Nonfiction copy editing, proofreading, and indexingNonfiction writers, let me help you perfect your manuscript for submission. Copy editing services include fixing errors in spelling, grammar, word usage, and punctuation; identifying overused words and phrases and areas that need clarity; fact-checking; ensuring consistency of style, both internally and against your style guide of choice; and correcting faulty construction (parallel structure, verb tense changes, pronoun agreement, etc.).
Proofreading is the final step before publication, after copy editing and layout. It’s your last chance to catch typos, missed words, and wonky formatting before your work appears in print!
Copy editing and proofreading rates are the same: $.006 per word. I charge by the project size, not by an hourly rate.

SM Reine
New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author
I've been using Harris Hill Book Services for a little over a year, and in that time, they have proofed several of my novels and have corrected hundreds of errors. It's definitely good to know that I can depend on them to find the mistakes that my eyes simply can't see. I would recommend them without reservation.
Kyle West

Working with Jennifer was great. Easy, affordable rates, and most importantly, her edits were fantastic. After a previous proofreader found 50 errors, Jennifer found another 400! I'm so glad I had her take a final sweep of my manuscript.

I just finished working with Jenn and it was a fantastic experience. Jenn is patient (one would need to be to work with me) and she really knows her stuff. If you're looking for a top-notch editor that's fun to work with and affordable, you can't do better than Jenn.
JM Panettiere

I had two projects that I knew would need editing with a quick turnaround, but I didn't know when the material was going to come in. I needed an editor who could handle flexibility and work on short notice, and Jennifer really came through. She was responsive, and professional, and when the two projects came through at different times, she wasn't thrown at all. And the results were excellent. I can recommend Jennifer without hesitation.
Mark Parragh
Author
I've had the pleasure of working with Jenn on each of my novels. Jenn provides high quality edits, prompt service, and rapid turnaround, taking the time to ensure that I have a full explanation of any identified changes and the reasoning behind them. I look forward to working with her in the future.

When I first talked to Jenn about looking at my manuscript I was nervous. I didn't want her to give me a horrible review. When I received back her detailed critique, I was very grateful I had asked for her help. She showed me where I hadn't developed my characters enough, where my story line was weak and dragging. And talking with her and reviewing her critique gave me so many new ideas I could use to strengthen my story and characters. I was excited to work on my manuscript again.
MK Meeks

I have worked with Jenn for over 10 years and she has a tremendous work ethic. She is very easy to get along with, strives for perfection, and is very proactive.
TJ Houghton
I have known Jennifer for three years and have worked with her on several projects. I have found her to be honest, dependable, and professional in her approach to everything she does, all while being a pleasure to work with. I have also gotten to know Jennifer personally and have found her to be very kind, considerate, and pleasant.

Hi! :)Are you looking for an editor? Whether you're looking for someone to edit your stories, your website, or your promo materials, I want to help you.
I work in multiple areas but specialize in fiction for any genre. I enjoy pulling a story apart and finding ways to make it better. More than that, I love the opportunity to help writers and artists share their creations with the world.
Stories thrill, excite and even educate us. A great story is a magical experience that leaves an impression on the heart and mind and keeps readers coming back to their favourite authors for more. Your dream is to share your stories with the world; my dream is to help your stories be the best they can be, so you can reach more people and make a bigger impact. (And maybe help you become a commercial success along the way too.)
I’m happy to follow CMOS, other style guides, or your own style preferences. I work fast and can do express work, if needed. I offer discounts on multiple rounds of editing.
For large projects or subjects of a special nature, I work with a female co-editor and can partner with others if need be.
I know how tight the writing community is and how we all like to help each other out. And I want to support authors because I know how much of a financial struggle things can be sometimes. Know someone else who needs an editor? Refer a project, and when that project is completed, you’ll earn a gift card from Amazon.

Hello! I am a beta reader with some openings in my schedule for the end of March and April. I have over twenty years' experience as a writer and teacher, and I'd love to help you make your manuscript the best that it can be. Please visit my website for a description of my services, rates, and testimonials: http://www.theamymartin.com/manuscrip...Amy
I'm a book blogger and I've recently started providing copy editing and proofreading services. I am a newbie but I have a Keen eye for spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. I do not claim to be an experienced professional and hence my rates are pretty low. This is also why I am only offering copy editing and proofreading services as of now. I'd be glad to hear from any authors who require these services.
I am a fully qualified freelance editor.I offer the complete range of editorial services to indie authors, from structural editing to proofreading, and all at competitive prices.
To find out more, visit me at my website/blog, where you'll also find editing tips in the form of blog posts, vlogs, and interviews with publishers, editors, and authors.
I am an editor who works closely with my clients, sending them regular updates and queries, because I believe editing is a collaborative process. This is your manuscript, not mine. All I am here to do is help make your work shine, be it a full-length novel, a short story, or a letter to the editor.I offer copy and line editing, and proofreading. But my work covers considerably more than simply making sure your prose's grammar is fine and your writing is typo-free. If, say, you are writing a detective novel, and he/she is a likable sleuth, I am going to offer you suggestions as to plot and/or character detail that will help ensure your readers cheer on your heroes. No editing software ever made can offer writers that kind of encouragement, because technology is impersonal, and I always bring a personal touch to my editing work, because I love my work and want to see my clients succeed.
I work on the following genres:
Mystery (hard boiled detective, amateur sleuth, or police procedural-no courtroom drama or stories about corrupt cops getting away with breaking the law, please)
Historical (no preference at present)
Western (name says it all)
Action-adventure (ditto)
Fantasy (nothing too dark and brooding, please)
Literary (ditto)
Sci-fi (nothing dark and Orwellian, please).
Romance (serious only, especially romantic suspense)
I also edit blog posts, articles, letters, dissertations, etc.
If you are curious, drop me a line and let's see how I can help you improve your manuscript.

