Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments WordWeb is a one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows that can look up words in almost any program. It works offline.

I have found Wordweb to be very helpful. A little icon sits in the tray at the bottom of my screen (along with all the other little icons). (I'm not sure what that tray is called.)

Whenever you need help with a word, you simply click on the icon. You don't have to go online to use it. It's free if you promise not to fly too much, as part of an environmental policy. I know that sounds strange, but that's how it works.

Also, if you highlight a word in the text on your screen and then click on the icon, the word will already be in the wordweb window when you click on the icon.

Try it. You'll like it.

I think it would be great for students.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments This WordWeb reference tool also provides audio pronunciation of many of the words in its database. It's quick and easy because the icon is always in the tray at the bottom of your screen.

The place to click for the audio is represented (inside the WordWeb window) by an icon showing two musical notes.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments That tray at the bottom is your 'start up tray', it holds all the programs that run upon starting your computer and run in the background as long as the computer is on. And it also holds the programs that are open and you are using by choice.
I disabled a lot of unnecessary start up programs from my start up tray, increasing the speed of my computer significantly. For example, it would run iTunes or Lexmark printer. I don't need them to run continually. I only keep the things needed to actually run my computer in start up. Everything can still be accessed when I want them by clicking the icon on the desktop.
If I can move the icon for Wordweb to the desktop, it'll be a useful tool. Thanks.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Yes, I was able to move the icon to desktop and remove from my start up programs.
That's a really great program, Joy. It has everything!

Jackie, having the icon on the desktop requires you to first click on the "show-desktop" icon. So that adds an extra click to the process of accessing WordWeb. I'd rather have the WordWeb icon in my tray so that I can click on it directly and keep my current window open at the same time.

For example, right now, if I wanted to check on the meaning of the word "current" which I just typed in this message, I would highlight the word and then click on the WordWeb icon in my tray. The Wordweb window would open (midsize), showing the meaning, and at the same time I would still be able to view this message I'm typing.

In addition, if I had misspelled the word "current", the WordWeb window would have indicated that as well and would have given me an opportunity to immediately replace it with the correct spelling. So WordWeb is also an immediate spellcheck for the one word in question.

BTW, I'm happy with the speed of my computer at this point, but I will talk to my kids about removing any unnecessary icons in the tray.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I like it superfast. I have RoadRunner Turbo because I don't want to wait a second more than I have to. I want instantaneous results. And I really mean instantaneous, the second I click on something, it appears ready to use.

Once I open wordweb, it's in the tray at the bottom because it's running. I just don't want it as a start up program. Thanks for the tip on highlighting then clicking on the icon. I was doing it according to the direction on wordweb, highlight the word and right click and hit control at the same time. Didn't work every time. Your way is more efficient and worked every single time I tried it.

I really LOVE this program. I tried to get Anthony to install it because he constantly interrupts me to spell words for him or to give meanings. I'm his personal dictionary/thesaurus. But he doesn't want it. Grrr, Men!

I see. Well, as long as it's in your tray after you open it... hmmm ... but doesn't that mean it's a minimized window in your tray, and not the original icon? I wouldn't like it as a minimized window. The icon is smaller and less intrusive. I usually have ENOUGH minimized windows in my tray. LOL

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I'm not sure I know what you mean by 'minimized window'. I have the W icon but small so it fits in the bottom tray and when I click on it, it doesn't give me a full page, but I don't want it that big. I do have the option to make it full page.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's hard to explain, Jackie. No matter. I think we both will get good use out of WordWeb. :)
