Once a little boy came up to me in the children's department and told me "Excuse me, but my brother just peed on the floor." I thanked him for letting me know. The female guardian (mother?) had decided that it wasn't her job to tell me her charge had urinated on the children's department floor in a bookstore; a 6-year-old child however had the intelligence and decency to let me know. (I however did not have to clean it up; for some reason another worker did it, and wasn't too upset, apparently it has happened before.)

omg that is nasty!!! I guess I can never complain on being in the fitting room again until someone craps in a stall lol...i cannot believe someone would do that!!!

Yep... the worst thing is, it happened one more time after that, and we had people piss in the stalls too. Needless to say after working there I became a HUGE germaphobe.
OH MY EFFFING GOD!!!!!!!!! That is seriously messed up!! Sorry, but that would be a deal breaker for me (I'm already a germaphobe)...even if I liked my boss, I'd have to tell him or her they were SOL on that one! I'm so sorry you were the one that had to discover it. By the way...I'm exercising so much restraint here, because that story inspires so many sick jokes!!!!!
Haha! Tell me about it! I had three managers and the one working that night was a complete asshole, so it was a good time indeed. I have no idea why I stayed at that job for a year and a half!
When I worked retail we had a "lady" (just to say she was female, she definitely was not a lady) that would come in with her three children. I would guess their ages around 9-14. The oldest had several disabilities, though I am not sure what exactly the cause was, looking at the mother I always assumed drugs. Anyways, she would always buy the other two kids and herself treats but nothing for the handicapped child.
That wasn't the worse. One day that child had an accident in the aisle and when I told her it was okay that I would get a mop and bucket, and told her mother where the restrooms were to get her child cleaned up a bit, she said "She will have to deal with being embarassed or else she won't stop doing it." I about died. She is handicapped and probably has little if any control over things like that.

omg that makes me soo mad. After working with an autistic child for 6 years who had accidents on many occasions..I am horrified that a mother would feel that way towards their own child.
I hope karma caught her too. It was a while ago. I don't really remember who called, but someone had called the Child Services and they came into my work and asked about the treatment of the girl. They interviewed about 5 of us, so I am guessing it was one of us who called, and they never came back to let any of us know the outcome. I also don't remember if they ever came in again after that.
I work full time in a middle school library and then part time at night in my community college library. I'm only taking 2 classes this semester.. and they should be the last for this certificate. Then I'll start looking into Masters programs for a year or two in the future.
So I haven't been too active here lately because I took a new job last month. I had wrote about it on here because I wasn't sure I was going to take it, but I did and here I am. So I'm now working as the assistant agent at a booking agency. At first I didn't really like it because everyone was too busy to train me so I was sooo bored all the time. Now that I'm pretty busy, it's actually enjoyable most days. I talk to some rude & insane people sometimes, but I've gotten some good laughs out of it.

congrats on the job! I'm glad that it's not as boring anymore as in the beginning. It's always hard to figure out whether or not you enjoy a job in the beginning.

