This doesn't have to be about the Hunger Games...just post fun facts (think: facts that haven't changed the world). I'll start us off...

Did you know that 111,111 x 111,111=1,234,567,8987,654,321?

Ohohohohohohohoh

I love useless knowledge!!!

Did you know that a pineapple is actually a very large berry?
Did you know that if the glaciers melted the seas would rise enough to cover the statue of liberty's head?
Did you know that orange carrots are not natural- rather the Dutch bred together red and yellow ones to make carrots that were their national colors?

Off the top of my head :)

That is awesome! I also LOVE useless knowledge...this one's random:

Did you know that Matthew Broderick was 25 years old when he played the role of General Robert Gould Shaw in the movie "Glory?" (Note: Robert Gould Shaw was the 23 year old leader of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment in the Civil War(Union army). He was killed along with half of his troops while attempting to take the Confederate fort, Fort Wagner, which is near Charleston, SC. The fort was never taken by the Union army.)

Did you know ...

That a crazy Jack's Mannequin fan adds pictures of cats to, like, ALL of the lead singer, Andrew's, and many of the rest of the bands pics? http://andrewandcats.tumblr.com/page/5

That there was no punctuation until the 15th century?

There are more telephones than people in Washington, D.C.

By raising your legs slowly and laying on your back, you can't sink in quicksand.

In Albania, nodding your head means 'no' and shaking your head means 'yes'.

A fly that appears to have drowned can be revived with the use of everyday table SALT!

(My favorite is the first one <3, but they are all pretty cool. :)

Did you know that...

Peanuts are part of the legume family.

An orange is not a fruit, it is a berry.

The saying "Cool as a cucumber" actually has some truth.

A snore can be as loud as 80 decibels...that's as loud as a pneumatic drill breaking up concrete.

message 12: by harriet (new)

harriet (harriet64) IKR

did you know that...

If you are in a car for 5 hours with two kids, ones 2 and the others 3 months old, screaming their heads off, by the time yoy get there, your head hurts???

message 13: by Kirby (new)

Kirby | 31 comments well, here's my favorite tidbit I learned (courtesy of NOVA):

the "door close" button on an elevator is not hooked up to anything- it's just to give people the illusion of control.

Did you know that...
It is impossible to lick your elbow

Mr. Owl ate my metal worm spelled backwards reads "mr. owl ate my metal worm"

Coca-Cola was originally green

Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse
has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air,
the person died because of wounds received in battle.
If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

Only two people
signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, John Hancock and Charles Thomson. Most of the rest signed on August 2, but the last signature wasn't added until 5 years later.

If you were to spell out numbers, you'd have to go to one "one thousand" to find an A.

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase...'Goodnight , sleep tight'?

Well, some of this isn't USELESS knowledge, but it's pretty interesting.

harriet (harriet64) Did you know that...

There is no such thing as cold, it's just less hot.

The colour white is made up of all the colours put together.

The real primary colours are green, blue and red... whereas the art primary colours are red, yellow ad blue, because they cannot be made of other colours

Did you know that Arlington National Cemetery was Robert E. Lee's plantation? The first Union soldiers were buried where his wife's rose garden was...probably out of spite.

Mouse sperm is bigger than elephant sperm! And, according to him, (i doubt this, but who knows!?) that is why elephants are afraid of mice.

Wow...this also isn't exactly useless knowledge but...

Did you know that hot air balloons were first used during the Civil War by the Union soldiers...first, they were used to take pictures, but before long, they were being used to spy on the Confederate camps...that is, until the Confederate soldiers figured out what was going on...
