that: you FOLLOW. By the time you get there, the world may have moved on.

Write what stirs your passions and you'll produce a much better work. Then, when the fads get around to your little corner of the world, you'll have the perfect product to offer them.

I'd love to see an eCopy of something you wrote. You can get in touch with me here: https://alkalarediting.wordpress.com/... The site itself is under construction, but the contact form works and saves us the spam you get when you post your email address in clear.

RFG,

You probably have a lot more experience than me, but it's going to be a long time, if ever, before I put out anything without hiring an editor first.

I truly thought that I was wasting my money when I sent the 4th draft of my debut novel to an editor. I was completely sure she'd change a couple of words around but otherwise just tell me how awesome the book was.

A year and half and a complete rewrite later, I'm almost back to that point. No way I'm taking the chance that I'm just as delusional as I was the last time.

Brian,

I started my first scribblings back in the 1970s, got more serious about them in the mid-1990s, and then in 2005 wrote my first two novels (in two and three weeks respectively) on weekends or once I was home from work. Someone else edited both novels, I went through and made the advised revisions, went through them both again before publishing, and still had a few different readers point things out.

I can't say I have more experience than you, or that my work is any better, but I visualize my work before I start, let the characters tell me their stories, then I write their words. I do a rough draft, then after I've set it aside for a while I'll go through chasing bugs and critters.

The novel I'm editing now is longer than the first two combined, took longer to write, and an author who has won awards said it looked to be fairly well-written, especially for a somewhat rough draft.

Is my work awesome? No. Will my work win awards? Other than a Silver Rodent for five or fewer minor typos or errors, the answer is probably not. Will I ever write a best-seller? Again the answer is probably no.

Can I write a decent tale that keeps people reading to the end? Yes. Do I enjoy the work? Yes. Am I delusional? My answer is who isn't delusional in their own way. Then again, it takes a bit of delusion and chutzpah to write something, send it out into the world, and think others will enjoy reading it. Sometimes that mix of delusion and chutzpah works out, sometimes it doesn't.

Apart from that, my budget is zero at present, unless you know an editor willing to take dirty diapers in exchange. Or I could cook, but I doubt any editor would want to eat the meal after it was shipped and on the road a few days. Each of us has to deal with the context we're set in.

Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 280 comments How to Keep Your Editing Costs Down

Editors charge in two ways: a flat per-word published rate and a rate estimated on the time it will take to work your manuscript.

The per-word folks generally keep their rate high enough to handle messy assignments. If your manuscript is a disaster, you may as well shop for a "per-word" editor (who is hopefully good enough to handle your problems).

But if you want to hoard your financial resources, you can shop for a "time-driven" editor. But first:

Clean up your manuscript to the best of your ability. This includes:
-Check the flow of the story. Does it start out "running" or is there a big info-dump you have to fix? Does it keep moving and not bog down? Are there any logical inconsistencies? And so on.
-Look for hackneyed phraseology and fix it. Tom Swifties? Weak sentence structure? Passive verbs? Weak action verbs?
-the normal grammar and punctuation problems. The best way to handle this is to lay your ms aside for a month or two, then go back to make a "grammar pass".
-Anything else you can do to polish your manuscript.

THEN pitch the editor(s) and get a quote.

I'll be back, in a week or so, with more definitive ideas that should help you produce the best story you can.

On average however the services cost;

Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 280 comments How to Write a Salable Book or Novel: http://alkalarediting.wordpress.com/h...

This is a 14-part "how to" for developing authors. The articles are short, so you can get through them in much less than an hour. But instead, take your time and absorb the information.

If you want to keep your editing costs down, you need to do as much as you can to produce a clean manuscript. This will help.

The site is loaded with other articles that will help you to improve your writing. Just read down the right column and click on articles that interest you.
