New Guy (part 11)
The house was well hidden, most of it was underground. From outside it looked like a warehouse, that was about to fall over from old age. Up close, however, you could see that it was only the trashy color that gave you the deceptive assumption.
Inside, it was very spacious, and surprisingly airy. Dee felt strangely safe there, and now she had both brothers too. The room they stepped into had everything a living room could ask for, couch and all. Everything looked normal, except the weird objects on the shelfs. Dee couldn't figure out what they were for.
“Make yourselves at home.” Leo said, clearing some clutter off the floor. “Or whatever...I'm going to check on the rooms.” Then left the room.
“I wish I told my mom about this.” Katy said, regretfully. “She'll worry...”
“It shouldn't be that long.” Daemon assured her, tho he didn't look convinced. “It's better that way anyway...” he dropped himself on the couch, looking up at her worried expression. He patted the seat next to him. “Come here.” She did as he asked. “Kitten....It'll be alright.” he promised.
Dee's mind, however, was elsewhere. She was focused on the weird objects, and the peculiar design of the house. She wandered out of the room and into the hallway. There were four door. She opened the first to see a room full of machinery. Some things looked new to her, after a quick look she moved on to the other rooms. The second door opened to a nice smelling bathroom. It looked fashionable, and ideal for comfort.
She stepped out to see the third door. It had stacks of science books, tables, and tools.
Tubes lined the walls, adding a mad-scientist feel to the room. She saw a sketch book on one of the tables. Flipping through it, she saw they were precise drawings of the human brain. Another book lay right besides it, this one tho, had poetry in it. Beautifully daunting poetry!
It was filled with death, misery, and loss. She became engrossed in it as it tore at her heart and left her in tears, that she almost jumped out of her skin (which SHE, of course, can do!) when someone tapped her shoulder. It was Leo...
“Sorry,” he said, “But some of these things are lethal upon touch...” he eyed the book in her hand.
“What is this place?” she asked.
“My study actually...or lab.”
“What do you do here, with all this stuff?”
“I...” he hesitated. “ I was always fascinated with medical chemistry.”
That didn't sound like him. Not the novel-reading-Leo, she always penned him as a writer.
“I also write a bit of poetry...sometimes...” he finished, still eying the book in her hand.
“Oh...” she puts the books back down. “So, why are you so fascinated?”
“I had dreams.....of finding a cure....” she waited for him to elaborate, but he didn't volunteer any more.
“For what?” she almost lost it!
“A brain disease.” he said simply, but it sounded like she dragged it out of him.
“What brain disease?” it was Dawson who asked that question.
“It doesn't have a name, and it's too rare for anyone to care.” he tensed up on the last of his answer. “Excuse me, please don't get too close to these tubes. They're toxic.” After grabbing both notebooks from the table, he hastily exited the room , leaving two confused aliens behind....
