SOLVED! THANKS! I think this was a YA book I read a few years ago. It's about a young girl and her younger brother who have a down-to-earth mom and an artist dad. On a drive, the parents are arguing and the car starts to swerve. Just before it crashes, mom jumps into the back seat and covers the kids with her body. Dad dies and mom is in a coma. The kids have to go to live with their dad's mom in the Appalachian Mountains where the have to do many chores and there isn't much money. In the end, the girl learns to love her grandma and her new life. The grandma dies and at the same moment, their mom wakes from the coma.

It's not a YA book. I think this is probably "Wish You Well" by David Baldacci.
