I know Michelle, Sky's wife, is an awesome illustrator. If you're an artist looking for work, or else are in need of an artist, post away!

This is one of those skills I thoroughly wish I had. *sigh* I can recreate an image if I'm looking at the source, but sadly, my mind simply doesn't allow me to transfer images in my head to paper. Every time I try, I swear I hear electrical sparking in my head. :)

Patrick Todoroff | 54 comments I've had great luck commissioning artists at deviantArt. You have to wade through a lot of bad high-school scribble, but there is tremendous talent represented there.

I'll second that. The artist that I hired to do both my covers came from there.

FalyneVarger, aka Rachel. She does some amazing work.

Zoe Brooks (potok) | 7 comments I can recommend John Wilkinson , the artist who did the cover to my ebook. He works in the film industry graphics but has a sideline in doing interesting other work. I'll put you in touch if you are interested.

Tricia Kristufek | 32 comments I've worked with Eric Shoemaker. He's done a cover for me and for some of the authors I've edited for.

I also work with Steve Cup. While he's not done any covers for me, he's a good artist.

By the way, I thought I'd provide a link to the artist that did both of my covers.

Rachel, aka FalyneVarger, drew both covers and the title graphics on both of my covers were done by her husband, Richard, aka UberVestigium. Both are artists extraordinaire from DeviantArt.com.

Raphyel Jordan (raphyelmjordan) | 32 comments Actually I'm an illustrator as well, myself. I'm trying to get my name out there on both the writing and illustration front, so if anyone is interested, please let me know! Here's my gallery . ^_^

So you're an illustrator, huh? Man, I envy you people. I can draw, but only if I have a picture to look from. My brain just doesn't appear to have the ability to generate an image (never before seen) and then hold it there long enough to get it to paper. **sigh**

So how much do you charge for your work? Do you do all your work on the computer or do you do pencil sketches, too? Let's say someone wanted a scene from their book sketched out, or else an already existing creature redefined/cleaned up, what would you charge?

I can't speak for other authors, but I think it'd be an awesome idea to see some of the scenes I created in my book transferred to an image.

message 10: by Tricia (new)

Tricia Kristufek | 32 comments Got to add Jim Galford's artist in here. I know he updated his first book cover and is working on the second, and they look amazing!

message 11: by Raphyel (new)

Raphyel Jordan (raphyelmjordan) | 32 comments My pricing varies. It's all a matter of how much detail one wants with the illustration. A quick sketch can run from $15-$30.

Fully rendered illustrations that have detailed scenes will get closer to the $40-$60 range.

When it comes to cover art, I like to know what a person's willing to pay first

I can draw on both traditionally and cg, actually. ^_^

Jeffrey Poole (authorjmpoole) | 2287 comments Mod
Ok, here's a question for you. See my profile pic? The one with the ten legged bug? It's a "guur" from one of my novels. See how it's clearly a rough sketch? I was looking to get it "cleaned up". Get a more defined illustration of it.

Is that something you can do?

message 13: by Raphyel (new)

Raphyel Jordan (raphyelmjordan) | 32 comments Sure I can, Jeff. Why not send me a private message to discuss the details so we won't spam the rest of these good people with our chit chat? ^_^

You're doing a helluva job on the guur, Raphyel! It's so very cool to see a monster, well, a huge bug, come alive on paper!

Seriously, man, I'm searching through the books to see if there's anything else to bring to life!

Great job so far!

message 16: by Mia (new)

Mia Darien (mia_darien) | 425 comments Can this category include cover art that isn't "illustration"?

I do graphic manipulation. I recently did a pair of covers for an author in my critique group that was very pleased with them, and I'm looking to add to my portfolio. I offer what I consider "Broke Author" prices, which is $25.00 to $50.00 for the time and effort I put into it, depending on how many images and revisions, plus the cost of the stock photos. (Which varies.)

I have the smaller images for viewing here: http://www.miadarien.com/?page_id=619

And am happy to provide larger ones for closer inspection. Some of the information on the page is a little out of date according to sizes and number of images I can provide, but I'll be updating soon.

Raphyel - How are you at creating a "pencil sketch" of an amulet described in a certain way?

I started thinking that it'd be really cool to have a picture of this amulet that plays a key part of the third book and make it look like someone hand drew it, like a charcoal sketch.

Is that something you can do?

message 22: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Lyle (cindylyle) Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew of someone who does maps? I wanted to put one in my first book, but I can't draw at all. Some one who read my book made the comment that she wished there had been a map involved so I would like to include one when I republish. I have had some editing issues with my first novel, but I'm waiting until I'm finished my second before I republish. I want to release them both at the same time and I really would like to add a map. My novels are Fantasy and I need the basic realm map. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I would prefer an illustrator, but you could make your own too. There's some software just for making maps if you're willing to learn it. If you're good with art software, this is a great option: http://www.profantasy.com

If you can do even the roughest sketch of your map, any good illustrator should be able to clean it up and make it the way you see it in your head.

A.K. (akbutler) | 43 comments This is a great thread! I know it's always hard to find someone decent to do an illustration that (a) knows what they are doing, and (b) won't require a second mortgage on your house. ;)

This guy was going to do my book cover - it ended up not working, but by my fault, not his - and if you're looking for a digital painting/scifi-ish style, his is fantastic. :)

I'm looking for an illustrator! I have decided to include a few illustrations with The Lost City and I'm looking for someone that might be interested in seeing their work published in a novel!

The Bakkian Chronicles books have collectively been downloaded over 100K times so the interest is high. Might be a great way for an aspiring artist to get noticed!

If you have examples of your work I'd love to see 'em! If interested, let me know!

J.

Laurel Rockefeller (laurelarockefeller) | 31 comments I actually am a very experienced photo editor and commercial photographer. I worked in Manhattan as a commercial industrial photographer and graphic artist for about 4.5 years before the recession (which really hit us hard as the global recession hit Asia and Europe before the United States) cost me my job.

This has made me a brilliant cover artist. The covers for my own books are very complex composite images. I charge by how many images are in your cover -- which makes sense. If you are interested in learning more, http://www.laurelarockefellerbooks.com/

Lori (wickedbookcovers) | 1 comments Hi! I am a graphic designer with over 10 years experience as well as a former transcriptionist/editor. I am looking to do some cover design, illustration and editing pro bono to build up a portfolio for this industry. If you would like to see some of my graphic work, head to www.follettdesign.com. I am toying with the idea of starting another site dedicated to indie author services where I will offer cover design, illustration, photo editing/restoration, blog/web design, social media graphics, proofreading and editing services and possibly formatting. If you would like me to consider you for pro bono work, email me at lori@follettdesign.com. I will take a select few with whom to work, fiction only at this time. Thanks! :)

Kyra Halland (kyrahalland) I'd like to recommend my cover artists:

Design by Katt https://www.facebook.com/DesignByKatt (I had her do covers for a couple of my stand-alone fantasy-romances)
me-illuminated (Mominur Rahman) http://me-illuminated.deviantart.com/ (doing the covers for my 6-book fantasy-western series)

custom cover art at very reasonable rates, and they've both been great to work with.