my jobs have never been too out of the ordinary, I worked as the work coordinator's assistant (basically a secretary) at my last school for 3 years, and went through two work coordinator's. I had to help train the second since they just thrust him into the position, and I remember towards the beginning of his working in the position, he just got up, closed the door to our office, went back to his desk, and started crying. I didn't really know what to do and he didn't try to hide it or anything, I felt bad, but he eventually got used to the job he was forced into.other than that, I have worked in a tomato factory (be sure to ALWAYS wash your vegetables *shudder*), babysat 5+ kids at a time (ranging from infant to 9), I am currently a medical assistant at a doctor's office on school breaks and summer (i do exciting tests on pee and am an expert blood pressure taker), and Now I work in my school's human development department as the assistant to the assistant of the Human Development chairperson. ie i am the secretary of the secretary of the big boss man.
i've been loving all these stories, though! they are positively hilarious!
I work at B&N and a few days back, I was helping this cute old lady find a book. So I found her book for her, and she said, "Oh, you're such a lover!", which I thought was the cutest thing ever. Haha. Then there was this old man that I pretty much went out of my way to help with all the things he needed (he had this list of books that were out of print, so I went onto our website and ordered some used copies for him). So we were chatting and when we were finished, he asked me if he could take me home with him (which is usually what I get from really creepy old men), but he absolutely didn't mean it sexually; he literally just thought I was really helpful to have around, which was really cute. Anyway, so I finished up with him and I was helping the next customer and he said, "If anybody can help you, she can. There is nothing that she doesn't know!" And little things like that always make my day. =)
Awww, I love that stuff, too... ewww, creepy old men.I love when people actually appreciate what you do, instead of just expecting it and taking it for granted.
That's so awesome! I get that feeling when I talk about books with my 5th and 6th graders. I love when they come up to me and ask me to recommend a book. I've been doing talks the last two days to our special services kids about the graphic novels we just bought and they love them! I just eat up graphic novels and I'm glad my kids do too!
I work in a middle school library as an aide right now. :) But I have a teaching degree and am looking for a full librarian job for next year. Love the library.
Thats great Kristen, I'm thinking about looking into volunteering at a local library or something next fall and perhaps getting my MLS. I feel so undecided when I talk/think about future plans but I think I would enjoy working at a library.
Kristen, I think that's what I want to do! Do you love it? I really hope I can be a children's librarian someday.
I do love it. If I could somehow keep kids in the library all day, I would be happy as can be. I love helping interacting with them! It keeps me going through the menial part of my job - like barcoding billions of books.
A customer came in today and said he appreciated that me and the girl I was working with always are smiling and cheerful even though he knows we work as hard if not harder than the other 2 workers who are always grumpy. I've been putting up with a lot of crap from my grumpy co-worker so it was really nice to be complimented.
so fun work story: Last night these 2 guys (in their mid-late 30's I'd guess) come in and bought some beer then got $50 worth of quarters, dimes, and nickels explaining that they were going to teach their sons to play poker. This morning a group of boys between the ages of probably 10 and 13 come in and buy $23.35 worth of candy and other junk food and pay with all change. So obviously I ask them if they learned to play poker last night and the youngest explained this his older brother and cousin already knew how to play but him and his other brother and cousin didn't but it didn't matter because they were quick learners and beat their dads so bad. It was great, reminded me of why I love living in a small town.
Aww I love living in a small town too. That's a cute story. =)So I had these two girls come into my store (B&N) and ask our children's person for racist children's books. She was completely baffled so she asked me for help. I was just thinking What?! and couldn't think of anything, so I asked them why they needed racist books. It turned out that they were in a Children's Lit class and were examining race in children's books. Haha, but it was one of the most awkward questions I've ever had. I told them that we wouldn't carry books that were blatantly racist and that racist kid's books were probably out of print, so I'd look online...
I work at a publice library, and the things that happen there. I have been there for 9 years. Here are things that happen at the library:
Items foud in returned books-
~TP is the most common along with sticky notes. We loath when people leave the frikken sticky notes in the books the return.
~Hair ties with hair still attached to them.
~Sucker sticks
~Bills and checks
~Used condoms, yes this did happen. We didnt even bother with the book we just withdrew it and threw it away.
People ask us how to return books all the time. I am like are you serious you cant figure out how to put a book through a hole.
I had a creepy man tell me he would give me free tennis lessons if I show him how to use the computer. Yeah we had a police walk through after that one.
We have restroom issues all the time also.
Ther eare loads of things that happen at the library. But the things that gets me the most is the lack of discipline parents use. Children throw fits and scream all the time, ruun and heelie around and their parents do nothing about it.
Okay I am done for now.
NYU Bookstore. I worked at a Staples in SoHo (New York City) and that was certainly my fair share of retail hell. the bookstore generally has better customers compared to that Staples, but I generally steer clear of the soccer moms who can't accept their children going off to college. You can easily tell who never worked a wage job in their lives.
Some random guy asked if I wanted to go kayaking with him at work the other day. I guess Maxim had an article on asking women out and one of the tips was to ask us to do sports. I do not want to go kayaking with a stranger; that is dumb! How would I know if he was any good at it? He could drown me for all I know.

