Books similar to Ready Player One

A book I just read called Mr Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. It is pretty much Ready Player One set in the world of books. Highly Recomended for RP1 fans. It's just a fun mystery and it's a lot of more exciting than it sounds - the cover and advertising don't really communicate how fun it is, it has a lot of offbeat computer based stuff. For example, the main character stumbles on one mystery by making a 3D model of his store for the website and realises that the points customers buy books from draw the face of the mysterious figure he is searching for.

I'd also recommend the Russian books - the Play to Live series AlterWorld, Mahanenko's Survival Quest Survival Quest and the upcoming first book of Livadny's Phantom Server seriesEdge of Reality. Russian authors seem to be all the rage in this genre at the moment.

I also dug The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester, but Snow Crash is the most accurate approximation. I really liked Ready Player One, but I think Snow Crash is a better book.

The Stars My Destination was ... one of best si fi ever.

But not similar as read player 1 :)

Will try the other 2, I saw the movie John dies @ the end was pleasantly suprised.

Haven't finish the book yet but I loved it. Can't wait for, armada which is the second book, but nothing to do with ready player one on what I read so far, to come out. I recommend it.

The Play To Live series by D. Rus is pretty good. A series base on being trapped in an MMO. Of the highest quality? Nope. Incredibly addicting? I bought and read all four books in a four day period. I almost skipped work.

Just finished Armada and I really enjoyed it. It's getting an average of 3/5 stars on Amazon, and I'm guessing because the reviewers had too many expectations for it after the awesomeness of Ready Player One. I think it's unfair to really compare the points that Armada isn't like RPO and detract from its score from that standpoint, but that's just me. It's more Ernest Cline. He's fun!

George RR Martin said he read an advance review copy of the new book from the “Ready Player One” author. “Armada” is yet another novel inspired by classic video games, and Martin says that fans of “The Last Starfighter” will find lots to enjoy in it. Still, Martin would like Cline to try something beyond the realm of videogames. “He’s a talented guy, and I am sure that anything he writes would be terrific.”

The book is awesome if you like going on a philosophical journey and makes you question your existence as well as the difference from adult to child through the centuries, as the plot mainly centers around a boy of 6 up until he is 13 or so who has the brain capacity of great leaders. The book has been criticized A LOT so it's either you really like it or you out right hate it

Did you like Armada? I really wanted to like it, but so far I've been disappointed. It has elements of Ready Player One, but it just doesn't grip the same.

I didn't like Armada, of course wanted 2 and was excited but is like was written in a rush and for YA audience or less :(

Anyone in this thread care to comment on the Mortality Doctrine series by Dashner? Similar, in genre if not style? I'm thinking of doing a "If You Like ____, Then Try ____" display in the library where I work and was wanting to reference RPO. Thanks for your help and input, I haven't had a chance to read RPO or the Dashner series (yet).

Dream Park and its sequels ring a lot of the same bells for me. I also recommend Omnitopia: Dawn. It's about a game very similar to Oasis, but it's set in a world that's a lot less depressing.

Obviously this thread is a bit old now but I'd like to add the Magic 2.0 series. First book is called Off to be Wizard. I read it before Ready Player One and loved it. Its much more comedy than RPO but its a similar theme (the real world is not real, its a giant computer simulation that the main charater learns to control like a video game)

Try reading VEG. It is a quick read. I read it in a day but got hooked after the fourth chapter. It's the only book I've read similar to VEG with games and adventure. It's free on Smashwords until after Christmas.

Don't knoW if it has been said but We Are Legion (We Are Bob) is a book like this. It has numerous sci fi references throughout the book. Although it is an audiobook, so I don't knoW if people Would like that.
