Neal Simmons | 11 comments How do you feel that Royce, Hadrian, and Arista compare to other fantasy/scifi mainstreams like Garion, Sparhawk, Richard, Paul, Rand, Vin, etc.

From my readings, Arista would compare most closely to Polgara, but she does not have nearly the power or even noble bearing. She could also come close to Kahlan as they are roughly the same age.

Royce feels like Silk with a very dark side.

Hadrian is kind of a cross between Sparhawk and the pewterarm from Mistborn.

I'm interested to hear what others think on this. For myself...When I was writing this series I had read very little fantasy (mostly just Tolkien and C.S. Lewis) I'm reading more of it now...and to be honest don't see too much similarities between characters, but I think that is a good thing as each author should develop characters that are uniquely their own.

Riki (grifter730) | 9 comments I don't think Hadrian or Royce are similar to any fantasy characters that I can think of. There are plenty of capable warriors and thieves/assassins, but the camaraderie of Royce and Hadrian, and their individual personalities are too well fleshed-out to be able to make arbitrary comparisons. Same goes for Arista, for that matter.

Kristjan (booktroll) They are dead ringers for these guys :-)

@Krisjan - I hear that often, and since I've never read Lieber I can't say one way or the other. I know someone else recently mentioned that the only real similarities between Fafhrd and Grey Mouser was the professions and basic body types. So there is both agreement and disagreement on that point.

Neal Simmons | 11 comments It really all depends on what you have read and when you read it in relation to other books.

Polgara is such a powerful character that any powerful, strong-willed female character I run into is almost immediately compared to her unless there is some major difference. Thus, the comparison to Arista

That makes a lot of sense Neal - context always is a factor in such things.

Elise (ghostgurl) | 56 comments I can't really compare these characters to any characters from any book I read. Not even the secondary characters. Sure Royce and Hadrian might have some elements of thief types, but not their specific personalities. If I happen to come across some Royce/Hadrian dopplegangers I'll let you know :)

Mattie | 24 comments I have to agree with most everyone here: Royce and Hadrian have a relationship that is like no other. Sure, some elements may be similar to other duos, but they really have their own kind of partnership. However, I believe Arista sort of resembles Elizabeth from Pirates of the Caribbean; they were both living in luxury and then totally changed and started becoming more tough. They both even started taking part in battles. :)That's just my opinion though.

Interesting...Many times similarites are purely coincidental I thought of and wrote Arista long before Pirates but I like seeing people finding connections to others.

Annie | 4 comments what books silk from?

message 13: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I liked Silk. He was fun. Lighter than Royce, though.

message 14: by Neal (new)

Neal Simmons | 11 comments Agreed, Royce is MUCH darker. Of course, Silk was raised as royalty where Royce was raised as trash.

Mattie | 24 comments Is this Pawn of Prophecy any good??

I liked it & the rest of the Belgariad. The Mallorean wasn't quite as good, it's another 5 books of pretty much the same thing, nor did I care for the 3 other books, (Belgarath, Polgara, & the Codex). I loved Eddings' Elenium trilogy which is the first of two. Again, the second one was pretty much just more of the same, so didn't tickle me as much.

message 17: by Neal (new)

Neal Simmons | 11 comments The two prequels were probably the better two books of the series to me. They give the backstory and show just how hard those two worked to obtain the right endings.

I usually just think of the Belgariad and Mallorean as one larger series. Really, the only thing separating them was the roughly ten years between the two. Most of the major characters are the same, but the world view is massively expanded in the second one.

The Elenium and Tamuli are both really good. Flute is my favorite Eddings character, and she grows much more in the second trilogy.

I just wonder if Royce's daughter is going to turn out like Ce'Nedra or Danae. Either way, he would probably go crazy very quickly.

Just finished Swords and Deviltry which contains 3 short stories about Fafhrd and the Gray mouser and wouldn't call them dead ringers for Hadrian and Royce. The tone of the book is also extremely different. Planning on picking up the next two books next week so will see if anything new develops to change my mind.

Interesting...I hear the comparison so often that I wonder what people are seeing. Is it just a matter of physical descriptions and banter? I don't know - but one day I will find out for myself.

message 20: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 34 comments I think it is, Michael. I'm one that said that initially, as there is a resemblance. But as we get to know the characters more, it's not a clear comparison anymore....

Thanks for the additional information Chris - one day I'll see for myself - but hopefully not too soon, as that means no more Royce and Hadrian ;-(

message 22: by Gandalfgrijs (new)

Gandalfgrijs | 2 comments Strange enough, I read the plague dogs (Richard Adams) at the moment and I can't stop comparing Snitter and Rowf with Royce and Hadrian.
I know it's a bit stupid, just because Snitter and Rowf are dogs and Royce and Hadrian aren't (well, that'll be a huge surprise).
Snitter is similar to Royce, according to me, or maybe more to Duster. He is crazy, but serious.
Hadrian is idealistic and somehow traumatized, and so is Rowf. Only Hadrian is tired of killing and Rowf of water, little difference.

I've never read Plague Dogs - But I'm a huge fan of Watership Down. I'll definitely give it a try.

message 24: by Dale (new)

Dale Parrott (dparrott) | 1 comments Old thread, and this comparison has nothing to do with scifi/fantasy, but my immediate thought just based of the friendship and banter is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

message 25: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) | 347 comments Mod
@Dale - Butch and Sundance were definitely an inspiration. One of my favorite movies to it's age.

message 26: by Alison (new)

Alison | 1 comments New to the group. Really enjoyed the first three volumes. But fear I do not fully understand Nimbus, the white feather and his involvement as a more important character. Seems vital at the end of the third volume..if I am to fully understand the series. Would someone explain in a few words please. Thanks
