The thing about Twilight is they say that it beat out Harry Potter for the No. 1 spot on the NYT bestsellers list....well, Eclipse did. Harry Potter was on that list for a decade. If Twilight had really knocked HP off the list, it would have happened when Twilight came out in 2005...the same year that HBP came out.
But it didn't.
New Moon came out in 2006, and it still didn't knock HP off the No. 1.
Eclipse came out in 2007, the same year as Deathly Hallows, but 1 month later. That's when it knocked HP off the list. When HP was over, and there were no more books to look forward to. People needed a book to try and fill the hole that was left by HP ending. Unfortunately, Twilight seemed to be it. Twilght was riding the Potter coat tails.
So really, SMeyer owes JK Rowling a bit of thanks and gratitude for her success.....that is totally my own opinion.

dammit i fuckin hate twilight too, its trash but even i gotta say there are some (very few) original ideas and hell...its just so bad that fact that they made a movie of it kinda makes me sick... it was a poorly exicuted and cheapley made movie but it was funny... and yeah robbert pattinson sounded slow (also funny) and kristen kurst only had like two facial expressions and also stephinie meyer is most likley going to put out midnight sun and the three other twilight books from edwards p.o.v even though she says shes not(bullshit) but i tnink we can get past that and if your like myself think of all the laughter the books and the movie (especially the movie) brought you. (also F.Y.I i know i have tons of grammical errors im just to lazy to fix them.) and yes crap would probably the most appropriate word for everything twilight is.

I'm coming into this late, but I can't quite sympathize with someone who knowingly comes into a clearly-labeled "TWILIGHT HATERS GROUP" and starts waxing poetic on why they LOVE Twilight.
As someone who is in the publishing industry, I can tell you that "Twilight" was meant to fill in the gap left by Harry Potter. The big New York people wanted something they could cash in on as a phenomenon and voila, this novel. The first book in the series was kind of an underground thing and not too many people were reading it. It had a certain appeal to its niche market and frankly it should have stayed there. We've seen this before with the incredibly wretched "Eregon". Too much hype and not enough substance. Stephanie Meyer simply was not ready for prime time.
The plot is trite, the writing attempts to sound like someone who was actually a teenage girl, but there are certain clues that give it away. Unlike HP, which appealed to not just kids, but adults of all genders, Twilight appeals primarily to teen girls. Not a bad thing in and of itself, but disasterous when trying to be the next HP. Moreover, Stephanie Meyer had no idea exactly what she wanted this series to be--a fluffy romance between a vampire and a human girl or her slyly injecting her religious beliefs in disguise of a vampire novel. In trying to make Bella the 'every girl', by the time book 2 rolled around, she became this melodramatic user who didn't know how to go on living. She was whiny and self-absorbed.
Meyer also had NO idea how to end it, hence 'Breaking Dawn' was a torturous piece of drivel that made absolutely NO sense whatsoever. Why did Bella get pregnant when vampires have no means of reproducing? Why did Bella suddenly give up her autonomy? And why was the final confrontation with the Volturi so SHORT? And of course, the kicker--that thing who shall not be named--her daughter? Why do that to one of the few decent characters in Twilight--Jacob? It was like a Disney-style ending that everyone lived happily ever after.
