(I'm a sucker for anything contemporary). Give me an engaging plot, some beautifully executed characters, a cup of hot coffee and I am officially the happiest person on earth. I'm hoping that groups like these will give me wonderful recommendations on the best YA books out there. Some of my favorite books are Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King, Looking For Alaska by John Green and Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. (Oh, I'm also a sucker for real intense books. Throw in a little suspense and I'm hooked.)

message 3718: by Christopher (last edited Feb 19, 2015 01:55AM) (new)

Christopher Hegan | 2 comments Hi everybody. My name is Christopher Hegan, and raising three kids made me such a fan of YA and children's books that I ended up writing one. We loved Caroline Lawrence's Flavia Gemini series, The Borrowers and of course Louis Sachar's utterly wonderful Holes. And Harry Potter, natch. My youngest daughter, now studying theoretical physics and maths at Uni, could still win Mastermind on the subject of Harry Potter. On journeys we used to challenge each other with HP trivia; the hours just flew by. Audio books: yes! I'll record mine once it has some traction. i.e. readers.
I wrote my book, The Musket Girl, for my twelve-year old, although I didn't get to start for two years and now it's finished she's a young adult. I describe it as fantasy that isn't, because its setting is so unreal it could almost be a fantasy world. New Zealand, my home country, was a very strange place. Because it broke away from the proto-continent of Gondwanaland before the evolution of mammals, it was a kingdom of birds. Lots of ground-dwellers filling roles filled by rabbits, badgers, etc. in the rest of the world. The Maori people are equally fascinating. The had 3D tattoos, carved in their faces with chisels. Tough customers, and a wonderful race. This is the world of The Musket Girl, where Winnie Meldon, her Maori friend Rawiri and their talking tui bird Kura set off to rescue Rawiri's mother Moe from slavers.
Just to get it out there, I'd be happy to give anyone an e-copy. Just message me here.

message 3727: by Dorreh (new)

Dorreh New addition to my reading list then!

message 3728: by Deniz (new)

Deniz | 12 comments I think that aspect of it was preventing me from reading it since I'm not too big of a fan but if it made you get into it then maybe it'll do the same for me!

message 3729: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin V (books_and_boba) Dorreh- yay!

Deniz- yes! I always say to people who don't like to read "you just haven't read the right book yet" haha I tried and tried to read historical fiction and never liked it until the Outlander series!

message 3730: by Deniz (new)

Deniz | 12 comments I guess I'm also going to read outlander next lol! I haven't yet found a 'historical' book I enjoy. I think I may be one of the few that didn't like game of thrones.

message 3731: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin V (books_and_boba) I haven't tried GoT yet, but a friend of mine loves it. He's really obsessed XD I haven't read the books or seen the movies. The thing with the Outlander series is that there's A LOT of pages and it takes a while to read so I tend to read books in between each of the books or switch to another book in the middle of reading, not because it's a bad book (it's so amazing to me, I'm obsessed) but because it's just a lot for me and I need to get ready for all the feels coming my way XD haha so if you find yourself doing that, you're not alone :)

message 3732: by Jen (new)

Jen Smith (pageturnersmith) | 2 comments I forgot to introduce myself! Hey im Jen a serious book fanatic as im sure all of us are lol Just recently got married so been adjusting to that for the past few months but im really wanting to get back into reading and checking out of reality every now and then. Young adult is my fave even though im far from the age bracket. Im actually really excited for the new book Haunting of Sunshine girl coming out next month! cant wait!

message 3733: by Deniz (new)

Deniz | 12 comments Jen- hi Jen!! Congrats on your marriage!

Caitlin- that's so good to know! I don't mind long books as long as the story doesn't drag on. If it's too long though I think I can see myself reading other books in between or while I'm reading it! I'm reading specials right now as well, it's taking me forever to read since I feel like the story is just dragging on and repeating itself.

message 3734: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin V (books_and_boba) Jen- Welcome Jen :) I'm Caitlin, so cool to meet other people!

Deniz- aw yes I know what you mean. I don't think Outlander repeats itself but it has a Scottish twist to everything and I think Diana took extra time to explain every detail so it just takes forever, but yeah I do find myself switching books every now and then

Morgan Henschen (vampmom1415) Hello and many greetings!
I'm Morgan aka M.N.Henschen. I'm actually a brand new author, and I just released a fantasy YA novel with a slight steampunk twist. In addition to that, I am married, and I'm a mommy to an angel, a 1 year old boy, and another little boy due to make an appearance any day now.

My favorite books are Lord of the Rings, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Giver (the whole series), and the Harry Potter series. I just finished reading Adventure Hunters: Similitude by Cody Martin.

Zara | 12 comments your book sounds interesting Morgan. What's it called? I might want to read it.

message 3739: by Morgan (new)

Morgan Henschen (vampmom1415) Thank you all! The name of the book is Line of Kavanagh: New Light Rising.

Here's the synopsis. :)

Unlike the princess she'd hoped to be when she was chosen as the next ruler of Ardara, Andolyn Grace McNeil has been on the run from her prince for more than a year. Her nation is in utter ruin, and she carries a knowledge that could push Ardara to the brink of civil war. Walking the edge of a blade, she runs into a unique duo of wanderers: Barden, a lovable poet and musician, and Spade, a roguish thief and
magician. Through the two of them, Andolyn will find help from the most unexpected people, hope in the most unlikely places, and strength where she never expected to see it: in
herself. Through a journey of self discovery, Andolyn reminds Ardara's people that life can be better than it is. She shows them that they are strong enough to take back what has been stolen from them. She reminds them of the Line of Kavanagh.

I watched the Pilot episode of Delerium (it was apparently cancelled)and even though I was interested in it, mainly because I really love the series, it wasn't much like the book. Although the story usually gets altered in the transfer to screen.

message 3749: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin V (books_and_boba) Yeah, I didn't watch it because I heard it was sooo unfaithful to the book and I wanted the story to stay the same and decided to no watch it. I really liked the trilogy :) haha

I was upset when I found out it was cancelled and then I found out it was a book series and I got excited. Some people told me it wasn't great. What do you think?
