Stacy Juba | 39 comments Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share about an upcoming self-editing class that writers might find of interest.

I am a freelance developmental editor and creator of the affordable online course Book Editing Blueprint: A Step-by-Step Plan to Making Your Novels Publishable. (coming in fall 2019)

By going through this online writing class on how to edit a book, you’ll get the tools to skyrocket your manuscript to the next level without breaking the bank.

This course demystifies the editing process, giving you a practical, step-by-step blueprint for evaluating, rewriting, and polishing your manuscript. It’s a proven system that outlines what every fiction author should do before approaching an editor. That way when you’re ready to hire a professional book editor, you’ll get much more value for your money and should receive a high level edit rather than one filled with general beginner advice.

I also offer content editing and line editing for one price. You can select the hard copy option or the Word file option.

If you would like to learn more about me, visit my website and sign up for the free class Line Editing Made Simple - 5 Days to More Polished Pages. You can also join my private Shortcuts for Writers Facebook group where you can download the free toolkit 7 Simple Steps to Nailing Your Book Blurb.

Kelly Hartigan (xterraweb) | 31 comments Hello, everyone. I offer an affordable, professional editing service. One of my goals when editing is to enhance and polish your manuscript while maintaining your voice and style.

If you'd like to request a free sample edit and/or have questions about me and my editing services, please visit my website at xterraweb.com, contact me via email at editor@xterraweb.com, or message me on XterraWeb's Facebook Page or Goodreads.

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) If you're an #author or #blogger currently in need of #editing services I currently have room for clients! Please feel free to contact me at nightshade44637@gmail.com if you have any questions or would like to make an inquiry about my services.
Amanda M. Lyons Editing Services:
I am a very helpful editor and like to give you all the info you need to improve your manuscript. When I edit I look for proper grammar usage, solid plotting, engaging storytelling and areas where the author could use cutting to improve the flow. I don't have a specific preference on genre or whether or not the work is fiction or nonfiction, but I do reserve the right to reject a project if I feel that I would not be the right editor for the work (conflict of interest or projects I find offensive due to topics like sexual abuse of minors utilized in a sexually titillating manner or technical books with which I have little experience for example). I prefer to look at a few pages of the work first, and then make an agreement with the author on how we'd like to proceed.
Pricing:
Standard Manuscript Editing:
1-150 page manuscripts are $2 a page
151-400 page manuscripts are $1 a page (to help authors better afford fair editing even with larger manuscripts)
I may be open to negotiation on price, especially for some projects with greater length. Feel free to ask me about larger projects such as blog or novel series edits. Please submit Microsoft Word manuscripts in 12 point Times New Roman. If we are in agreement about all other aspects of the project, we’ll discuss pricing and the length of time that will be needed and/or which you prefer for completion. I prefer to receive half of the agreed-upon fee at the beginning of the assignment and the other half on completion, but if you prefer to pay in full on agreement that is fine. I take payment for my work via Paypal.

David Kummer | 115 comments In search of an affordable editor! I will post a description of my book below. I feel like I've done almost everything I can for it, and I really want to take it to that next level. Right now it's okay, about what the rest of my work has been, but I think a great editor will really push me over the top and stretch my limitations.

I'm in no rush and willing to pay, but like I said I need affordable, because I'm a college kid.

I also do writer coaching, which saves a lot of time for the business author starting out.

If the book manuscript is in my skill-set, I give a test edit on 2,000 words. While my rates are average in Australia, elsewhere they may seem exorbitant!

Karlie Good tidings,

I am currently editing for several satisfied customers as well as writing my own fiction. Call me a glutton, but I enjoy the editing process.

I aim to provide an affordable and quality service. I am currently working my way into full-time self-employment in my home office and so have a flexible schedule to take on new authors. I know the sword and sorcery genre tend to encourage long word counts, and I am open to allowing for partial payments via PayPal invoicing to break up the cost of hiring an editor for a long novel.

My current rate is from $0.003 to $0.004 per word (depending on the extent of editing required), which adds up to $30-$40 per 10,000 words. This rate will only hold until my schedule fills. I provide a free sample of 2,000 words to make sure that we will be a good fit and to evaluate the level of editing which will be necessary.

I have edited everything from 180,000 word epic fantasy to 3,000 word erotic short stories and personally read anything from Jane Austin to Aleron Kong. All genres and tropes are welcome.

Direct message me with any inquiries.

Thank you, and happy writing,
Karlie

BookWhispers | 52 comments This might be rather unconventional. You may have noticed me already in various Goodreads groups where I share my blog posts about writing: http://mybookwhisperer.org/

I am not just writing about writing. I am very happy to help other authors with their works as well.

And now we can help a small toddler, Teo, together.

The boy I am talking about was born with a rare bone condition due to which the doctors advise amputating his legs.
https://www.facebook.com/pourqueteoma...
However, there is hope. Teo can undergo saving surgery in America. And, surprise, surprise, it costs a fortune. That is why I decided to offer my beta reading services and send Teo half of the earned money.

What you can expect from my feedback:

I will carefully read your story and send you very detailed feedback.

I will focus on:

- the characters (are they likable, enjoyable, did you manage your goal to make them disgusting...)

- the story (pacing, great moments, twists, dead ends, plot holes, dragging parts...)