"Working with Tony Held helped me to significantly improve my book, add needed scenes/chapters and remove unnecessary elements. You shouldn’t do it all alone. As a self-published author I know. You can't reach your goals and turn that manuscript into magic without the right team behind you. Let my expertise as an editor, best-selling author, business owner, and self-publisher help polish your work. Whether it is finding the right combination for your first draft or perfecting your last, I can help. I have over ten years' experience in the industry and can offer editing, coaching, beta or alpha reading, writing coaching and more.
I love reading and editing paranormal/urban fiction, coming of age stories, mystery, dystopian, romances, sci-fi, and fantasy in general for young, new, and adults. I also enjoy pet stories/guides, travel memoirs, unique personal memoirs, feminist literature and stories, psychology, and fiction stories geared at middle grade readers. I do not read or edit horror or erotica (but some of my team members do).
I keep my rates low and work within your budget because I know the struggles an author faces and what it takes to get from your spirit to the final product. You make enough sacrifices for your craft. Don't punish your wallet.
I have recently partnered with a few very talented Beta Readers and have a promotion where myself and one other reader will offer a joint Beta read of your manuscript up to 90,000 words for $120 USD.
Jesse reads erotica and horror, and loves world building stories, fiction, crime dramas, and also reads non-fiction. She does not read religious themed texts or stories.

You want your book to be perfect - Shadowcat Editing wants to help! My superpower is catching ridiculously tiny typos like backward apostrophes and straight quotes where curly quotes should be, as well as redundant phrasing, mismatched verb tenses, and errant formatting. Let's talk about how we can team up to make your manuscript as polished as possible before you publish!

Hi folks,If you are wondering about your manuscript, want to polish it up or need a fresh pair of eyes on the story then I'd be happy to give it my attention. I'm happy to read anything up to 30,000 words for the moment, though I may up the word count later.
I will read through the manuscript, take notes as I go along and pass on these notes to you as well as an overall summary of the work. You can expect a week turn around once I have begun the process.
I'm offering my assistance because I want to see if editing and reviewing is for me. In return for my assistance I would like a reference / review of the service, and permission to use the reference, in case I decide to get more serious about this kind of work.
It would be easier for me to do in-text note taking if I received the manuscript in a word doc, so I will say right now in case it's on anyone's mind - I definitely don't want to steal your book. I have enough ideas on my own, write extensively and don't suffer from writer's block, so hitching a ride on your creative coattails isn't for me :)
Get in touch if I can help and we can discuss further any particular issues you may want addressed.

Cearúil

Editors,Dialect / Slang - How much is too much?
I'm working on a horror novel based in New Orleans and besides the regional dialect (Creole), I have a character with a speech impediment.
What is the best novel you've read with heavy dialect/slang and what is an example where it was too much?

Hi D.S.
This is a really complicated question. It's difficult to answer without an assessment of the manuscript, but I'll do my best.
If it fits characterization, is readable, and fits the story, then it's the right amount of slang and dialect. You may want to provide a terms glossary for people if it gets complex to assist a reader who wouldn't be familiar with the language/slang.
I can't recall any titles specifically where it didn't work, but the instances I have seen in my work that don't work are when the text is straining to use it, it is difficult to navigate for readers, and it didn't add anything to the characterization or plot.
I hope that helps!
Good luck in your writing.
Catherine
I find slang and dialect distracting and very difficult to write. I am an editor and beta reader and I rarely see regional dialect that fits and flows. Very difficult to write but a worthy goal!Sharon

Hi there,I'm looking for an editor for a short story I've written (roughly 6500 words). It's a horror short, set in 1970s East Texas, revolving around a teenager who is "in the wrong place, at the wrong time".
I'd like someone who is a horror fan, someone with a good eye to catch my grammar mistakes, and someone who will call me out when a paragraph doesn't work, or a story beat falls flat, etc.
I have other books I've written/am working on, that will need to be edited one day, so this is also me looking for a potential editorial relationship for future projects. No obligation, of course.
I don't have a fixed rate in mind (I figure we'd discuss that), but I was imagining somewhere in the ballpark of $0.01/word, especially for this particular short story.
PM me, if you're interested.
