Perhaps Tithe? I've never read it but it sounds like it would match your description.http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/46...
What made it Fantasy/sci-fi ish? And what did the girl do? Was it something to do with her schoo? Family? Friends? Something going on generally in the world?
It might've been the Faerie Path, I'm not sure. Definitely not Wicked Lovely. Also, it might not have been "faerie" it could have been "fairy."
Well it was fantasy sci-fi ish because, well, she was a fairy. More general, I guess?
I haven't actually read the book - it was a book that I found at a bookstore that I didn't buy and now I want to find.
You're not thinking of Artemis Fowl by any chance? Main character's a boy, but the name might have thrown you off.

How to Ditch Your Fairy comes to mind.Do you remember approximately what year you saw it in the bookstore?
It was more YA, and it wasn't like realistic fic or anything. It was like a pretty, elegant sort of cover. I'm not sure what color...pastel, though.
I was going to suggest, like the person above, that it might have been something from O.R. Melling's Chronicles of Faerie series.( O.R. Melling ) There are four books, and the first ones were published in two different editions, the second quite revised and expanded, and with very different covers from the earlier versions, so depending which one you saw, you might not recognize it now from the cover alone. The first three are set in modern Ireland and the fourth in Canada; the heroes are all modern girls who get involved with the hidden world of Irish faerie.

Oh, it's not chicklit. Sorry misread there. Perhaps
?There is a 'YA Faerie' list. Maybe you can find something there if you haven't looked already. Usually it's not successful but it might be worth a try.
Maggie L. Wood has a series that start with The Princess Pawn which is now called Captured and the second book The Princess Mage which is now called The Darkening
Maybe something by Charles Delint? He writes both YA and adult fantasy. The Blue Girl
Little (Grrl) Lost

it's not
Wings but Aprilynne Pike. it's a pastel themed cover and the girl finds out she's actually Fae/Fairy.

While we wait for Natalie to reply, I have another suggestion. Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston?
I think her name was Melissa Marr, and she did one about a girl, who met the fae king. His mother was Winter Queen or something like that. He had to marry, though he loved another, to defeat his mother. I remember she had to grab a branch and not be killed to prove she was new queen. Can't remember the name.
Also, Anya Bast I think had a series surrounding fae that centered around a girl.

It was a YA fantasy/sci-fi book that was published probably in the last 20 years, um...not sure of the author. It wasn't like a comedy-chicklit type of thing.
Set modern-day, (no medieval) and the main character was a girl.
Sorry, I'm not much help.
