I remember writing this, but I don't know why I did. Anyway, here it is. I hope it's at least kind of interesting, since it's not my best work :)
Nephew of Hades, always cloaked in darkness, constantly over looked and just as often feared; this is Eclipse. He is the shadow that follows each person. While we are bathed in light, he is the one trailing us, matching us step for step. Eclipse is the dark, even in the brightest person. Unknown, never heard, always slinking around corners- this is his existence. Eclipse was here in the time of Adam and Eve. When the first bite of forbidden fruit was eaten, he came, unbidden, to trail humanity. He mimics us, mocks us. Every move we make he imitates with exact timing. He is the only god accepted by Hades, for Hades has the Helm of Darkness and can move much as Eclipse can. Like Hades, Eclipse is not allowed to live on Mt. Olympus. His past has assured him this.
When people became the masses on Earth- once only two, now outnumbering the gods themselves- Eclipse followed them all, gradually darkening as the evil grew more obvious. People took Eclipse in stride, but the gods were not so quick to accept his presence. He was called up to Olympus, where he laughed when he was told to stop.
“What can I do,” he asked “to make the people good? I am not the cause of the evil, only the one showing it.”
Zeus alone knew what the shadow could be used for. Hades was his brother after all, and he was the Lord of the Gods. So, he upset with Eclipse’s evaluation of his power. All attempts to dissuade Eclipse, however, failed. The shadow god smirked each time a god glowered at his stubbornness, or a goddess shook her head at his unwillingness to see. There was nothing to do but to give the young god a final warning and to send him from Olympus. Melting into a shadow, Eclipse was able to back from the room with no one to see where he left. On earth he slid from and became each person’s shadow. He darkened them when he saw true evil in their thoughts, and reluctantly lightened some, when only the barest hint of wickedness was found.
Eclipse went where he wanted and did as he pleased with no recognition of another authority, until a sudden jolt pulled him from the shadow of a benign mind. It was a compelling tug he knew couldn’t be ignored. Eclipse was unable to change from his form as a shadow as he glided through the streets, unseen because he wanted to be. He was being pulled to the darkest presence he had ever felt; he couldn’t stay away. Anticipation grew in him as he slunk through crowds.
Zeus watched from the sky and sighed sadly as the shadow god quivered with expectation. The pull led him to a fault line, where he slid into the waiting recess.
Hades awaited him, ever vigilant as the boy slithered past Cerberus without him turning a head. Eclipse stopped just short of the palace of Hades, and the King of the Underworld came out to meet him gladly.
Able to sense the thoughts of people and arrange their shadow accordingly, Hades explained that Eclipse could also pull the worst thoughts of the mind to the front and make them evident. He explained how it was possible that Eclipse could control the worst actions of mortals. Together the two journeyed to the surface and the theory, to Eclipse’s delight, was proven true.
Mourning the loss of the young god, Zeus banished him from the peak of Olympus. Eclipse now dwells in the underworld, happily making us sin, and our shadows are forever the deep black he loves so well.
