Kirby | 31 comments well, my tidbit was apparently NOT completely correct- upon further research, it would seem that while MOST of the "door close" buttons don't work in the US, some of them- and most of the ones in the rest of the world- DO actually work...sorry!

message 52: by [deleted user] (new)

If they do work, and its an old building, you can hack the elevator, by hitting that button and your floor simultaneously a few times. The elevator will go straight to your floor. It even does work, I do it @ my gmas beach house, which is very crowded!

Ah, it's fine...if you think about it, considering they will eventually close on their own, it sounds very logical. :)

Did you know that...

Stewardesses and reverberated are the two longest words (12 letters each) that can be typed using only the left hand. The longest word that can be typed using only the right hand is lollipop. Skepticisms is the longest word that alternates hands.

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people do.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than it's brain.

A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out.

It's impossible to sneeze with your eyes open.

You can't kill yourself by holding your breath.

An animal epidemic is called an epizootic.

All porcupines float in water.

The only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating a letter is uncopyrightable.

A duck's quack doesn't echo, and no one knows why???

In Spanish, if you put more stress on a letter it could change the word. An example is papa which is potato and papá which is dad. Or another is when you're trying to say mom (mamá) and you call her mama (I hope this doesn't offend you, but you would be calling her a boob if you don't stress the A).
It's just like how grammar saves lives. Stressing words in Spanish saves you from embarassment.

Did you know that before Marie Antoinette was guillotined (spelling?), she intended for her last words to be "Children, I go to your father forever" or something to that effect. However, she stepped on her executioner's foot, so her actual last words were, "Monsieur, I beg your pardon."

Did you know...

For five years, Webster's New International Dictionary mistakenly included an entry for dord, a word which did not exist.

The longest word in the English language, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. The only other word with the same amount of letters is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconioses, its plural.

The average person falls asleep in seven minutes.

Studies show that if a cat falls off the seventh floor of a building it has about thirty percent less chance of surviving than a cat that falls off the twentieth floor. It supposedly takes about eight floors for the cat to realize what is occurring, relax and correct itself.

Murphy's Oil Soap is the chemical most commonly used to clean elephants.

Emus and kangaroos cannot walk backwards, and are on the Australian coat of arms for that reason.

Cookie Monster's real name is Sid.

The 'y' in signs reading "ye olde.." is properly pronounced with a 'th' sound, not 'y'. The "th" sound does not exist in Latin, so ancient Roman occupied (present day) England used the rune "thorn" to represent "th" sounds. With the advent of the printing press the character from the Roman alphabet which closest resembled thorn was the lower case "y"
