Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments Has anyone ever noticed that there seems to be a time problem regarding when Lorelai moved to Stars Hollow? The Inn owner says that she turned up at the inn with a baby, but in the flashback episode where Sherry is in labour, we see Rory at about age 10 or 11 asking if they were going to live at the inn. There is also a town meeting in season four where Lorelai says that she has lived in Stars Hollow 8 years. At this point, Rory is in college, meaning she would be 19 or so - making her 11 when lorelai moved to Stars Hollow. However, in another flashback, we see Emily and Richard looking for a young Lorelai and Rory and seeing that a pram has been left behind, they realize that Lorelai has run away with Rory. But Rory wouldn't need a pram at the age of 10-12. Also, Rory says several times that her and Lane went to kindergarten together....so....how long have they actually lived in Stars Hollow?

I can't seem to figure out how long they have lived in Stars Hollow!

I've noticed another thing. In the very first episode, the Pilot, Season 1, we see Lorelai on her way to Luke's for some coffee. It's cold outside, it looks like late November or something, there's hardly any leaves on the trees and Lorelai and everyone else is wearing hats, scarves and winter jackets. But then after the pilot episode, it seems like there's almost late summer and the climate suddenly changes. everything is still green and warm. Is it just me or what? I dunno I just thought it looked a bit odd.

Jennifer (jenmarie1117) | 18 comments Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Lorelai ran away when Rory was, like, a year old and lived at the inn for several years, and then purchased the house in Stars Hollow when Rory was 11. I don't think the Independence Inn is within city limits (kind of like that house Emily was going to buy Luke and Lorelai)?

Yes that is the impression I was under too, but in the flashbaxck episode where Rory is asking if they are going to love there, they are dancing around at the Independence Inn, and she is an older child...

message 5: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenmarie1117) | 18 comments I don't remember the flashback episode... which one is it?

message 6: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments I think it was the last episode of season 3

message 7: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenmarie1117) | 18 comments I'll have to check when I get home. :-)

message 8: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (geekjonesey) | 1 comments woah never noticed this time thing and I've seen all the seasons more then 10 times... There's a lot of inconsistency in the episodes tho.

message 9: by Diana (new)

Diana I don't remember a lot of the flashback episodes, but in one, the Inns owner (I don't remember her name) is telling Emily that Lorelai showed up with Rory as a baby. And I think they're mentioned moving to Stars Hollow when Rory was maybe 8 or 11 (maybe both). But then it does get confusing that Rory mentions knowing Lane since kindergarten and she also says she participated in a lot of Miss Patty's classes, which are probably under 11.

message 10: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments i know. It's so inconsistent, its hard to believe that this was not picked up on. I mean...we are talking about an 10/11 year anachronism!

message 11: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenmarie1117) | 18 comments SO I remember the Sherry having the baby episode in Season 3, with Rory being a baby and what-not. I just don't remember them dancing around the Independence Inn flashback.

message 12: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments Its definitely that episode - when they do their last walk through the inn before it closes

message 13: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker The dancing scene is a deleted scene that you can see on the DVDs. The Inn has burned down and Lorelai is walking out of it for the last time. She looks back and sees the memory.

I was always under the impression that they lived at the Inn until they bought the house. Rory would have gone to school in Stars Hollow and have met Lane. But I had forgotten about the inconsistency in when they bought the house.

message 14: by Antje (new)

Antje | 10 comments I am currently rewatching the series for the third time and in season one (episode where there they collect clothes and stuff for the charity sale and later go to the Bangles concert) they are definitely saying that Lorelai bought the house when Rory was 11 (they talk about Luke's ex Rachel and Lorelai wonders why she didn't know her and Sookie says something like: you just bought this house and had an 11 year old kid).
As I always understood it, Lorelai started working at the Inn when Rory was still a baby or a toddler - although I always figured she must have been 18 by then because of minor with child running away from home etc. - and then they lived in that garden shed at the Inn. Rory obviously would have gone to kindergarten and school in Stars Hollow but maybe Lorelai was not so much involved in town life. The dancing scene is definitely a deleted scene, I remember that also. I will watch out for this one and any comments regarding the house purchase as I watch the episodes.

