No clue if this was posted earlier but Awaken Online is a lot like this book of "VR" games and I really enjoyed it.

Ready Player One is AMAZING and my sister says from the description of the book that it seems like Eye of Minds by James Dashner and doesn't it remind you of SAO?? Just a little..
Loved Ready Player One and have lurked in this thread for years. Just finished Awaken Online book 2 and really enjoyed it. Other books I have enjoyed in the same genre as RPO:The Nextworld Series by Jaron Lee Knuth (Level Zero, Spawn Point, and End Code)
The Insignia series by S. J. Kincaid (Insignia, Vortex, and Catalyst)
Now looking for more to read!
After reading "Ready Player One" I too caught the bug of, "what else is out there". Naturally, Armada was the next best choice. An excellent read as well. Well written and entertaining. Ernest Cline has a great way of bringing up one the greatest decades of my life. The next series I read was We Are Legion (We Are Bob). Post-apocalyptic world but with immense space travel and sci-fi epic problems. After finishing that series I started, Off to be the Wizard". Another introverted, nerdy, adventure filled with hilarious one-liners and the "obvious joke".So, to recap try the following:
Armada
We Are Legion (We Are Bob)
Off to Be the Wizard
a non-techy related series also is Hounded The Iron Druid Chronicles. One of my all-time favorites.
I am almost done with Off to Be the Wizard (Magic 2.0) so I will need more suggestions as well.
Cheers!
P.S. If you like audiobooks Luke Daniels is one of the best performers out there.
I'll put in a plug for my book Noospace, which I'm currently crowdfunding on Inkshares: https://www.inkshares.com/books/noospaceIt's got a Ready Player One feel, but with less 80's nostalgia and more thriller-style intrigue. Plus... unicorns. You can read the first 7 chapters there for free.
If you want to read more like RPO, and you like the first chapters, please pre-order Noospace and help me get it published!
Thanks! Rob
If you don't mind light novels or manga then there's Sword Art Online which is a big one, also No Game No Life, and Overlord which is more fantastical. There's lots of this type of story in light novel and manga format which you could find.
Warcross by Marie Lu has been mentioned. It needs to be mentioned again!A book about the ultimate game and its players and something that has 'wormed' it way in maybe? A well written story from the start by an author who more than knows their way around virtual worlds of gaming. This is one of the best books that falls into that YA genre that usually I despise I've read!
One of my favorite late 2017 reads. Highly recommended.
I love this thread!A few books that I loved having to do with AI or gaming that I thought were super fun reads are
JPod by Douglas Coupland
Omnitopia Dawn by Diane Duane
Locked In by John Scalzi
Daemon by Daniel Suarez (I think was mentioned a couple of times)
Off to Be the Wizard by Scott Meyer (this is so cheeky and corny)
Love in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction by Judd Trichter
I also want to include Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern which is a very ethereal, other worldly kind of novel that reminds me of VR themes.
One other series that I think parallels the fun writing or Ernest Cline is the Old Man's War series by John Scalzi.
I don't want to sound like I'm just selling a book, but if you're interested in the nostalgic fuel aspect of Ready Player One, I've written a book that deals with '80s cartoons in particular. It's been favorably compared to RPO, though, so there's that.
Brian wrote: "I don't want to sound like I'm just selling a book, ..." You might want to mention the title. ;)
Like I said, trying not to sell it too hard. It's called Old School Evil. I'm currently running a giveaway on it too, if you're interested.
Brian wrote: "Like I said, trying not to sell it too hard. It's called Old School Evil. I'm currently running a giveaway on it too, if you're interested."When it makes it to paper, let me know. I am a Luddite.
It's available in paperback right now Old School Evil (Volume 1) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1732270104/...
