New Year's Eve: Where Will YOU Be? (09:Moonpies, sweeter and texting speed) (10:Mafia rules)
It's too early to think about New Year's Eve. I don't even have any of my Xmas presents yet... Why are you putting all this fucking pressure on me, RA?? I can't take it!! One holiday at a time, godammit!! Did I mention I haven't put up my motherfucking tree yet?? Now you want me to think about New Year's Eve?? What about Valentine's Day?? Do you want me to tell you what I'm (not) doing for Valentine's Day?? What about Arbor Day?? That, too?? Shit. Easter... Flag Day... Administrative Assistants Day?? It's too much......!! Get off my fucking back already!!
I actually agree with David ... somewhat. And only on this. New Years is one of my least favorite holidays because of all the damn pressure to have a fantastical wonderful better than last year by far time every year.
New Year's 2000 was pretty fantastical, and I've never even tried to beat it.
It gets so overwhelming that I end up just staying home and deep conditioning my hair and drinking bourbon alone.

I doubt we'll make it up there this year though. I don't know what we'll do instead, but I'm sure we'll find something.

The only holiday I really get into is Mardi Gras.
(David, I am sorta surprised that you do Christmas stuff. Wow.)

Ah, but I thought I'd ask you just the same.
What are you doing New Year's,
New Year's Eve?
Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight,
When it's exactly twelve o'clock that night...
Welcoming in the New Year--
New Year's Eve.
Maybe I'm crazy to suppose
I'd ever be the one you chose
Out of a thousand invitations
You received!
Ah, but in case I stand one little chance.
Here comes the jackpot question in advance:
What are you doing New Year's

Last year was interesting... some people were party hopping and left before midnight. Some people were party hopping and arrived after midnight. Some people were party hopping and were drunk before they even got to my house (they had a limo for the night). This year we're inviting a different group of people so I don't think there will be any party hopping.

But it got me thinking about doing my own brunchy-type activity.
We'll see if I actually manage to do anything other than sleep in...
This will come as no surprise to those of you who wish I would sometimes just shut my pollyanna mouth, but I love New Years. It started to get tarnished by an association with my ex-boyfriend, who I accidentally slept with the last two New Years. Now that he's a family man and not likely to make me start my year in a way that says, "I'm doomed! This year is going to be just like every year! Way to start it out, you stupid idiot," I'm free to enjoy it fully, again.
Some of my friends and I go to The Gresham Inn, which is the biggest dive ever. One year, said ex-boyfriend and I decided not to do anything for New Years, but then decided about 20 minutes to midnight to run to the closest bar. It was one street over. We walked in and it was FILLED with bikers and their hos partying down!!! One unforgettable moment was when a lady who was dancing with her rotund companion wrapped her legs around his waist and laid her head on his shoulder for a slow dance! We've never gone anywhere else, since.
It's completely seedy and they always have a crappy band and a really scary (and free) buffet, that I do not eat from. They give out hats and noisemakers and champagne before midnight. The reason we love it is because everyone there is having a great time! There are absolutely no pretenses.
Then I text everybody I know with "Happy New Years! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!" which once prompted my lesbian friend of 28 years to wonder if I, too, was a lesbian, until I showed her how many people I sent that to.

I'll be expecting my New Year's greeting this year, Montambeau.
You got it. I might mix it up a little.

I love that you're a Pollyanna. I feel that way around here a lot, too.
I'm not a fan of the apostrophe in New Year's Eve. maybe I'm just not so much into apostrophes in general. I know its technically correct and all, the eve being possessed by the New Year in this case. But it just looks so ... eager.

It was so much fun we stayed for quite awhile afterwards, and then we just had to stroll back to our party for a warm up nip.
We stayed up til about 4AM, and then went out for breakfast at some diner.
It was all down hill from there! Nah just joking, I think what made it great was that I never put too much into New Year's, don't really care. At least the past few years I manage to stay up past midnight!
And for the past 4 years, I've been alone with all my animals, Richard and Jake go somewhere meeting up with family. I've loved it.
Sarah, send me your number on pm.
Lori, do you have pictures of that night?
I love 4am diner breakfast!!!

Next year come to Portland, Mandy!

(I dropped acid once, but that doesn't count)
How is it possible that you've never been drunk on NY Eve? Not even in high school or college? What did you do on New Years in college? My brain in thunking on this one.

Fireworks on NY Eve actually makes sense, TP. I wouldn't mind that. Those people who jump in the lake the next day, not so much.
Well, as of this morning, I've taken a vow of prohibition, so maybe I'll be sober on NY Eve for the first time since 92.

But then, most of my New Year's have been extremely dull, involving TV, a couch, and snack foods.
I'm going to party like a rock star, mostly likely, RA. I will probably drink even though it sounds HORRIBLE right now! I will stick to beer, though, as it doesn't fuck me up royally like wine does, apparently, starting this Fall.
We might be going to go see Big Head Todd and the Monsters for New Years. My sister won two tickets on the radio this week, and sweeter has a friend at KBCO who might be able to get us a third. :)

I think I'm staying home. I considered hitting the symphony but tonight's low is seven degrees, and my dog is sick, so screw all that. I may get properly drunk tonight so I can cross "drunk on NY eve" off my list. My wife and kids are in Florida, so I can get as drunk and know I can properly recover tomorrow.
If I start to drunk post tonight someone please take away my computer. Thank you. Be safe tonight, everyone, and have fun...

take care & happy new year to y'all!

Is everybody going to be drunk posting tonight?
This could be very amusing... :)

I wish there was good Chinese food somewhere in this town. Somehow Chinese food seems like the perfect kind of food for New Year's Eve. Don't know why.
I'm going to Denver. But I might be able to do some d.p.ing when I get home. I installed this gmail add on that makes you do math before emails will send or blogs will post in preparation.

In preparation for what, Sallers?
New Year's Eve!
That is not really true, however. (should be on the lying thred) I often just tack statements like that on the end of sentences because I think it sounds good. I thought it was kind of a clever thing. Gmail kind of freaks me out sometimes. That's true.

Portland has lots of good Chinese.
Portland also has really good steakhouses, I recall. What is the deal with that? Lots of cowboys and cattlemen?
My wife and kids are almost always visiting my wife's mom, far away, so I usually have the night to myself. I hang out with friends earlier but rarely make the midnight deadline or whatever. I'm usually reading quietly by 9PM. Anyway, this year the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra is doing "Ode to Joy" on NY Eve...I might check that out. Seems like a fitting way to end the year and start the new one.
And...you?