- the world-building (is your world believable? Is it detailed enough, or should you reduce it?)

-the style (repetitions, too long sentences, beautifully written parts...)

Do message me if you are interested.

Jim Vuksic | 1227 comments Most public libraries feature entire sections dedicated exclusively to providing information and resources for aspiring writers. They include books and articles in periodicals that provide names, biographies, and contact information of copy editors, conceptual editors, layout design artists, graphic design artists, and publishers who have established reputations and have attained consistent commercial success within the literary field.

There are seminars, classes, and lectures available at little or no cost through community colleges, book clubs, and public libraries presented by those who have proven track records within their specific area of expertise.

A willingness to dedicate the necessary time, effort, and energy in research can provide a writer with limited resources substantial benefits.

The odds against a novice author attaining commercial success within this extremely competitive field are great. That said, some have. There is no reason why you might not become one of them. With very few exceptions, nothing worthwhile is attained easily. I wish you success.

Paul F. | 55 comments This is just a general comment to advise would-be authors: I have a couple of key pet peeves when I read a novel or review a book for Readers' Favorite Reviews. First, I hate it when an author tries too hard to convey a southern drawl or an ethnic accent, as in, e.g. "Way-ell, wah don' yeew see-it a spell an' ray-est, hun-nuh" or "Ees eet yoo-er weesh, seen-yor, thet we geev all thee maw-ney to thee nawns?" Second, authors who just weren't thinking when they were writing, as in, "Up on the ridge I saw a lot more Confederates in that camp below than we thought there'd be," Sergeant Cooper said while taking a drink from his canteen. Does anyone not see what the problem is here?

Alexa Kei (alexa_kei) | 10 comments Hello!

My name is Alexandra. I've been working as a technical editor since 2016. Never really liking the technical aspect, I am finally stepping over to the fiction side of the industry after preparing and learning for two years.

I've also been reviewing books since 2017, both trad and indie. You wouldn't believe how many books I had to turn down because of poor editing. Don't let typos and grammatical problems ruin your novel's potential. Get an editor! Doesn't have to be me, just get any professional you like to fix your manuscript before you go into print. This is VERY important! No one will finish your book if even the first page is simply unreadable (and there are examples like that, believe me, I've seen it).

If you need a sharp eye for your fiction novel, you can find more information here along with a submission form.

Please use the site for all communication.

message 693: by Steven (new)

Steven Tyler (steventyler) | 11 comments Hello All:

What an appropriate posting by Alexa.

I finished a book yesterday by one of the writers on Goodreads who was seeking reviews for his new book and I like to assist my fellow authors in their endeavors, so I gave it a go.

It was with regret that I emailed the author and advised him that it was in his best interest that I not post a review as the text was riddled with mistakes and I mean riddled!

There were commas which should have been periods; periods where commas would be correct, two partial sentences, words with vowels missing, different font sizes, and a factual mistake.

Rather than being embarrassed by an effort that would receive a failing grade in high school, his response was that he has an 81% five star and 19% four star rating on Amazon.

Okay, so I did a little digging. These ratings are based on seven reviews. One of the reviewers named "Seraphia" has 1,314 reviews on Amazon with three on 02/06/21, two on 02/09/21, two on 02/13/21, and four on 02/22/21.

I counted that she has submitted 43 five star and 7 four star out of her last 50 reviews. A snarky type would have written, and I quote from his website, to this "An award winning writer" how much he paid for Seraphia's five star review, but I'm not the snarky type.

The author also said, "you may want to carefully read novels published by major authors and publishing houses. On average, they contain 2-4 typos and factual errors per book."

Okay, so does that mean you should not be embarrassed by the mistakes in your book?

I'd like to hear from all of you on your opinion on fake reviews and self-denial by authors.

BTW, Alexa, you have a typo in your posting. You have trad rather than trade.

A writer.

Diana Drakulich | 62 comments Re Editing and Proofreading - anyone here read Cormac McCarthy? All the Pretty Horses - No Country for Old Men - The Road - made into movies.

McCarthy won the Am Fiction Book Award. He often DOES NOT USE PERIODS, COMMAS OR CAPITALS. He often uses 1,2 or 3 word sentences.

We Indies need to catch up to the times.

This was probably the most interesting post I've ever read on Goodreads xD

PS: I actually meant to write "trad", as in "traditionally published" ;)

I think if you are famous you can get away with breaking the ‘rules’ and doing something weird/crazy/innovative. But as unknowns or new authors you need to certainly ensure no typos and probably follow basic rules of grammar!

Steven Tyler (steventyler) | 11 comments I agree with Jane about new authors following the rules.

I've seen established writers deviate from the norms but for a newbie this may come off as incompetence. I read a James Elroy novel that did not follow standard story telling methods, didn't like the style, and decided that I wouldn't read another of his books.

You know the old saying, "So little time, so many books."

Jane Shand (janeshand) | 66 comments Yes, I am not sure I would enjoy a story without commas or full stops! I saw a short story once written all in dialect-almost impossible to read.

I don't care if McCarthy is the best writer since William Shakespeare; if he doesn't use proper grammar that makes reading easier and more familiar, he is not worthy of any awards and he needs to learn how to write properly before he writes anything else.

Gail Meath (goodreadscomgail_meath) Agreed, Paul. It's lazy.
