Just tried Divergent.

I liked the first 70 to 80% of it but thought the story (and the writing) degraded toward the end. Not that it wasn't action filled, but that the action and the characters didn't make a lot of sense to me. It seemed to be trying to be a romance and yet a struggling, confused hero book.

Tris sometimes seemed to get what was happening but then she'd do a "Threes Company" blink, confusing the actions and demeanor of four and then react (or act) irrationally. Maybe it has something to do with being 16. Anyway, I though the dialog—which up till then was okay—became rather stilted and the story suddenly moved toward a crisis and then resolved itself strangely.

As an example of inconsistency: The wounded Tris apparently lost a lot of blood and then it was as though nothing happened and she was jumping on and off trains. Before this (the first 70% of the book) pretty much made sense. Maybe the author got tired and wanted to wrap things up quickly.

Just an opinion. I'm sure others had a different reaction. Up till the end I'd planned to read the series, but now I'm not so sure I want to.

It was quite the page turner and I was going to give it 5 stars, but I had a problem with one character, Amin's, development. He's a nice guy that does one inexcusable thing that just seemed very out of character to me, so I knocked it down to 4.
