Kristi (kristicoleman) Ok, so after our little break, how's everyone liking the book? Who is really getting on your nerves, and what is your favorite scene from this section??

Martha (marthas48) Ned's in a mess ... broken leg and in a nest of vipers. I cannot stand the Lannisters ... except for Tyrion. Can hardly wait to see what they pull next though.

I do so like Jon. What a good heart this young man has! I hope he decides to leave the North Wall.

Catelyn's sister and nephew are a bit crazy, aren't they? Did anyone else catch a hint that maybe the Lannister's weren't responsible for Jon Arryn's death. That hinting that he was the one who wanted to send his son away from the mother made me wonder. She's not right in the noggin & probably wouldn't have reacted well to her son being sent away.

It's been awhile since I read it, but most of the scenes that show Jon at his best are favorites of mine.

Ellen Librarian (ellenlibrarian) | 172 comments I thought the open jail cell that Tyrion was in was one of the scariest things I've read about in fiction in ages. I'm glad he got out of there for my sake!

Martha (marthas48) Oh I agree Ellen! Terrible.

Kristi (kristicoleman) Martha...if Jon leaves the Wall, they will hunt him and execute him...I hope he stays and lives, and maybe had a good influence on the men there.

I agree about Catelyn's sister too...she is whacky! I wonder if she's reacting to them trying to send her son away or if she's just one of those mothers who wants her children to have everything and in the process ruins the kids.

Don't you love all the foreshadowing in this book!?! It's great how it makes you wonder anout what will happen next!

Ellen, I agree with you about the jail cell scene...I would have been passing out if it was me!

Martha (marthas48) Kristi, I think it was mentioned that he hadn't made it permanent yet. That when he goes into this new assignment (I forget what it's called) then it will be permanent, but until then he could change his mind. That's what made me think he needs to 'get while the gettin's good!' LOL I doubt he leaves, but I hate that life for him, although I think he's already shown that he will excel at it. I love this book!! Plan to start the 2nd one as soon as I'm done with this one.

Kristi (kristicoleman) I'll be reading the 2nd on after we finish with this too...maybe a Side-Read???

Martha (marthas48) I would love it, Kristi! I ordered mine right after I started this one when I realized that I love his writing style.

Kristi (kristicoleman) Yep, me too! I can't wait to get to Clash of Kings!

Ellen Librarian (ellenlibrarian) | 172 comments I'm up for it!

Catherine (catsmeeow) Yeah I got the next couple books too already!!

The open jail was so scary.

Catelyn's nephew is awful and the fact that her sister lets him have free rein is just insanity. The fight was a waste of a good life. Ser Vardis didn't even want to fight.

Interesting idea Martha! I didn't catch the idea that maybe Lady Lysa was responsible for Jon Arryn's death because she didn't want to be separated. She does certainly seem loony... But I still think that the Lannisters are scheming something against the king and it may have led to Jon's death... They just seem so fishy. Not sure Tyrion is really responsible though. He seems to be on the outskirts of the Lannisters.

Deana (ablotial) Interesting section!

Yes, Jon said since he hasn't taken the oath yet he -could- just continue to keep riding and riding until he was back at Winterfell with no penalty. But once he takes the oath he is stuck. And it sounded like he'd made up his mind to stay, with the part about remembering they are his HALF siblings and that his father's wife wouldn't welcome him. Plus the effort he went through for the fat kid ... what's the point if Jon were to leave? I think he'll stay, but I don't know that he will be happy.

The king made me quite angry in this section. Not a fan of him.

I don't want Jon to take the Oath but I fear he will. I find the concept of The Wall really confusing. I can understand why criminals might take it instead of punishment but why would any nobleman want it for their child?

Also, I've just started the TV series (watched 1st 2 episodes) and it's BRILLIANT! I think it sticks reasonable close to the book. They haven't yet changed any of the plot although they have changed little bits of background information and added more sex scenes!

Suzanne (thysanura) Catelyn's memory of Littlefinger and Brandon Stark's duel was pretty interesting, too. I love the way GRRM manages to get bits of the past into the story without disrupting the main action. I find myself paying extra attention to dialogue and dreams for clues about character histories and connections, too.

And speaking of, I got caught on that dream of Ned's about the 3 vs. 7 at the tower... hm...

I hope you like the series, Heather! I watched season 1 as it aired and thought it was great. It is pretty amazing how much of the plot the tv writers managed to squeeze in there. Some of the actors were perfect, too.

Martha, it didn't occur to me, but knowing how attached Lysa is to her little pig of a son, I can now see that twist developing.
