Shirley (discipleshirley) | 27 comments Hi everyone, I haven't been able to contribute much lately. Has anybody seen the economy take a 'bite' out of thier book addictons?

message 2: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) I've been getting the majority of my books from the library because I couldn't justify buying books. I have bought a few that I found on sale or that I needed to fill in gaps in the series.

Shirley (discipleshirley) | 27 comments Sad, I waited until I was an mt nester to be able to buy books for myself instead of the kids, and the economy bites

Gina (ginrobi) | 137 comments While I'm Canadian, the economy sucks everywhere.

With that said, nope! LOL! I still tuck my $20 aside from my pay every week to get two books all for me, LOL! I don't spend on myself. I buy maybe a couple pairs of jeans every year and a half, and I don't have any other hobbies, so books, books, and more books!

message 5: by Lil (new)

Lil (lilmar) | 22 comments I usually buy from a used book store anyway, so no, it really hasn't taken a bite out. I do buy some authors new, at least until they hit hardback, lol, like J.R. Ward is doing with her next book. I know it's not her decision, but that is probably one I will buy from Amazon used, simply because I can't afford to buy it new and don't want to wait until it comes out in pb.

Lil

Gina (ginrobi) | 137 comments Are you serious? Her new book is going to be HC? Dammit - we've waiting long enough for it, now it's going to be HC to boot? That well and truly sucks! Did she happen to mention if it will take 6 months for it to come out in MMP or if it will take the obligatory year?

message 7: by Lil (new)

Lil (lilmar) | 22 comments I think it will be six months, but don't quote me, lol, I'm not 100% sure.

message 8: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (areadinglady) I've definitely noticed the economy taking a bit of a chunk out of my book purchasing habits. However, I have so many I haven't read yet that I don't let it bother me too much. Also, when I buy books, I never feel guilty! LOL. So while I *am* trying to cut down spending on some things, I will ditch my cable and groceries before I ditch my books. Who was it that said "whenever I get a little money, I buy books. Then, if any is left over, I buy food and clothes." Yeah, that's me. :)

message 9: by Lil (new)

Lil (lilmar) | 22 comments Me, too, lol!

message 10: by Malena (new)

Malena (badgalmalmal) I usually get my books from the library. I buy books on sale or when I get a Borders voucher. I'm running out of room on my bookshelf.

message 11: by Shirley (new)

Shirley (discipleshirley) | 27 comments Maybe I should get more book shelves to look empty and I will feel the need to fill them?

Karen (karen_anders) | 4 comments Sidhe1 - Just the way I feel. Can I quote you on my website? Best, Karen

LOL! Sure, quote away if you want. The quote about buying books before food, though, isn't mine. I want to say it's someone like Erasmus, but I'm not sure. :) I could stop being lazy and actually try to look it up...

message 15: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 137 comments LOL, I like the way you think too, Shirley!

I haven't lived at home since '96, but my Dad is still bugging me about the amount of books I buy, LOL! To me, my books are my obsession, and the only cure for it is if I'm flat broke, LOL!

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments Gina, you've come to the right place! Welcome home!

Sidhe1, yep, that's Erasmus. One of my favorite quotes, too!

message 18: by Zen (new)

Zen (zentea) | 5 comments AAAAHHH! My favorite used bookstore is GONE! DISAPPEARED! Now I only have the library to count on.... (they have a really good ILL system) Sigh.. Stupid economy. I need to buy me a yak.

message 19: by Shirley (new)

Shirley (discipleshirley) | 27 comments Thank you guys. Great minds think alike. If you had to give all your books except the bible and one other away what would be the one you keep?

message 20: by Jennifer (last edited Dec 18, 2008 05:57AM) (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments Ouch! That's a painful question Shirley! I don't know that I could pick just one. I'm like a dragon; my books are my treasure, and I horde them greedily!

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Yeah it was hurting my pockets until my friend got me an e-book reader now not so much since most of the books are very cheap .

message 22: by Shirley (new)

Shirley (discipleshirley) | 27 comments I don't know as I could answer that one..........unless I could combine several into one big volume...........

message 23: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 137 comments I'd refuse ... adamantly. I have over 800 books in my house, and I'll never give them up. I'm not a selfish person; I share everything, but my books are mine! MINE! LOL! I may lend them to my best friend, but I get them back. Otherwise, hands off my books!
