I don't get HBO but just got the DVD for the first season...I may HAVE to get HBO for awhile and I haven't gotten past the part where they show the characters at the beginning of the disk.
Kiersten wrote: "Anyone else super excited for season 2!!! I am."yes - do you know the date for the start of season 2 - last time i looked at the HBO site i didn't see one. I also just got season 1 on dvd from amazon - it was only 29;99 - better then the price i saw at Costco this weekend

I read the first one and half of the second one and kind of bogged down on keeping track of all the names. I loved the first one but it's pretty complex.
Loved season 1! I was.pretty unhappy with the great characters getting killed, but what a fabulous season ender. Ive been ready for season 2 to start since it ended!
Well, I just watched the first episode of season 2 and I have to say it was absolutely amazing... shocking too and more than just a little bit disturbing, but I still enjoyed it very much. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the season.
Just finished it here. And update on my reading, I finished the second book and started the third. I stopped reading book #2 in July 11 and picked it back up in Feb. I decided to just not try to keep track of names other than the main characters and then I could not put it down. I'm glad I read them before watching it.
I love this series! haven't read the books though, and not sure I will. For those who have (or are) read them, is the series a huge departure from the books?
I had heard the series followed the books really closely and it does. But the books are not as graphic (sex and of course describing nudity is not like seeing it). You get more of the feelings of the characters from any book to movie from the book I think. I am glad I read the book first as I do think you would have to miss some implications watching the show without the books first.
I like the show well enough. I watched the first season last year, and thought, "hmm, maybe I will take a look at the books."Well, I struggled through the first. It is of epic proportions in length; they all are. And while, yeah, I did enjoy it in some respects, I don't know if I will continue reading the series. My patience doesn't tolerate epic proportions of book lengths, unless it is SUPER. And it... wasn't.
The second season just started for me, and I am enjoying it.
Game of thrones is a brilliant tv series. My thanks to the author who wrote the book, that made the tv series possible.
I don't usually care for adaptations - they usually get changed until they aren't recognizable. But I am enjoying Game of Thrones. Now I've read books 1-3, it was a slow start but they definitely got better.
I watched the last episode and I really, really hate Geoffry. Hate him! I still haven't gotten around to reading the books, but I have never wanted a character dead so badly. Love, love, love Lord Tyrion, The Imp. One of the funniest characters ever. IMO
I agree about Geoffry. that kid is the most twisted piece of work I've ever seen. I love the Imp too! He's hysterical. And there's some goodness in there, something his siblings don't have. What a weird family!
I also love Khaleesi (sp?) and her dragons. There's something about her character that is subtly strong (though not so subtle any more) and compelling.
Dale wrote: "I also love Khaleesi (sp?) and her dragons. There's something about her character that is subtly strong..."Agreed. I hope she eventually gets the Iron Throne. She'd be a good ruler, I think.

I think she will. The Starks aren't really interested. the Lanisters are finished, the Baratheons are in trouble with the whole spirit thing, and that only leaves her.
Any chance of resurrecting this thread? Love the book and the series! I'm looking forward to Season 3.
I feel bad for not having read the books, and I will have to rectify that. This series has sucked me in, and I am like a kid waiting for Christmas. So excited for this Sunday! If you have HBO on Demand, you can see recaps, and the actors discuss their characters and the new season. It's worth a watch. I heard this is the Empire Strikes Back storyline in this series.

I have re-watched the last season episodes and am so ready for the prime time on Sunday.
I love, love this series. I'm about halfway through book 3 and can't wait for the new season tonight. Arya, Daneyrs (sp?) and Jamie are my favorite characters!
Cynthia wrote: "I love, love this series. I'm about halfway through book 3 and can't wait for the new season tonight. Arya, Daneyrs (sp?) and Jamie are my favorite characters!"I have to agree. I love those characters too. Though I have to admit to a crush on John Snow. His hair is very touchable. ;)
So excited for tonight and to have a group with whom I can discuss it!
I've been economizing since my recent lay off and HBO was causality. Why did I just break down an hour ago and re-subscribe because the new season of Game Of Thrones is starting? Well once it finished I'm canceling it again until True Blood starts. I hate HBO movies but their series are so addictive. Luckily I hate Girls and Boardwalk Empire (since they made Margaret kind of of trampy and ungrateful).
Cynthia wrote: "I wish HBO would let you just but a season of the shows you want."Agreed. HBOGo.com should be HBO on Demand rather than only for HBO subscribers.

That would be great. Pretty much the only shows I make an effort to watch are Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and the Borgias, in that order - all of which are HBO (or Sky Atlantic in the UK which is where I live). Apart from those, it's barely worth me having a TV, so it would be amazing if I could just pay and legally download them.
I try not to start a tv series, I wait until the season is out on dvd (Walking Dead, True Blood, etc.) but couldn't do that this season with Game of Thrones. Now I suffer all week for that 1 hour and it is so frustrating not having the next episode ready to play! The last episode ended with the King Slayer getting his hand chopped off - the cliff hanger is just cruel :) I think it is easier to wait a year, and be able to watch the season back to back, than to wait a week between episodes.(I have the books and am waiting for season 3 to finish on HBO then I'll read books 4 and 5.)
I agree! I find myself wishing the week away so I can watch the episode. That's so not good, especially when I'm turning 40 this year. I need to hold onto this time as much as possible! :PI am admiring how the screenwriters are showing us the parallel story lines of the characters. That is a lot detail to cover in an hour.
J.T. wrote: "That is a lot detail to cover in an hour."Agreed. I wish it was a bit longer. I honestly wouldn't mind if it were two hours per episode. LOL!
I'm concerned with what will happen after Season 5. GRRM is a great writer, but he takes his time. I think it was something like 7 years between books 4 and 5. Unless he's grinding away at a record pace, there may be a big Sopranos-like hiatus between Seasons 5 and 6.

My co-worker was just explaining to me that he takes a long time to write books and she was worried about the same thing.
Anyone else feel as if their heart was ripped out by Sunday's episode? Worried—yet looking forward to—next Sunday's season finale.
J.T. wrote: "Anyone else feel as if their heart was ripped out by Sunday's episode? Worried—yet looking forward to—next Sunday's season finale."I know that was so epic? I laid there staring at my TV a good 5 minutes in disbelief of what just happened. It makes me want to read the books but I'm trying to stay spoiler free.
Found this interview with Martin on why he wrote The Red Wedding. http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/06/02/gam...
