BTW, Alexa, you have a typo in your posting. You have trad rather than trade.

Alexa - PS: I actually meant to write "trad", as in "traditionally published" ;)

That's exactly the kind of supercilious over corrective attitude I'm talking about.

`Editors' waste too much time on details and not on the pure IMPACT of the writing. `Oh my goodness you need a comma there. A period here'. That may have little to do with the POWER of the writing. How it affects the reader.

When asked - What is the most powerful literary device? Author Stephen King said - `THE ONE WORD SENTENCE'. And that is a relatively new device.

Editors and Writers need to throw off the chains of an archaic writing system and focus on what works.

For you pearl clutchers out there, I'm NOT saying eliminate all punctuation - just don't be afraid to play with words, sentences and punctuation to get the impact you need. The old staid rules of Eng. Lit. are changing. We need to be aware of that.

Gail Meath (goodreadscomgail_meath) Sorry Diana, old-school here and not a best-seller, so for what it's worth. As others' here said, famous, TRAD published authors can overstep the traditional boundaries and still lose readers without batting an eye. Stephen King for sure.

As indie authors, we need to focus on grabbing and holding every readers' interest in the story, plot and characters. The use of any rebellious effort to try something new, i.e. bad grammar or silly punctuation, is bound to irk readers and cause them to assume you didn't have an editor or you aren't knowledgeable enough or you are just simply lazy, which will result in lost lost readers or even worse, bad reviews. Just my opinion.

That's why The Chicago Manual of Style is on its 17th edition: to keep up with the "archaic writing system" and "old staid rules of Eng. Lit." that change every few years.

Just as you said, don't be afraid to play with words, sentences, and punctuation...but that impact you're looking for is mostly done through words and sentence structure. Bad grammar and punctuation, as others have said, will cost you readers and earn you bad reviews.

Of course, when we give you back your edited manuscript, you can accept or decline the changes at your discretion. But know that we're trying to paint you as the professional that you are, with your material that is properly understood and enjoyed. :)

My editing services are designed to build on author skills, as much as manuscript quality. Positive feedback from clients (both established and new authors).

Sue McKerns | 23 comments Beta & Proofreading Bookings (Science Fiction & Fantasy: Space Opera, Paranormal, PNR, Omegaverse, Urban Fantasy, Vampires, YA & more) free samples

I see you have started the dreaded hunt for a paid beta reader for your manuscript. I know you are looking at other betas and trying to find the right fit for you and your story, and that’s what I’ll be helping you do in this post.

Since you are here your story falls within the genres I love to read, but I’d like to make a couple of clarifications on genres. I just can’t do Chucky dolls. It’s a childhood phobia that follows me into my nightmares. On the other hand, Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End didn’t mar my early years one bit. I will read YA/NA if the story otherwise falls within my genres. 500 words of a teenaged girl’s daydream of being a swashbuckling space pirate surrounded by 70K words of high school drama – I’m not the beta reader you are looking for.

Am I really a beta reader? That is unfortunately a relevant question. I have heard that manuscript pirates are putting up Goodreads profiles and websites. I have a Goodreads profile and a website you can check (see my link below), but more importantly, I have reviews (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...) from Goodreads authors you can contact. I will also do a meet and greet with you by phone or Zoom. Fair warning – I’m a Zoom newbie, but I promise to wear clothes. Email me to schedule an appointment or to just chat email-style, whichever you prefer. suemckerns@gmail.com.

Check the link in the above paragraph for my current availability.

What can you expect when I beta your manuscript? I will read your manuscript word for word, leaving behind polite, insightful, and sometimes lightly humorous inline comments covering anything and everything that I’m thinking. Then I write a beta report. I go into the details of what’s in my report on my website. For now, know that in this report I will tell you the hard truths you need to know. I tell you the things I don’t really want to tell you, but I do tell you because your story will be better for it. I know that this is an uncomfortable part of your journey. The following comments from authors who have experienced my work describe my personal and respectful approach better than I ever could.

What is my turnaround time like? Since my primary goal is to give you excellent feedback, I don’t rush reads or expedite for an additional fee. I do schedule more time than I need to cover life’s unscheduled interruptions, so I can often start/finish beta reads earlier than projected. Generally, I will schedule 15-17 days for a 100K word manuscript.

About the free samples . . .? For new clients, send me the first 3K words of your novel and I'll beta them for free.

For more details, visit my website: https://sites.google.com/view/ottervi...

I look forward to beta reading your manuscript and providing the assistance you need to effectively tell your story.

I also offer proofreading packages.

Sue

Ray Noble (ray_noble) | 7 comments Gail wrote: "Agreed, Paul. It's lazy."

My approach to any editing, or review for that matter, is that if they misunderstand something I have written, then it is likely other readers will also. On the other hand, it is best then to check with other readers rather than slavishly agreeing with an editor. Good editors will put a lot of work in, I imagine; so it is polite to take heed of their advice. But I don't mind if an author chooses to write bad grammar if they do so to good effect. Most of the editing I experience is for articles in journals, and they are often correcting to fit the particular style of the journal. However, lazy writing that simply leans on a good editing process isn't good. I have probably jumped into this thread without considering the context. I do apologise. The only other thing I will say is that the comments have intrigued me about the author mentioned. Perhaps a bit of bad writing can at least make us discuss the work, where a lot of good writing is ignored and...there lies the problem.

