Darkly Dreaming Dexter
discussion
Who out there likes Dexter?
Watched the series from the inception but did not read the books until last year. I do not think I have read them all but the contrasts between both are just enough to make each one a unique experience---you'll want to do both. You won't read the books and think "Well the series is now ruined for me", they compliment each other I think.
Can't explain why do I like him,but I do,actually I adore him 'cause he knowns everything about justice, even if don't justify his acts I can tell you he's a BRAIN MAN,and also brave. I've watched his show, and read the book, show is much better, realistic and opsessive (: Freaky s**t!
I LOVE Dexter books & TV though I miss some characters in the TV show. I can't wait to see the latest season (been a bit busy with school to catch up) maybe tomorrow...Dexterthon...
Yet another Evil vs Evil-er I can't imagine it was easy to make so many people route for a serial killer. It's a delicate subject when you are always teetering on the edge of right and wrong. I enjoy the phsychology of these books. Is Dexter going to Hell ABSOLUTELY, does he care or even believe NOPE.
Like the ideas behind the character. But the production values and the acting make the first two years of the TV series much better than the books.
Sometimes feel confused remembering the differences in plotlines between the books and the TV series, but love them both.
Love them both. Kudos to the TV series for the writing, casting and acting. So often TV adaptations (or movie for that matter) of books are a real disappointment. Not Dexter. Oh, and whoever did the opening credits is a genius!

Love this character! My husband and I have just fallen in love with the series. Someone told me about the book and I enjoyed reading it, but putting a face to Dexter's name made it even better! Great reading and TV watching!
the tv show itself is really nice and i like it. but i remember when i read the first book of the series and i was completely disappointed. waste of time for me.
I read the first four books before I started watching the series. Love Jeff Lindsay and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I started watching the series on Netflix and reading the fifth book, but it was too confusing, so I stopped reading. I haven't watched the current season yet, but soon.I plan to finish the fifth book and have already purchased the newest book in the series, "Double Dexter". "Dexter's Debut" is being released sometime this year. I have so many books on my reading list!
For me, this is a case of the series being better than the books. Although I liked the first few books very much. Looks like the 8th season of Dexter starts on June 30th (not October this time). Could be the last season...or the second to last season - I've heard.

The TV series is pretty good too.
TV show is ok, but the book... After the first one I knew I'd not continue.
I have still not read the books but I've been meaning too. I watch the series and its is one of my favourites next to Breaking Bad.Most people think I'm crazy when I say I love Debra. Everyone seems to think so is annoying but she is hilarious. "A baby? A mother-f****** roly-poly, chubby cheeked, shit machine?" Great show!

As for Dexter we like him because he turns what could be considered a character flaw into an asset. Or to put it another way, sometimes good people do bad things to put the universe right.
I love Dexter, I only read one of the books but have watched the entire series to date, pre-ordered season 7. Can't wait. He is the killer you hate to love. What is interesting about this series is how you hear his thoughts. This series is one of the best I have ever seen. Well done, Showtime!
To Dana,It's true what you say about the plots being the same I jokingly say that every third person in Miami is a serial killer. You gotta love it though, Dexter is damaged but there are things he would not do per his code. Like he said in one of the shows "just taking out the garbage"
I enjoy the show but found the first book disappointing. Characters and plotting fell flat for me, especially compared to the TV series (I've watched seasons one through seven). As for Dexter the character--really don't like him in the book, but I have mixed feeling about TV Dexter. He's got good research and detection skills, and there have been times when I've just wished he'd turn over what he's discovered to the police instead of diverting them so that he can kill the killer himself. If only he'd done that with Trinity, (view spoiler).
I discovered the T.V. show before the books and I really like Michael C. Hall as Dexter, They have done well with the Guest Actors as well. Eric King Nailed Doakes.I liked series 1,3,4,5,7.
Bookwise I enjoyed 1,2,4,5 and not 3 or 6.
Read the first book, no interest whatsoever in reading further in the series. As I said in my review, I found it difficult to warm up to a protagonist who's a serial killing sociopath.
I guess it would be a very long list... the question should have been "who doesn't like Dexter?". :-)
Many people like this show, it is well writen, the interpretations are inspired and the characters complex!
I really like the series. Great concept. I deplore the sewer mouth that his sister has. The show definitely has good enough writing, directing, and acting talent that the excessive vulgarity is not needed. I have come to think that in some cases, writers do that because they might fear that the plot or scripts are too thin so they cram the dialog full of vulgarity, perhaps to shock viewers and hope they will talk about the show more. That said I am current except for last season. Can't wait to get that one when it is released, usually August as I recall.
I have never seen the show and stopped reading after the third book. That book was awful and tried to create some kind of supernatural solution for why Dexter is a killer. That did it for me.

I "heard" the first book and thought it was kind of forced. The author kept referring to the phrases "the dark passenger" and "darkly dreaming." None of that really connects me to Dexter as he is portrayed on the show. He has morphed since the first few seasons from a guy who wanted to do what he thought was right to a guy out (sometimes)for vengeance. I still accept him and LOVE the show but it's had a darker feel since the 6-7th seasons. I also think Jennifer Carpenter is an amazing actor. With the show closing down I am excited to see her in something new.
I love the books, love the TV series, and most of all I love Michael C Hall. I love him so much, I've been going to Comic Con San Diego for the last 3 years just to see his handsome face (^_^).
When the first book came out it was almost a new genre - the 'ethical' serial killer and I was hooked. The TV show did a great job of bringing Dexter to life.I second Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) is amazing. Her character should have her own show
Haven't seen the show. Loved the books (Dexter In The Dark not so much as the others). What's fun about Dexter is that, although he's a sociopathic serial killer, he's very likable and sympathetic. Lindsay gets us to see the absurdity of "normal" human behavior through Dexter's eyes, and lets us get a chuckle out of what it means to be human.
