i finished the book and got confused is abdul gay or what happened there?

His friend was killed because he was gay and the part when he said this rock was perfect for them to sit on together,with his head on his chest te kinda made me think he was gay .(what straight guy would do that?!)
i know but it just bugged me because its not really that clear but it seems like it is and yeah i dont know anyone who'd do that.
