And, congrats and success on your Kirkus book review. carol

Hi Jasmine - loved the podcast. Fun to hear your "real" voice. Read Before the Crash this week and enjoyed getting to know Melissa a bit, too. carol

Great opening!
I'm still going through the above blogs--they are great so far and give me lots of ideas. I wanted to share mine as well. My novel is based on a family's collection of discarded buttons and the stories they tell, the idea being that little things can give meaning to the story of our life. On my blog I have a monthly interactive reader feature called Flash Fiction, Button Style. Readers send in an image of a button and I write its story in 250 words in one hour. They are fun because I try out different styles and genres. This week I did a romance. Here's a link: http://elizabethjennings.com/2013/05/...

I have taught creative writing classes and a tin of buttons is one of my favourite aids to writing. I'm always amazed at what people come up with. Such a great way into a story or poem. I will try and get to read your romance later.
Dale wrote: "Elizabeth wrote: "I'm still going through the above blogs--they are great so far and give me lots of ideas. I wanted to share mine as well. My novel is based on a family's collection of discarded..."Cool! I've done that with a class when I was a guest speaker. I'm thinking of teaching a continuing ed class this fall and using it, too.
I haven't taught any classes for a while now. Not sure why. Just always seems too much else to do. I used to enjoy it though and learn a lot myself and get ideas as I taught others.
I know this isn't a blog, but this came up on Facebook today, posted by writer Cheryl Strayed:"Going through a drawer I found the submissions/applications log I've kept off and on over the years. Just in case you think it's all been roses I'd like to report that Yaddo rejected me (as recently as 2011). McDowell rejected me. Hedgebrook rejected me twice. The Georgia Review rejected me and Ploughshares rejected me and Tin House rejected me, as did about twenty other journals and magazines. Both The Sun and The Missouri Review rejected me before I appeared in their pages. Literary Arts declined to give me a fellowship three times before I won one. I've applied for an NEA five times and it's always been a no. Harper's magazine never even bothered to reply. I say it all the time but I'll say it again: keep on writing. Never give up. Rejection is part of a writer's life. Then, now, always."
Happy writing, ladies.
Jasmine, during Book Talks for my recently published novel PEACE BY PIECE, I've gotten some gasps and laughs sharing some of my "favorite" rejections(is favoirite rejections an oxymoron?) Rejections sting, but they have also helped me grow and bolstered my resolve to try harder. thanks for sharing. carol

It's like Randy Pausch said, Walls are there to stop people who don't want it as badly as you.
Don't stop writing, and you'll get there!

congratulations Laura. I love that you counted all 413! I know I'm in the hundreds somewhere, but never counted them up. carol

Wait til you sell to count them - too depressing, otherwise!
Curious all, what do you count as a rejection? My definition is, if I send anything out, just a query letter, q/sun., a partial, or full MS, and don't get an acceptance/offer, it's a rejection.
Thoughts?
Not sure Carol. But I love that Cheryl Strayed shared her experience. You can see from the Facebook comments that it meant so much to so many.
I'm back after some minor surgery and feeling great. Looking forward to catching up with everyone's news. If you haven't heard, Stephen King is releasing his new novel, "Joyland" in print only as a way to support independent bookstores. Good for him! Hi, Ladies!!!!It's been a while since I stopped by and for that I apologize. The good thing (I think) is that my oldest has now graduated from high school and has completed his college enrollment, and my other kids are out for the summer. That's a good thing...I think...lol!
I wanted to share my latest blog post with you guys and hope you find the information useful! Have a great writing week!
You see this everyday online, in magazines, and on billboards. But have you ever wondered....