message 15: by Gabeline (new)

Gabeline | 2 comments Here is a transcript of the deleted scene for those who don't have the DVD's:

I want to re-watch the show SO badly now!

i agree. i was under the impression that lorelai ran away when rory was a baby, lived in the shed and worked at the inn thanks to the nice owner of the Inn and then bought the house and moved into town and became active in the town when Rory was older. This is plausable because how else would Lorelai, who refused all of her parents wealth by running away with her illegitimate daughter, have been able to afford that gorgeous classic new england "manor"

message 17: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments No I get that - I realise they didn't buy the house for ages - they lived in the tool shed at the back of the inn. But Rory went to kindergarten with Lane, and did dancing with Miss Patty when she was young. The other characters of Stars Hollow treat her as if they have known her all her life too - not for ten years. Eg: Taylor wanting her to do the ice cream queeen thing for his shop, Babette wanting to go to Rory's graduation etc...

i guess i just figured that since Rory went to school, her mother put her into other child related activities that were surrounding the school where she went. And i also got the sense that with Lorelai being a hardworking young single mom, the people of the town helped to raise her . . . almost as though they looked upon these two as their charity case or something like "it takes a village to raise a child" type attitude. I don't know. This is just what i assumed.

Maybe Lorelai involved Rory into all of this stuff when she was younger, but then that Lorelai herself didn't really start to participate in things until she was more settled and had actually moved into the village of Stars Hollow? Where is Amy SHerman-Palladino? Maybe we should ask her and try to pick her brain. lol.

message 19: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments that's what we need - the brains behind it to fill us in!!!

message 20: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I agree with Kim's theory about how the whole town seems to know her. I never envisioned the Inn to be terribly far from town, just not technically zoned for the town. I think Rory was involved in things, Lorelai to a lesser extent, and the townspeople knew her and more or less helped raise her.

One thing I don't understand is Luke's Diner. It seemed like the show went back and forth on it being open forever and Luke being super close to Lorelai and Rory always and then to where he opened it around the time Lorelai and Rory moved into the house. Anyone have any thoughts there?

message 21: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments I don't remember that - i do remember him saying that the first time he met Lorelai was when she walked into the diner begging for coffee

message 22: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmiky) yea, that one is perplexing. Luke kind of acted like Rory's not quite so surrogate father, but a postive male figure in her life nonetheless. . . so it seemed like he knew her all along . . .i dunno. Another question for the creators. lol

message 23: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments it just seems a bit weird that everyone treats rory like her surrogate parents (especially the party in the final episode) if her mother wasn't really involved in the town/they hadn't moved there till rory was 11

yes, I agree. And didn't she get kind of mad at Luke when Lorelai and Luke started dating . . . or were dating. I feel like at one point when they were dating, Rory got mad at Luke cause he was acting like her father . . . and she was like, You're not my father just cause you're dating my mom!

I read somewhere that the Pilot was shot in Ontario, Canada and the rest of the episodes were shot in Calif. They probably had to bundle up to shoot the pilot - it's pretty cold up here in Canuck Country!! :)

Yes that's right - they talk about that in the special features. It's quite funny watching the pilot after you know that because the whole set looks different. Luke's looks totally different and Stars Hollow is not Stars Hollow at all!!

Kim (kimmiky) ~CaLaMiTy~*I fight for Panem* !I is in love With F wrote: "I've definetly noticed. Has anyone noticed that they use two different actresses for Mia? One for her wedding and one for the first time we see her?"

which one was Mia? I think I also remember that in the pilot episode they mention Lane's father, but then for the rest of the series, including her wedding, Lane's father is never mentioned, which I find odd, since Mrs. Kim is so strict about Lane and specifically with boys in general.

I always assumed there was no Mr Kim. But I quite often see things about how Lane has a father that presumably lives in the Kim house, but is never seen. Weird.

