Darry and Ponyboy's relationship

I read The Outsiders in 8th grade and I felt that the whole time(except the end) that Darry was a jerk to Ponyboy. Do you feel the same way?

He had his reasons. Ponyboy was acting stupidly. Darry reacted accordingly.
agreed:) how did you like most about the book. me it was ponyboy and Johnny in the church reading gone with the wind.
I honestly didn't really like the book that much, but my favorite part would probably be when Ponyboy read Johnny's note.
ya agreeded. was forced to read it in my english class.
I think think the bump heads with each other like most brothers. But Darry loved him and had his best interest at heart.

Amy: Movie is SO much better than book! You will like it! The guy that is the main character in the old Karate Kid is Johnny! AMAZING! The only part I didn't like was when Ponyboy dyed his hair blonde. it looks AWFUL in the movie. Word of advice. :D

Darry had the weight of the world thrown on him at age 19 (20?). Suddenly he was responsible for his two younger brothers and realized he needed to get it together work wise (money) and maturity wise. He started acting like a father rather than a brother because he felt he needed to. I don't think that goes so well in a sibling relationship. I remember Ponyboy saying something like Darry used to be fun. As leader of his household he had to keep his brothers out of trouble and as leader of the gang he wanted to keep them out of trouble, too. I always felt bad for both of them.

He was doing the best he could to take care of two younger brothers when he was only what? 20? That was stressful enough. Ponyboy only added to that stress by being so...void of common sense lol. So sometimes he was a bit harsh, but he was only trying to be a good guardian and keep Pony out of trouble. Also, the death of his parents really hardened him.

I've read this book a few times at different points in my life. The older you get the more you understand Darry and where he's coming from. Since their parents died he wants more than anything to keep what's left of his family together because he's already lost so much. He's lost his parents, he lost the chance to go to college (to work to support them all so Ponyboy can at least finish highschool) Of the three of them he had to grow up the quickest. He was barely old enough to keep them all together in a neigborhood that was pretty rough and one small mistake would mean foster care for the other two. It's something no one his age should ever have to do. So when he was always yelling at Ponyboy it was more out of fear of losing even more, of not knowing if he was raising the other two right as well as dealing with his own grief of losing their parents and a normal life.

I love it's still part of the curriculum and seeing the reactions of people reading it for the first time (and seeing the movie for the first time, those guys were the biggest babes of our time :D)

When you consider what Darry was going on at the time that this took place, you can kind of understand why he was not in the best place emotionally to deal with Ponyboy and his messing around. Not only that, but he was trying to take care of his family and make sure that he was able to keep them in the same house as him. I think that Ponyboy was acting his age, a young teenager, and wasn't thinking about anything other than himself.

I also read it in Year 8 and watched the movie, both are faves of mine. I can't read or watch without crying, "Stay Gold" will bring me to tears every time.
As for the actors being "babes', WOW, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Tom Cruise, C. Thomas Howell as Pony Boy, what a cast!
Did you know that S E Hinton has a cameo role as a nurse?
To answer the original question, Darry showed Pony Boy "tough love", he was so scared of losing his remaining family that he came down hard. maybe he should have lightened up a little, but then Pony Boy did do some pretty stupid things.

She felt so much pressure after the outsiders that she doesn't write much anymore, but there was a more recent novel which I of course can't think of the title of right now :P flah old brain haha

I think Darry had his reasons for being so mad at Ponyboy sometimes, I mean, he had to support both Ponyboy and Soda after their parents died.
Hi Kimberly, had a few tears when Patrick Swayze died, as a teen I had a poster of him on my bedroom wall, it was pulled out of "Smash Hits" magazine, lol.The novel she wrote as an adult is called "Hawkes Harbour". It's a bit strange, I liked it but didn't like the ending, I have seen a few people say that they don't like it at all.
lol about the mullets, I had several pairs of fluro socks and I also had a fluro green t shirt - I swear it nearly glowed int he dark!

This has always been one of my favorite books. I think I will read again now that I am an adult.
darry is trhe older sibling watching out for his siblings for them to not do stupid mistakes i would know because i am the eldest child of four and we are all of the same gender but i aint telling that personal information LOL i like darry and they have no parents so darryl is tough on ponyboy because he wants him to live the dream he had for himself and darry is stuck keeping the family up
Darry's and Ponyboy's relationship is a typical brotherly relationship. If Darry wasn't the way he is, the brothers would split up, go into foster homes, and probably never see each other again. But, sometimes i did think that Darry was a little too harsh. Like when he hit Ponyboy for NO reason at all!

I don't think Darry was a jerk at all. Think of the huge responsibility he had placed on his shoulders at his young age. He did the best he could.
Darry was a child trying to raise his baby brother. Of course he did not do so perfectly. Older, more experienced parents screw up too, but Darry loved his brother, and he wanted to protect him, when he was not even ready for such a responsibility so yea, sometimes he did so in way's that seemed harsh, but what other knowledge and choice did he have?
