Joshua “Lemon” was one of the books that caught my eye from the long list of Scotia Bank Giller Prize winners because of the eccentricity of the title. The novel depicts a never-ending suffering of a teenage girl, Lemon, and how she cope with her horrid life through positivity. The darkness of the theme left me a disturbing impression in my mind that nearly made me refuse to read it but later became the reason why I want to read it. “Disturbing at times and draining”, the same reviews goodreads readers made. However, the same reviews of “unforgettable” also. Reviews left a good impression also for the book’s author, Cordelia Strube, with her strong writing style and from the good message that she painted on the book. Reading those comments moved me to read the book. Books are said to be doors to escape reality. But this is not made to escape reality but to swim deeper to it which means that I do expect depressing, humorous and enlightening parts while I glide through the waters of the book – the perception of the real world. Hearing the protagonist’s “lows”, I want to read her “ups” in life. I would like to sit beside Lemon and hear her story. I think I would be grateful meeting Lemon.