Yes you are right. The first Mia is played by Elizabeth Franz, and I can't find any info for the second Mia, but its definitely not the same person.

message 30: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8 comments I think the actress who played the second Mia played a major character on a show called "Picket Fences" in the 90's starring Tom Skerritt. Her daughter on that show was played by Holly Marie Combs.

message 32: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Yeah, that's always confused me too. I always thought they met when Lorelai moved to SH. I just don't know how she could have got for so long without discovering Luke's in such a small town.

message 33: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments I just noticeda discrepancy in the set. In season 2 there is an episode where Lane is grounded and she calls Rory at the diner. She is looking at the diner from her bedroom window with a telescope and Lukes has 3 stories - 2above the diner. !!!!

Also the setting changed... In the Pilot Luke s dinner is a free standing house and than his house was at the corner.
I ´ll never understand why they switched Luke´s...

message 35: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 6 comments Also, when Luke is setting up for Jess to arrive, he says that Jess's dad, Jimmy, only left a little while ago. Then, later on, he says that Jimmy left only a couple of days after Jess was born. WHICH ONE WAS IT!!!!!!

But I´m glad that the producer decided to give him a more important character to play. Because what is Stars Hollow without crazy Kirk?:D

message 38: by Lucie (new)

Lucie | 20 comments Well, this is not about timing issue, however it's a weird inconsistency, at least for me. Have someone noticed what happened to Lane's boyfriend Dave? I know he went to college so it might be understandable if two of them would break up. However, in one episode in season 4 is Lane still with him (it's the episode when Mrs. Kim wants to send him the "marriage jug"). And then - couple of episodes later, Lane's all in with Zach. So what happened to Dave? Have I missed anything?

I've been rewatching the show and saw that the marriage jug argument with Dave happened in Season four, episode eight. But Lane doesn't have her first date with Zach until season five episode 7, so it doesn't happen quite so quickly. But I don't remember anything official mentioning that Lane and Dave broke up either. They must have just given up on the difficult long distance.

message 40: by Dini, the master of meaning (new)

Dini | 691 comments Mod
I think there was an official break up... can't remember when. But it's probably related to backstage issues -- the actor playing Dave not continuing his role, and they probably think rather than getting someone else to play Dave it'd be better to create a different storyline for Lane with Zach. And I'm glad they did, I loved Lane with Zach!

message 41: by Taryn (new)

Taryn (anotherdesperatehousewife) | 78 comments They had a fight over the marriage jug - but there was no mention of a break up after that.

Elizabeth, that was said in Season 1, around the time when Lorelai was considering borrowing money from her parents for Rory's school.

I just watched this scene -- it was an extra from the graduating from Chilton episode, last eppie of season 3. (Those Are The Strings, Pinocchio.)

That scene wasn't their first time at the inn, but a during the time they were already living there. Lorelei said they wouldn't live there forever -- present Lorelei said they lived there 10 years which supports the they moved there when Rory was a baby timeline.

Rory refers to the inn as their home, but not their new home.

I think the confusion is that young Lorelei has a line about Rory getting her own room, but that seems to be referring to her plans for their future and someday house, not saying the inn is their new place.

In short, Lorelei dreamed of a home of their own, Rory was hesitant to leave the only home she'd ever known, the inn.

message 49: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenmarie1117) | 18 comments I have been wracking my brain on the ages of the characters. I swear in the beginning, lorelais parents were not married long enough for their 40th anniversary. But the one that drives me bonkers is rorys age. She has her 16th birthday a few episodes in, BUT in the pilot she is already 16, and drove in the earliest episodes! Aaahhh!!!

message 50: by Sammy (new)

Sammy Young (darcyalcottpotter) What is actually said in the DVD scene is "are we gonna live here FOREVER?" and then Lorelia explains that one day they'll have their own home, which we know happens when Rory's 11. And they still lived in Stars Hollow but when Lorelia was a maid she had to work like a trojan and there for never had any time for town stuff but Rory still would've had to have gone to Kindergarten with Lane and whenever Lorelia had time off it would be spent with Rory she would never have had much time or money to eat out at Luke's all the time which explains why they had only known each other three years before season 1.
