Well interesting, that. I could hardly stand it!

Tell me why you liked it -- maybe I'm missing the point, just.

I think it is because we approached it as a humorous, character sketch. We have no idea why it is even listed as a mystery since it simply isn't. We read it years ago so I can't give you details but we liked the fish out of water aspect, the essence of a stranger in a strange land finding his way and a place to fit in. Yes, we felt that some of the people and situations were mean spirited or too far out there, even saying to each other that this doesn't show Ireland's people in the best light. I guess it came down to us enjoying his journey, despite his setbacks, of his or others doing.

Sorry, I can't give you more than that but it's been a number of years. We can't speak for the 2nd book since we don't have it yet. I can certainly understand and appreciate your opinion in your review.

They are mostly really easy, quick reads. I've got Beatrix Potter's Journal coming up -- THAT's going to slow me down! You could use that one for a door stop! I try to read an hour a day -- since I often have to stop & rest my back, that works out pretty well.

Hey there Jeannette and Kate (I almost didn't recognize you!) Looks like an egg, or a rock.

I regularly fall asleep with a book on my chest. My husband comes along and takes my glasses off my nose, puts my book away (losing my place) and turns out my light. Which means I wake up at 5 in the morning... QED!

She's using a brush to take the dirt of an artifact (that looks suspiciously like an egg, which archaeologists generally don't dig up, so maybe it is a rock.) I just felt the need for a facelift, so to speak.

My husband is German, so we went to visit his folks (we go every year now). We took a long week in the middle to visit France and Belgium.

Hayes, I do the same for my husband every night. He falls asleep, and doesn't even drop the book. But, I always put the book mark in the right place for him.

Last night was jet-lag, tonight I am back to normal (for me!), which means I should have been in bed half an hour ago! The girl has her BFF over, and we've been looking at photos. But, now I'm outta here!

It's 9:00 am & I'm sweating like the proverbial. UGH! But today is supposed to be the last 106 day, tomorrow down to 101 and Saturday down to 97. Monday back to normal at low 90s. Which will seem like a trip to Arctic after a whole week of this!

Where in Germany? My BFF is spending the year in Hamburg. Because she wanted to. But she's having a tough time -- despite many years of German lessons, she can't understand most of what's said to her, or the tv. Which is very disappointing!

We were in Hildesheim, which is also in the north, just south of Hannover. Tell your friend to hang in there, because her language skills should improve rapidly just by being immersed in it. I learned in Germany, so maybe she could take a night course for adults at the Folkshochschule (adult ed)? What is she doing in Hamburg?

It's been in the 80s here in Iowa all week, but blessedly cool at night, and not humid! It's supposed to hit 91 today, so I'm going to have to turn the air on in a bit. Sad to think of low 90s as cool, isn't it?

I don't think that's going to happen for her. She's been over there since last October, & it doesn't seem to be getting any better for her. Someone told her that one day it would just "click in", probably at around 4 months, but it hasn't happened yet. She's very frustrated! She's wanted to go live in Germany for many years & finally got the chance, & is just having a miserable time because she can't understand the language. I feel really bad for her, but she's determined to stick out her year -- so maybe the German fairy will whack her on the head soon, & she'll be able to enjoy the rest of her stay.

Then she should definitely look into adult ed. It took me 6 months of classes, but I got to be fluent in that time.

No, she is just living there for a year. The fulfillment of a lifelong ambition. She is going to Hildesheim on a day trip in October. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I think she has finally given up on being so fluent in German that she can hang out with the natives, and is just going to start being a tourist. There is a great deal of difference between being able to read and conjugate a language & being able to speak it, & my suspicion is that learning to speak another language just doesn't come easily to her. But I am glad to see that she is starting to enjoy her time there -- it's a big financial outlay to spend the time being miserable!

I wish her all the best! I took language classes, and I had to speak with my husband's friends and associates. Hildesheim is a nice city. She should take the Rose Tour (she can get a brochure in the city). There is a tourist bureau in the city middle. She should have lunch at Cafe Amadeus (great pizza).
