At our meeting tonight we've decided for the topic culture in general. Travel books will be just one possibility among others.

The doodle will be put up on Saturday. It would be great to have at least 4 or 5 suggestions altogether.

Bonne nuit! :)

Kiwi (Karin) (kiwikarin) Hi there. My suggestion for the March read is Lisa See's 'Snowflower and the secret fan'. An excellent book about a girl growing up in China just before foot binding was banned. Eye-opening to the way women were viewed in China.
Take care, Karin

Hi, I'd like to suggest "Snow Country" by Yasunari Kawabata. Its about a wasted love between a wealthy man and an onsen geisha, gives an insight into japanese attitudes to permanence. See you soon, Becca

Caroline (liney) | 22 comments Hi,

I thought the meeting was tomorrow night so I missed the discussion yesterday...I hope that everyone liked the book as much as I did (thanks Alan!).

I'm not sure I've totally understood the theme for this month's book, but if travel writing is included I'd suggest:
Peter Hessler's "River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze"

Viviane | 172 comments Hi,

More from the 'difference of cultures' than from the travelling angle, I'd like to suggest "Brick lane" by Monica Ali : the story of a girl from Bangladesh sent to London for an arranged marriage. I haven't read it nor seen the film but both were recommended to me.

See you soon,

Viviane

See you soon!

The next book club meeting will be on April 10th.

See you then !

Little change of plans: Would April 12th also work for you? This would mean a little more time to read and a little less stressy return from the Easter weekend.

Bye and have fun with Brick Lane
