Dianne Ascroft | 5 comments I think book covers have a great influence on readers. I know I've been drawn to some books by the covers. For my first novel I took photos of a house and a boy that were relevant to the story and had an artist create a cover using the images. I think what he produced for Hitler and Mars Bars gives the potential reader a good idea of what to expect inside the cover.

I'm about to release a collection of short stories and again I've chosen images that relate to a couple of the stories in the book and asked a cover designer to put together a cover from them. I really like the cover so I hope readers will also be drawn to it.

I'm a firm believer in making sure you have the best cover you can get. By the way, I've only recently joined this group - so, hi everyone! I just saw this topic and had to join in as book covers have occupied my thoughts recently - I just posted an image of my latest book cover to Facebook last night, actually.

Hi and welcome Dianne. I totally agree about being drawn to book covers.
I asked a few of my readers for their thoughts. They gave me great insights about what what lingered with them after reading the novel.
I also follow Joel Freidlander at the BookDesigner site and have learned a bunch about ebook covers and what does and does not work when you look at miniture covers online.

message 158: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Ascroft | 5 comments Yes, Carol, that was something new to me when I started work on my first ebook recently. I was used to working with a print size cover so had to re-think what works for a miniature version that will be viewed online. You don't want it too cluttered - simply is the goal.

I so agree, I put a house we had lived in and dearly loved on my cover, and as it was an old photo it turned out to look quite atmospheric. The house also featured in the book. If I see a book cover with naked people on it,I'm afraid I don't even bother to look!

message 161: by Ramona (new)

Ramona (ramonaflightner) Hi everyone! I think covers are important because they will spark my curiosity to pick up the book. However, that only gets me to the point of reading some of the book. If the writing isn't there, I will put the book back down again. So, I guess a cover is part of the battle, but I have never bought a book due to it's cover. :-)

Peggy Strack (peggymorehouse) | 96 comments Enjoyed your posts Carol and Ramona. I agree with Ramona. The cover is important but the writing and story has to darw me in.

message 165: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Ascroft | 5 comments I would agree with Ramona. I wouldn't read a book if I didn't like the writing style or didn't think it was well written. But a striking cover might make me pick up a book and read the back blurb - and I might have completely overlooked that book without something about the cover that attracts me. Same goes for ebooks - I might read a blurb because the cover intrigues me. Then I'll decide whether I want to read the book.

Dropping by to share Six Sentence Sunday blog post #17 of my current wip, A Heart Not Easily Broken. Not many of these left to post! Enjoy and look forward to any comments! Have a great Sunday!

#Six Sentence Sunday #17- A Heart Not Easily Broken

“What about her?”

Those were the words spoken by Ebony last week in her attempt to get Brian to move on. Unable to ignore her obvious attraction to the last man she expected to meet, she goes by instinct. Up until this point in her life, Ebony, a black woman, has never experienced the obvious attention Brian, a white man, is heaping upon her.

#Six Sentence Sunday #18- A Heart Not Easily Broken

Welcome back!

So, Brian has just told Ebony, in so many words, he's not interested in talking to anyone but her. Ebony's response is to laugh and admit that despite all the men who shown her attention since being at the club did it from a distance. Not Brian. After spying her from the stage, he boldly walks over, buys her a drink, and is not thrown off his game by the way she responds.

What does that mean? Are they a small traditional Pub, self-pub? What services do they provide?

Hi Carol,

Createspace (Amazon) designed the cover. I chose Createspace primarily because of their print on demand costs. I can keep the price of the novel resonable, and still make a little profit (approx. $4.00 a book if I price it at $13.95 for a 93,000 word book). I will also make 70% of Kindle downloads if I price it at $2.99. This far better than the other self-publishers I considered. After all, I'm a new author and I want people to give "A Stop in the Park" a try. If priced too high, people might not take the risk.

I'm going over the proof copy for the second time. What a job!!!! Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy to share. ~ Peggy

Hi, i agree about proofing. I hired an editor and labored page by page on her line edits. It surprised me how time consuming and tedious it was. Does creatspace edit or proofread or just go with what you give them? Do they pick interior fonts and do the inside book layout design? thanks carol

Createspace edits for a fee. I used them along with a private editor I really trust. Editing was what I spent the most on, but thought it was so important. The editor from Createspace did a wonderful job, really knew the Chicago Style Manual inside and out. I was also pleased with the cover design and interior font choice, etc. One warning about the formatting of the interior--lots of mistatkes. About 50 altogether that I was not responsible for. You just really have to review it, and they do correct quickly without extra costs.

message 186: by Carol (new)

Carol Brill (goodreadscomuser_carolbrill) Yikes, 50 interior errors seems like a lot. What kind of errors?
thanks for sharing and for your patience with my questions, Peggy.
after Create Space edits, if you also decide to publish on various e-pubs, do they provide an electronic editted copy ?

Hi Heather, I checked out your blog and really related to the question "what is your writing space like?
Over the years, I have written at the kitchen table, a too narrow ladies' desk, a too small child's desk, and a cheap "some assemby required" desk. Finally, a few years ago, my husband convinced me I deserved a "real" writing space. We splurged for real wood furniture, and created a great writing nook in a corner of our sun room--looking out over our garden. I even have matching file cabinets!

Peggy Strack (peggymorehouse) | 96 comments Hi Carol ~ One biggie was all of the spaces between scene and POV changes were deleted. I had to go back and re-format--what a tedious pain when I had it correct in the first place. Others that didn't occur often included one long space between words, and dialouge that wasn't paragraphed (only two occasions). I wonder if other self-publishing companies make the same kinds of errors.
That being said, I did make the corrections. I'm waiting for my second round of changes before it goes out for reviews. One big plus with Createspace continues to be the royalties. I can price my novel reasonablly which should help with sales.
Createspcae does give you an electronic copy of the finished product for e-publishing on other sites.
