RandomAnthony | 14536 comments What are you doing on NY Eve? What do you normally do on NY Eve? Pros and cons of NY Eve?

My wife and kids are almost always visiting my wife's mom, far away, so I usually have the night to myself. I hang out with friends earlier but rarely make the midnight deadline or whatever. I'm usually reading quietly by 9PM. Anyway, this year the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra is doing "Ode to Joy" on NY Eve...I might check that out. Seems like a fitting way to end the year and start the new one.

And...you?

It's too early to think about New Year's Eve. I don't even have any of my Xmas presents yet... Why are you putting all this fucking pressure on me, RA?? I can't take it!! One holiday at a time, godammit!! Did I mention I haven't put up my motherfucking tree yet?? Now you want me to think about New Year's Eve?? What about Valentine's Day?? Do you want me to tell you what I'm (not) doing for Valentine's Day?? What about Arbor Day?? That, too?? Shit. Easter... Flag Day... Administrative Assistants Day?? It's too much......!! Get off my fucking back already!!

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Heh. I'm done with Christmas shopping. Just so, you know. No pressure.:)

I actually agree with David ... somewhat. And only on this. New Years is one of my least favorite holidays because of all the damn pressure to have a fantastical wonderful better than last year by far time every year.

New Year's 2000 was pretty fantastical, and I've never even tried to beat it.

It gets so overwhelming that I end up just staying home and deep conditioning my hair and drinking bourbon alone.

message 5: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yeah, I agree. I kind of like keeping it quiet. Maybe I'll get drunk alone. That's almost always a good idea for me. I'm serious.

message 6: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments New Years is one of my favorite holidays. I never really feel compelled to go all out and have some riotous good time but like the idea of ushering in an arbitrary new year with celebrations. We normally drive up to San Francisco for a friend's annual party. From his house we can see the fireworks without having to endure the cold wind. It's a good chance to catch up with college friends we haven't seen since last New Years.

I doubt we'll make it up there this year though. I don't know what we'll do instead, but I'm sure we'll find something.

message 7: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I don't like parties much. I usually end up just doing my regular evening stuff.

The only holiday I really get into is Mardi Gras.

(David, I am sorta surprised that you do Christmas stuff. Wow.)

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Maybe it's much too early in the game,
Ah, but I thought I'd ask you just the same.
What are you doing New Year's,
New Year's Eve?

Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight,
When it's exactly twelve o'clock that night...
Welcoming in the New Year--
New Year's Eve.

Maybe I'm crazy to suppose
I'd ever be the one you chose
Out of a thousand invitations
You received!

Ah, but in case I stand one little chance.
Here comes the jackpot question in advance:
What are you doing New Year's
New Year's Eve?

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I think we're going to host a small get-together at our house. We'll dress up all fancy schmancy and have some delicious hors d'oeuvre and champagne. Probably play a board game or two.

Last year was interesting... some people were party hopping and left before midnight. Some people were party hopping and arrived after midnight. Some people were party hopping and were drunk before they even got to my house (they had a limo for the night). This year we're inviting a different group of people so I don't think there will be any party hopping.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I'm considering having Waffles and Wassail on New Year's Day, for brunch. I never know what to do with myself that day, and a friend several states away invited me to HER waffle party that I can't attend.
But it got me thinking about doing my own brunchy-type activity.
We'll see if I actually manage to do anything other than sleep in...

This will come as no surprise to those of you who wish I would sometimes just shut my pollyanna mouth, but I love New Years. It started to get tarnished by an association with my ex-boyfriend, who I accidentally slept with the last two New Years. Now that he's a family man and not likely to make me start my year in a way that says, "I'm doomed! This year is going to be just like every year! Way to start it out, you stupid idiot," I'm free to enjoy it fully, again.

Some of my friends and I go to The Gresham Inn, which is the biggest dive ever. One year, said ex-boyfriend and I decided not to do anything for New Years, but then decided about 20 minutes to midnight to run to the closest bar. It was one street over. We walked in and it was FILLED with bikers and their hos partying down!!! One unforgettable moment was when a lady who was dancing with her rotund companion wrapped her legs around his waist and laid her head on his shoulder for a slow dance! We've never gone anywhere else, since.

It's completely seedy and they always have a crappy band and a really scary (and free) buffet, that I do not eat from. They give out hats and noisemakers and champagne before midnight. The reason we love it is because everyone there is having a great time! There are absolutely no pretenses.

Then I text everybody I know with "Happy New Years! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!" which once prompted my lesbian friend of 28 years to wonder if I, too, was a lesbian, until I showed her how many people I sent that to.

I'll be expecting my New Year's greeting this year, Montambeau.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

You got it. I might mix it up a little.

message 14: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I want a greeting too. I have your number, Sarah. Do you have mine?

I love that you're a Pollyanna. I feel that way around here a lot, too.