Unless you are the type of women who really trust people.
I would have to know the guy before saying yes, I have to trust someone when both lives are at risk with outdoor activities.
I think it was our third date and several nights talking on the phone before I went hiking with my now fiancee.
I started working at the CDC (Center for Diease Control) on May 26th and I'll be working till July 31st (because I start fall semester beginning of August). Only a few complaints and those pertain to boredom really, which can't be fixed. The pay is amazing though. I work in the lab that deals with RSV which is a respritory virus and a small section of our lab works with SARS as well. So in theory it's interesting, the problem is my heart has never really been in the biology field so I find my self really restless at work.
Since there are a ton of new members I thought I'd bring this thread up again.
Where do you work? Do you love/hate your job?

I'm a TA for the essential computer skills class that's required at my college. It's not a bad job - TAs get paid the highest of any student worker, so the money is nice and the work is pretty minimal.
I always get at least one email from a student at the beginning of the semester (this is my 5th semester to do this) who asks if the grades I give "really count". Seriously?! Why would I spend my time grading assignments if they don't count?
I work for my university in the research department managing technology and doing web programming/design. Essentially, I install printer cartridges for the office workers who refuse to, fix and build websites, and remind them that the monitor has to be on before they can expect to see anything on the screen.Independently I do freelance photography, web/print design, and on-call tech support.
Drew wrote: "I work for my university in the research department managing technology and doing web programming/design. I do research in a psych lab on campus and my prof asked me to install a new computer mouse last week because she didn't know how to do it. It took me longer to get it out of the plastic package then it did to plug it in and have Windows automatically install it.
It seems as though alot of people here work for their university in some way. I wish I would have tried to get a student job when I was on campus. It would have been nice to work in admissions or something.
I work in admissions as a student ambassador. I give tours to prospective students and such.I also tutor for Student Support Services. I started last year and am continuing.
I am now a substitute teacher at 2 different districts when I am not student teaching. It's great pay, just very competitive!
im 80,000 dollars in debt from college (i just graduated in may) and i am a receptionist and work on a veggie farm to try and make ends meet. i had to move back in with my mum and its NOT where i wanted to be after graduation. lol. and my student loans havent even kicked in yet. im scared to see that monthly bill. let me just go back to college.... :)
Keara, I just figured out what my monthly bill is going to be... not too pretty. It's going to be around $550 a month I think. Sad. (I'm also living at home which is not working out to well for my social life haha.)
Wow, Keara! Good luck. That sounds tough! I was fortunate enough to maintain my scholarship, in addition to working 20 hours per week in the university bookstore and then library to pay for my degree and living expenses, so I managed to finish my bachelors and masters degrees without going into debt. Of course, I did live at my parents house until I was a senior, so my social life suffered, even though my grades didn't. When I finished my undergrad (two years ago), I was offered a staff position in the university library I worked in and I'm now fulltime and just finished my MLS, so working at your university as a student employee can pay off. :)
Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I never thought I'd end up living in Provo after graduation. :P
Another good one to bring back up...
I am currently working for Modernism Magazine & Style 1900 magazine as the marketing assistant/intern. I love it so far!

I work for my university's Annual Fund, so I call up alumni, talk to them, and ask them for money. It's a pretty decent job, and we get some funny stories out of it...a week or two ago, I called a guy who asked me what I was wearing, which was a bit creepy. And then he didn't even give any money. :(Just this past week I also got hired to train as a tutor for our Writing Walk-In service, so now I technically have two jobs. I'm kind of glad about that, even though I won't have any free time anymore, because I feel a bit less pressure to get a paid job over the summer, so I can look into internships. Also, I'm hoping to be a book editor, so helping people with their writing is basically my perfect job.
I work at an animal hospital. We mostly get dogs and cats, but they have had the occasional rat or hamster. It's kind of a sad job, because you see a lot of hurt animals, but it's only temporary. I'm training to be a vet tech in general practice, so I volunteer every sunday to help with the animals. I really enjoy it, because there are (believe it or not) a lot of perks. Most of the time my day consists of playing with the ones that can go outside, which is a lot of fun! I love animals so much, so to be around them all day and help them get better is just amazing!!
Found an ad for "Spectrum Schools". They work with special needs children. Their main office is in San Pablo but they collaborate with different schools all over the bay area. Anyways, they are looking for an assistant and I emailed them. I'm hoping, praying, crossing my fingers that the will hire me. If I get a job with them it will be awesome. It will be a step towards my goal of becoming a teacher.