The services of a professional copy editor can greatly enhance the technical quality of any work. The key word being professional. Always perform due diligence and research to verify the background and qualifications of a potential candidate's services. Merely claiming to be a professional copy editor does not make one either a copy editor or professional.

Lynda Dietz | 354 comments Francisco wrote: "Does anyone have experience translating a book into English? I am a native Spanish speaking author. I am using a translator tool, Spanish to English, making corrections, using a tool similar to gra..."

A professional copyeditor can help to smooth your translation so that phrasing, idioms, and general grammar styles don't sound unnatural in their structure. If you're on Facebook, there is a group called Ask A Book Editor, and it has a sister group (AABE - Help Wanted) where you can ask specifically about Spanish/English translation editors. There's also a group called EAE Ad Space where you can inquire re editing services.

The tools you're using will get you pretty far, but then a copyeditor can take you over the finish line.

Gail Meath (goodreadscomgail_meath) Thank you, Lynda! I have a book, a story based upon a true Spanish heroine, that I was thinking about translating into Spanish. I used available editing tools, but would love to see if an editor could fine-tune it. I do worry about the cost, though. I have read translators charge around $2K. I'll look into the FB group:)

You're very welcome! The cost for any editing service varies from person to person, but it's always helpful if you state your budget ahead of time. Many editors are willing to work with payments, and there's an editor for every budget.

Alex Vogel (alex_vogel) | 1 comments I'm looking for a professional editor (/recommendations) to work specifically on the blurb for the print edition of my novel (literary/LGBT). Preferably a British editor, as the book is written in British English.

The book is already published as an ebook, and fully edited. The editor I did work with previously was great for the novel itself, but not the kind of support that I need to write a smashing blurb. Before I publish the printed edition I want the blurb to be as good as it can possibly be.

I'm looking to work with someone who has experience with editing/writing blurbs and a portfolio on their website.

Please PM me directly and include your website.
I'm only interested in working with a professional.

I'm a beta reader for Science Fiction & Fantasy, but I may or may not be the right beta reader for your story. You should check me out (start w/ my GR profile) - AND check out other beta readers. But what should you look for? Here's a short list:

1. Experience & Depth of Knowledge in your genre (& sub-genres/crossover elements). Check their GR profiles & bookshelves & ask questions about books they have read.

2. Testimonials. Make sure they have them. If they have any on GR you can verify them through the author's profile link.

3. Website. If they are serious about what they do, they will have a website, Fiverr gig, etc. w/ detailed information about their beta reading services.

4. Ease of Communication. Do they respond fully to your questions in a timely manner?

5. Scheduling, Services & Fees. Each beta reader is unique and you will need to compare their availability, range of services & rates to your own needs.

Don't wait until the last minute. The beta you want may not be immediately available.

I've completed Sophie Playle's developmental editing courses (Liminal Pages), and have completed some of Jennifer Lawler's Club Ed courses. So, I know not only fiction theory, but also how to put it in practice.

I provide free samples of up to 2000 words. I'm also available to start editing your story right away. As well as developmental editing, I also provide manuscript critiques. As I'm fairly new, my rates are on the cheaper side. So, this could be ideal for those on a tighter budget.

Some of my favourite genres are: historical fiction, contemporary, romance, mystery/crime, thriller, fantasy, paranormal. I work with adult, young adult and new adult books.

Courtney | 2 comments Hi! My name is Courtney Umphress, and I’m now accepting new clients for the fall. A little about me: I hold a BA in English, and I’ve worked as a copy editor for ten years, editing 150+ books. I produce thorough, quality work within strict deadlines, and while I’ve worked in a variety of genres, I specialize in fantasy and romance. Finding the right editor can be daunting, so I provide a free sample to new clients to determine if we will be a good fit for each other.

You can find more information about my services, rates, and portfolio on my website: www.courtneyumphress.com.

Becca Hello, fantasy and romance writers! I have openings for new clients as we head into 2023, and would love to work with you. I’m a professional editor with experience in beta reading, developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and proofreading. Whatever stage you’re at in your work, I’d love to help you move forward. My favorite genres to work with are fantasy and romance (bonus points for queer/diverse characters!) but I’m open to working with many different genres.

Check out my project offerings and reviews on Upwork. Then send me a direct message on Upwork to get started.

Or, you can email me at rebeccajoykragt@gmail.com if you prefer setting up the project through paypal rather than Upwork.

Looking forward to working with you!

Sara Sykora | 4 comments If you need a proofreader for your upcoming book, I would love to help you out.

I have been beta reading for several years, but I really enjoy the proofreading side of things so much more.

I take pride in my job and it carries over into my proofreading. My job is to make you look good.

I am pretty resonable compared to others because I do this for enjoyment and to read genres I wouldn’t usually read.

Please message me if interested or reach out via email at sykoraproofreading@gmail.com.

I also have a new website that lists my pricing as well: www.sykoraproofreading.com.

Thank you.
