I loved this book. Just loved it. So I don't see how anyone could dislike it.

that is like saying soccer is game game where you kick a ball, what fun is there is that? some kid named artemis? he is a child genius, far smarter then most adults and is only 12?!??! searching for something stupid... did you only read the first chapter? how is fairys, thousands of years ahead technologically, stupid? the only thing that is stupid, my friend, is you. have a nice life.

listened is the key word here. dont listen, read. its much better, you will see what i mean.

(Again no offense.)Fourth I hope you read this nya and reply to this message.

From what I remember, (and I didn't finish the first one because I thought it was boring)he actually seemed very arrogant to me; which is part of the reason why I stopped reading because when I don't like the main character, I find it hard to focus on the rest of the book. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Still, I could appreciate what the author was trying to create, and the creativity thrown into it.
I did like Artemis though, I enjoy the arrogant, genius characters as the protagonists. Why? Because it's fun seeing everything from their eyes and watching them slowly change into a better person. Plus, their antics are amusing.

I guess someday I'll suffer through it! :)

Artemis was meant to be arrogant :D it's his journey from arrogance to a decent kid that makes this a great series for me. Think of it like Draco Malfoy into Harry Potter.

Well if he is as misunderstood as Malfoy was then I guess I'll like it a lot! I love misunderstood characters!

I liked the fact that they switch points of view because than you can see more of the story and charcters. To Holly, Artemis was absolutely evil but when you switch views you can see how conflicted Artemis is about his crime. This book was the start of their friendship which will later save the world. But when I was younger I teneded to hate books that switched views. Think of it like watching Flashpoint or another TV show where they do the same thing :D

Personally, I didn't care for this book, even though I was trying to read the GN version, and could not read the rest of it. I did not like Artemis, as he seemed arrogant and stuck-up. But, I understand that younger readers may enjoy it.
As for the person saying people are comparing this to LOTR, I don't see how. But, as for the age they set on things, I don't see that, either. I read alot of books that were above my level, when younger, such as reading the LOTR set as a 9-yr.-old 4th-grader. And, I do, sometimes, now read books below my level now that I am older.
In short, there's no reason for all the complaining in this thread. If everyone complains at the OP, she'll complain at them, too. And, sadly, AF lovers, there are actually a lot of us that did not like this book....That is NOT a diss of those y'all that liked it.

Lol that's okay when I was younger I hated the Hobbit with a passion as I found it really boring. Now I like it a lot but I find I still have to struggle through it. Same with LoTR but I agree with you not everyone likes this book, not everyone likes Harry Potter either even when it was extremely popular :D but that is why there are many different books to choose from because if we were all the same life would be boring :D

It's a good book I guess but it's not really my taste at all. Artemis Fowl is kinda clever in a less murderous "Dr. Fu Manchu" way. But If you ask me Artemis was a pompous, spoiled, rich 12yr. old brat who was rewarded for kidnapping and mentally tormenting a (at the time) defenseless female for his own selfish gain. I understood he was a criminal but with 8 books I thought maybe there is something about Artemis that makes you wanna root for him. But honestly after 1 book I just can't I'm sorry...I feel he should have been an antagonist "The Villian" then I'd fell more comfortable saying he's a criminal but has some depth & humanity. All he did all book was talk intelligently malevolent behind his "Butler" who aside from being caught off guard once or twice is basically invincible (no character growth for invincibility and probably why I didn't like his character at all). If Artemis' plan had of ultimately failed in the end and Artemis learned something then I'd have reason to keep reading. Maybe, learning some humility or at the very least learn that possibly causing a WAR between two species of beings that would wipe out both just for his greed was something he shouldn't do. And please don't respond saying he does in later books because that's oxymoronic when the first book gave no lead into that. That would be a bigger problem like "why is this a series" if the books don't lead to each other in the over-arcing plot. It's an good read but I'd rather read something else that has a lead character I can get behind. I spent most of the book looking for reasons to like Artemis and ended being completely unsatisfied. A protaganist being rewarded for horrible actions as a human being in any way with no consequences to them.. I'll Pass

You would like the book where Holly slugs him than :D Honestly everything he did in the first book was to get his Mom out of her Craziness and to find his Dad. If it helps any new readers he does become less Moriarty and more Sherlock Holmes. I like the journey and I love how he stops being a criminal and starts turning his life around all because he met Holly, Foaly and Captain Root. But if people only read the first book they are missing out on that. By the way SPOILER*********************************************
In the Time Paradox we learn that he had to kidnap Holly because he met his older self and learned that he could love, and that he would save LEP with Holly a few times over. Not to mention saving the cute demon warlock No.1 (very smart critter who looks scary but is very nice like Guiomon in Digimon Tamers.)and now I shall leave this page and go back to reading my Dresden Files :D
