Do you have to post a task list in advance? I printed out the challege topics and points about a month or so ago and thought that maybe I would just do it on my own for this first time untill I figured out how it goes. I have really been enjoying doing it and am thinking about "officially" participating. The only problem is that I have no idea what books I plan on reading. I like to find books that are interesting and I want to read and then see where they fit in a category. Is that an okay way to do it? Or does it need to be planned out?
I read A Tailor-Made Bride which is about a dressmaker who travels out West to Texas to open a dress shop. I thought it would work for 15.7 Homestead Act, but I wanted to ask and make sure.
Could The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks work for the summer romance since the story commences in the summer? (at least in the movie)
For the "Poisson d'Avril" challenge, would a historical novel about pirates in the Carribean work as a culture other than my own? I don't know if pirates are technically a culture... but they are quite different than my own life :)
Taylor, I am not familiar with the book. Anyone out there read it? Let us know what you think.
Allison, I would think that would work.
Allison, I would think that would work.
For the Out of Bounds task does the book need to have actually been banned or would a challenge be sufficient? I'm thinking of reading Looking for Alaska by John Greene and I know it's been challenged several times but I'm not aware of any actual bans
Can I use for 10-1. (Get Some Direction: Read a book with an absolute (east, west, north, south) or relative (left, right, up, down, etc.) direction in its title) OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF TIME by Ally Carter?
I have a question about audio books. I listen to a ton of audio books because I have a fairly long drive to work and back. I think it's a fun way to find new authors or to read stuff that I normally wouldn't have the patience to sit through. I have not counted any of these for the challenge because for some reason, it sort of feels like cheating to me... But I was curious if anyone else counts audio books and how they feel about whether they are actually "reading" or not since you just listen. I didn't see anything about it in the rules and since this is the first challenge I have participated in, I thought I would ask. Thanks!
I'm sure this has been asked on challenges previous, but for 10.4 (The Long and The Short of It), do the subtitles count in that more than six words criterion? Would The Perfect Storm work for Shark Week being that 99% takes place out in the open water?
Thanks so much!
Allison, I know some people count audio books, so if you want to feel free to (unless the task says they aren't allowed, but I don't think any do this time)
Jessica, I say subtitles would work for the word count and The Perfect Storm works for me too!

I have been so busy getting ready for my time off I have been slacking. I will have the leaderboard updated by tomorrow morning at the latest. :)
I am wondering if I can read The Witches by Roald Dahl for the Now and Then challenge? I am having a hard time finding another book published in my birth year that my library has. It is a children's book and has a few illustrations in it, but it is 208 pages.
First of all, I'm sorry because I feel like I ask a million questions! For task 20.1 I looked on the Master List of Past Group Reads that is under the Past Discussions of Group Reads. I found Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea under April 2011. I am a little over half way through reading it and I thought I would go to find the discussion so I could see what people normally do since I have never posted on a discussion thread. I can't seem to find a discussion thread for it though... What should I do?

I found the post for you, Allison. Here's the link to it:

Just click on Past Discussions of Group Reads to find all the posts on previous group reads. And if there's ever a case that a post doesn't exist for a past group read, I'm sure you can always start one yourself and put it in the Past Discussions thread.
I'm reading The Space Between right now, and I was wondering if I could count it for task 5.4 (flowers). The cover has a wrought iron flower design on it.
For the Take A Trip task (10.8), I am thinking about using The Restaurant at the End of the Universe since the main characters are hitchhiking around the galaxy, which in a way is like being on vacation. Would this book work for that task?
