well, my tidbit was apparently NOT completely correct- upon further research, it would seem that while MOST of the "door close" buttons don't work in the US, some of them- and most of the ones in the rest of the world- DO actually work...sorry!

If they do work, and its an old building, you can hack the elevator, by hitting that button and your floor simultaneously a few times. The elevator will go straight to your floor. It even does work, I do it @ my gmas beach house, which is very crowded!
