Unfortunately, yes. I witnessed a suicide many years ago (a man jumped off an interstate overpass and was hit by a dump truck). Very gruesome.
I would not be able to see the thestrals.
I have a question about this topic, though--forgive me if Rowling answered it in the books or someone has already addressed it.
Harry could see the Thestrals because he watched Cedric die, correct? Why couldn't he see them before? Voldemort killed Harry's parents right in front of him when he was a toddler. This has always confused me a little.

We won't take offence :) but I like your question and appreciate your thought. Yes I would be able to see Thestrals and seeing as I am a fan of horses (I own some and ride etc.) I don't feel I would be scared of them as some other peopel would, considering they are supposed to be fairly ugly and that. I think that it's more the experience for the person rather and their emotion to it. If you see it on TV, unless you are a particularly emotional person and you knew them personally or something, I don't think it would affect you as much as it would if you were to see it first hand. Therefore, I don't think that watching someone die would give you the ability to see Thestrals.

I think it has something to do with being conscious of what you are witnessing. The one year old Harry may have seen his mothers death but he had no understanding of it where as with Cedric's death understood what he was witnessing and the implications of it.
If animals do count. Yeah. I'll be able to see them. I drowned a few cats and strangled one of our rabbits once.

It's more than mean it's one of the red flags of sociopathy and needs psychiatric attention
Charlene wrote: "If animals do count. Yeah. I'll be able to see them. I drowned a few cats and strangled one of our rabbits once."Thats horrible, why would anyone do that to innocent annimals! and that brings me back to the question- Surely if you killed you wouldn't be able to see the them?

Actually that's an interesting thought that you wouldn't see Thestrals if you were the killer. Technically, you are still seeing something die or be killed, but if you do that you are still in a different frame of mind or emotion than you would be if you were seeing it.. unexpectedly..

I really really hope that your right on both counts (:
As a killer, you would be able to see thestrals. To see them, you must 1 - witness a death as it happens and 2 - understand what you are witnessing. That's why Harry couldn't see them right away; he was too young to understand his Mother's murder.
I would think that if you were witnessing a death right in front of you or if you were witnessing it in real time say over a webcam would make no difference.

I am so sorry; that had to have been very difficult.

I witnessed my father's death when I was very young, so I guees I would definately be able to see Thestrals.
Its a question we should ask JKR if we ever get the chance (:I had no idea so many people have witnessed death

Absolutely! J.K. Rowling would clear it up and it would be a great question :) along with what Dumbledore saw in the Mirror of Erise.
And I had no idea either.

Death happens all the time, it's going to be witnessed often.

The what dumbledore saw one she has answered in an interview someone on here linked, I can't rememeber what topic it was in tho, sorry. Pretty sure she said he saw his family together, brother and sister.

Witnessed often, but not witnessed by many people. First responders and health care providers have much more of a chance of witnessing death than your average office worker, for example, just by the nature of their jobs.
In my life, I have only been witness to death once, and that was my father. Many people in my life have died; I just didn't witness those deaths.
Of course no argument there, in first world countries we all seem to be some what separated from death. I've seen more than my fair share as a registered nurse
i love luna she is one of my fav character. and sadly i would be able to see them. i had to witness the love of my father life pass away in my living room, its sad to think about.
I don't think animals do otherwise they'd all have been able to see thestrals after moody/crouch killed the spider in DADA class
So you have to care for the individual whose death you witnessed or just witness it.So can Voldemeort see thestrals because he witnesses, indeed was the cause of, many deaths without caring for the deceased?
Only as obstacles or means to and end or annoyances I suppose. Not the why someone cares about a pet.
If animals count then I would be able to see them. Evanna Lynch was the perfect Luna!
Where does it say it has to be someone you loved? I mean, Harry didn't exactly love Cedric, he didn't want him to die, but they weren't even really friends. I was thinking it would make more sense if it was that you had to care that they died, unlike Voldemort who didn't care? idk, that's just what I was thinking. I think Harry not being able to see thestrals earlier was just a mistake, because even if he didn't remember at first, he relived it several times in PoA, so he definitely understood. Not to mention that he would've been able to see them at the end of GoF.

That would mean that Bellatrix would be able to see them cause she killed Sirius- among others. And Voldermort would too. That's ridiculus, someone pleaaase tell me they wouldn't be able to see them.
