But he had complete tunnel view when it came to the rebellion. You know the Nut part in D2? And even when Katniss said about how it would be a mine accident he still couldn't see it like that because he was so caught up with the rebellion. Katniss was his best friend and girlfriend for a little bit and he didn't even come back to help support her when her little sister, the person she tried hardest to protect and loved most in the world, was killed. In my opinion (and don't take this the wrong way) that was pretty cold-hearted.

Gale leaving wasn't cold hearted. He knew that if he came back, it might hurt Katniss, because of Prim's death. He also knew that Katniss had chosen Peeta and if he was there, thngs would just be painful. He did the right thing for both of them. He left the person he loved, because he loved her. It was really strong thing to do.
