Discuss Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone or the Sorcerer's Stone here.

What do you think about it?
What parts did you like the best?
What would you rate it?
Did it live up to your standards?
Was it better than the movie?

Tell us about it here.

Everyone seems a little hesitant to start, so I'll start.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone...
It took my best friend about 6 to 5 years to get me to read this book. No seriously, my best friend was always reading the Harry potter series over and over again and I was always wondering why.
P.S. I haven't read this book in about 6 months now. I'm planning on reading it again soon.

What parts do I like about it... I liked the part where they find out about Fluffy, the three headed dog. I alo liked the line where Hermione goes, "...We could have been killed, or worse, expelled."
And then Ron goes and says something like, "She really needs to get her priorities straight."

I'd probably give it a 4.5 or even a five.

I think with the reputation that the Harry Potter books have, you expect the books to be next to perfect. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone sets the rest of the series up. If it was really bad, then you wouldn't bother to conitnue reading, even if the other books were better. However, I absolutely adored the book. XD

You know how most books are better than the movies because it has more details, and all that most of the time?
Honestly, I loved the movie as much as I loved the book. XD

To anyone who has seen the Harry Potter movies - Can anyone tell me what happened to Voldemort's nose?
Voldemort had a nose in the first movie and then his nose kind of flattened and then they became slits.

Kauthar | 149 comments i had to re-read this book b/c i didn't remember what happened. i still love it. now i remember why i started reading the harry potter books. i rated it a five.

my favorite part was when Harry, Hermione, & Ron had to go through the trap door to stop who they thought was going to take the stone, Snape, and get past the vines, the chessmen, & the logic test.

i think the movie was okay. its just one of those times where the book is better than the movie.

Jacy (jazabell) | 73 comments I first read this in my late teens and the first chapter seemed to drag on forever. I seriously had to force myself to get through it. There was just do much detail and in truth I was kinda lost. But once I got through that chapter it really picked up and I loved the book. I have read it several times to my kids and the love it just as much.
My favorite part is the sorting hat. I feel that it's the pivotal moment when the series is set up and events start to fall into place.
I gave it 4 stars. I think it set up the series quite well. Since I read it before it got to stardom it was all I could have hoped for. I like stories that draw you in and this one really does.
I tend to like books better than the movies. Since this one stuck so close to the book I like it a lot. The director said that his daughter would have been mad if he didn't stick to the book and he could let her down. I feel that watching the movie is almost like re-reading the book.
Now to answer the nose question...in the first book Voldemort was a spirt of his old self, so we saw how he was...when they recreated his body in book 4, Nagini had nursed Voldemort back to life so he took on the properties of her. Snakes have two slits for nostrils and I think that was what the director was getting at.

Jessie Radford (ladysdeath) By my standards the book will always be better than the movie. They just left out so much from the story like peeves! I mean come on he did play an important part in the books. The first Harry Potter has still managed to be an ageless book to me. it doesn't matter how many times I have read it, I still want to pick it up again and read it once more. I honestly can't wait for the day that I can pass my collection down to my son so he can enoy them. overall I give the first book 10 out of 10 and just to show I'm not biased I seriously on give the second book like 5 out of 10 it really wasn't that attention grabbing to me. I didnt really have no expectations for the book when I first picked it up 10 years ago a friend had talked me into reading them and I am so glad that I did.

Agreed. Although on my behalf, it took a lot of continuous recommendations from most of my friends before I actually read it. I've reread every book a few times now. Never looked back. :)

The same for me lol, I just get in the spirit and start re-reading them. It broke my heart when a few got damaged in my last move. But my fiance was a sweetheart and bought me the whole collection again XD

Harry potter is my all time fav. I can read it over and over again and never get sick of it.. First read it when I was 18 now 32 and still loving it.
My fav line which is in the book and the movie is 'nearly headless? How can u be nearly headless' for some reason that just sticks in my head each time I either read it or hear it.

Rebecca (hobbitual_reader) I've read all of my Harry Potter books over and over and still I plan to read them again when I've read some of my new books. I never get bored of them, I first read them in Primary school, when I was probably around 8 or 9 years old. Now i'm 20, and I still love them. Dumbledore never fails to make me laugh :)
