The bones could have come from anywhere,not necessarily the island he describes. Remember, he is possibly reinventing the story if the second version is true. Perhaps after the human murders and acts of cannibalism he did land on an island with meerkats and ate them.

But yes, some day I will give it a second read. It's been too long since I have read it.