I'm not a fan of the apostrophe in New Year's Eve. maybe I'm just not so much into apostrophes in general. I know its technically correct and all, the eve being possessed by the New Year in this case. But it just looks so ... eager.

message 16: by Lori (new)

Lori My favorite New Year's was back in ... um ... whatever 28 years ago was. R and I had just gotten together so I was flush with new love, and dressed up in a short skirt, red leather jacket, my fuck-me black boots, and my black hat. I felt beautiful! We were at a party a 1/2 block away from where the ball was dropping in Times Square at a very groovy party. At 11:30 we popped out to have great "seats" for Times Square, where everyone else had been there for hours and hours. I'd never done Times Square before, and never have since, but I was shocked at just how much fun it was, what good will was radiating from everybody there, even tho it was packed like sardines. One great big feel great party with total strangers but we were all connected!

It was so much fun we stayed for quite awhile afterwards, and then we just had to stroll back to our party for a warm up nip.

We stayed up til about 4AM, and then went out for breakfast at some diner.

It was all down hill from there! Nah just joking, I think what made it great was that I never put too much into New Year's, don't really care. At least the past few years I manage to stay up past midnight!

And for the past 4 years, I've been alone with all my animals, Richard and Jake go somewhere meeting up with family. I've loved it.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Sarah, send me your number on pm.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Lori, do you have pictures of that night?

I love 4am diner breakfast!!!

message 19: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) I love your new yearses, guys! New years is my favorite! FAVORITE! I usually go on a trip for the new year. I'm going to the beach this year for a whole 5 days. Hopefully I will find a biker bar and a diner, too. Because DAMN that sounds like fun!

Yay, magnet! Rockin it sans apostrophe!

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

message 22: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (randymandy) Hmmmm... Not a bad idea! I'll start planning now.

message 23: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Sarah, I'll just text you and then you can save my number to your phone. I have yours from when you came to SF.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

okey-doke!

message 25: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, I think I'm going to see "Ode to Joy" on NY Eve. I also realized I have never been drunk on NY Eve. This might be the year to change that.

(I dropped acid once, but that doesn't count)

message 26: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Watching the fireworks over the Missouri River (with a few drinks under my belt).

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

How is it possible that you've never been drunk on NY Eve? Not even in high school or college? What did you do on New Years in college? My brain in thunking on this one.

message 28: by RandomAnthony (last edited Dec 27, 2008 01:55PM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments That is an excellent question. One year in college I dropped LSD. A couple others I worked at the radio station. The last I can't remember. So maybe I was drunk.

Fireworks on NY Eve actually makes sense, TP. I wouldn't mind that. Those people who jump in the lake the next day, not so much.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, as of this morning, I've taken a vow of prohibition, so maybe I'll be sober on NY Eve for the first time since 92.

message 30: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments What are you going to do, Montambo? Will temptation be near?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I don't think I've ever been drunk on New Year's Eve. Tipsy, yes.
But then, most of my New Year's have been extremely dull, involving TV, a couch, and snack foods.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to party like a rock star, mostly likely, RA. I will probably drink even though it sounds HORRIBLE right now! I will stick to beer, though, as it doesn't fuck me up royally like wine does, apparently, starting this Fall.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
We might be going to go see Big Head Todd and the Monsters for New Years. My sister won two tickets on the radio this week, and sweeter has a friend at KBCO who might be able to get us a third. :)

message 34: by RandomAnthony (last edited Dec 31, 2008 04:05AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, people, it's NY Eve. Since KD's band isn't playing...Sally and Sweeter are busy, Montambo is partying like a rock star...

I think I'm staying home. I considered hitting the symphony but tonight's low is seven degrees, and my dog is sick, so screw all that. I may get properly drunk tonight so I can cross "drunk on NY eve" off my list. My wife and kids are in Florida, so I can get as drunk and know I can properly recover tomorrow.

If I start to drunk post tonight someone please take away my computer. Thank you. Be safe tonight, everyone, and have fun...

message 35: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) too bad you live so faraway RA--you could come to dinner at my house...I'm having a small dinner party.
take care & happy new year to y'all!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It may be New Year's Eve, but I'm at work until 6 p.m.
Woo hoo.

message 37: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments That's 8PM here, Jackie, by which time I might be drunk. Heh.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Are you going to drunk post tonight, RA?
Is everybody going to be drunk posting tonight?

This could be very amusing... :)

message 39: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Maybe. I'm staying home with my sick dog and getting drunk in her honor. If I lived closer I would get drunk and throw snowballs at you as you were leaving work.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Gee, too bad you don't live closer, then, RA.

I wish there was good Chinese food somewhere in this town. Somehow Chinese food seems like the perfect kind of food for New Year's Eve. Don't know why.

I'm going to Denver. But I might be able to do some d.p.ing when I get home. I installed this gmail add on that makes you do math before emails will send or blogs will post in preparation.

message 42: by RandomAnthony (last edited Dec 31, 2008 10:42AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments How could there be no good Chinese food in a city in the northwest? I thought that was required.

In preparation for what, Sallers?

New Year's Eve!

That is not really true, however. (should be on the lying thred) I often just tack statements like that on the end of sentences because I think it sounds good. I thought it was kind of a clever thing. Gmail kind of freaks me out sometimes. That's true.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Olympia is weird, because there's TONS of Thai (slash Korean or Vietnamese) restaurants, but no decent Chinese restaurants in town.

Portland also has really good steakhouses, I recall. What is the deal with that? Lots of cowboys and cattlemen?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Last time I went to Portland I had dim sum!

Oh I had dim sum in Hawaii this summer. Honolulu has a great Chinatown.
