Oh... I don't get it.

J.R. Barker | 69 comments kendal mint cake, made in kendal in Scotland. It's basically sugar and mint solidified, sometimes with stuff added like chocolate.
It's used the world over as an energy booster. Great for climbing mountains, scottish or otherwise.

Not I'm not a sales rep for kendal.

message 104: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I've never heard of it. But I shall keep an eye out for it from now on.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Is Kendal not in the Lake District? Pretty sure Edmund Hillary took mint cake up Everest, and Shackleton took supplies on his trips. Watch your teeth, mind, it's sugary!!

message 106: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Yea, when you google Kendal it comes up with Cumbria.

message 107: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yes it's in the Lakes District. England, not Scotland. I lived in Kendal for a short while. It's a lovely town.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I find them disgusting but unfortunately there is nothing better on a long hike :(

message 109: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I love Kendal Mint Cake. Unfortunately I could mainline them!

message 110: by J.R. (new)

J.R. Barker | 69 comments I dislike them also, but the ones covered in chocolate I can tolerate. They need to make a snickers bar that won't melt in the heat, then I'd be sorted.

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Yes, there's nothing like a Kendal Mint Cake and a glass of cabbage water...

message 112: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Nah, the chocloate spoils them.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Ignite - prepare to be lynched by legions of chocolate lovers

message 114: by J.R. (new)

J.R. Barker | 69 comments Masses of sugar just makes my teeth ache, the chocolate softens this somehow. Besides it's chocolate and chocolate can do no wrong. Chocolate can go with almost anything, (that's as far as my lynching goes).

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments The most polite and gentle lynching in the history of the internet!

message 116: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments That's the nicest lynching to which I have ever been subjected!

J.R. Barker | 69 comments To corrupt properly you have to use gentle persuasion ;p

Eh that's my problem. plus the chocolate can sometimes upset my stomach.

They do. In Africa and India and other hot climates they add a chemical to the chocolate to make it not melt so easily. Unfortunately the chemical is a laxative.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Uh-oh! The chocolate doesn't run but you do!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments It's not so bad as long as you don't have beer the same day as well....

You've been on this forum for two days? Wow, it's probably time to take a break. Maybe go fix yourself some food or something?

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I think 'Scottish Tablet' would have the same effect,it is made with 2lb sugar,7oz tin condensed milk and tbsp butter.
Certainly not for the diet conscious!

message 128: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments OH yum! I do love Tablet, i think I prefer it to fudge.

message 129: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments This is the first I've ever heard of Scottish Tablet.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Fortunately it needs to be beaten with a wooden spoon for about 15 minutes after taking off the heat, so using up a lot of the calories from eating it!
Friends who moved here from NI were horrified when they heard their small daughter had been offered a "tablet" in the playground - they thought that she had been offered a pill of some kind of drug. She was only 7, and they thought they'd moved somewhere dreadful. Much relief when they found out what tablet means here, despite the fact one of them is a dentist...

message 131: by J.R. (new)

J.R. Barker | 69 comments Must try this tablet thing.

message 132: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I'm rubbish at making Tablet,it only sets 50% of the time!I don't think I have the correct 'wrist action'.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Looking up tablet on my tablet...

message 138: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Mmmm... I might have to try making tablet and just let it go wrong

J.R. Barker | 69 comments Hungry now, shame it's going to be toast and not tablet. Does that sound wrong to anyone else?

Paul Dale (paul_dale) | 47 comments Hi all,

I had no idea there was a Goodreads group for the UK Amazon forum until I came across a chance mention in another group. Reading back a few posts I see a few familiar names already (Ignite, Gingerlilly - hi!)

Any other bike riders here?

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Welcome, Paul!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Hi Paul and welcome! I see you are the author of a book that is on my TBR list, so do please set up your author thread and we can chat about it (eventually...). I also see you are one of the very fine 1965 vintage like myself.

Ah, 1965, a good year if I remember correctly, which of course I do ;) I was going to be nice and lurk a bit before diving straight in on the author thread as it seems so rude, but if Gingerlily has asked then my shame is discounted.

We should drag Nightwing/Davie over as I'm reading his book atm.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Oh yeah - Davie and also Will if they aren't here already.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Hello Paul :o)

What's shame? I don't think there is a lot of it going around in here

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Good point Jud!

Paul Dale (paul_dale) | 47 comments I'm an atheist Catholic Buddhist. You can guess where the guilt comes from ....

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments So you've got a set of guilt-edged baggage there!
