Julia (brightboldandbookish) Hi everyone! My name is Julia and I am currently in my third year at university. My favourite book is more like a favourite series and that would be the Chronicles of Ixia by Maria V. Snyder and my favourite author would probably be a toss up between Sarah J. Maas and Maggie Stiefvater ;)

Hi Jamie, Helen here. I did a bit of home schooling myself due to my daughter not being well, it was a lot of fun during a worrying time.
Let us know what you like so we can suggest some more stuff, including some out-of-left of-field items since you're an eclectic reader.

I enjoy historical fiction, paranormal, fantasy, steampunk, classics, pretty much anything lol I'm not a big fan of romance or contemporary.

message 4956: by Helen (new)

Helen Bell (helenbellauthor) | 13 comments You probably read Bernard Cornwell and Holly Black already then, have you tried Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series (Harry Potter meets Sherlock Holmes with a spot of Neverwhere), or Kate Summerscale's The Suspicions of Mr Whicher or The Wicked Boy? Technically what she writes is not historical fiction, but she tells great stories.

message 4957: by Jo (new)

Jo Ho (jo_ho) | 2 comments Hi everyone! Having been an avid reader my whole life - I love YA, particularly The Hunger Games and The Immortal Instruments (basically anything with kickass female leads), and also fantasy series like The Belgariad by David Eddings. I'm now trying my hand at self-publishing that all important first book, a YA thriller called WANTED)

I'm a screenwriter by trade (I created the BBC action fantasy kid's show, SPIRIT WARRIORS) which stars Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones, Star Wars:The Force Awakens and Marvel's upcoming Iron Fist) and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange, Marco Polo).

I specialise in high concept ideas so if you want monsters or dystopia starring a teen female lead, then I'm your girl. If like me, you're a geek obsessed with Buffy, then you'll probably like my work :)

I'm newly joined to GR and in dire need of some friends so do drop me a line - I'm nice, I promise!

In the meantime, happy reading! - Jo

message 4962: by Paul (new)

Paul West (paulwwest) My name is Paul West. I am a freelance writer and novelist. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I still claim to be a “Prune Picker,” though I now make my home in Taylorsville, Utah.

The rustic San Francisco Bay Area countryside, the quaint small town where I grew up, and the colorful people who once lived there, have all teamed to fertilize my ever-churning mind with stories yearning to be told.

From my earliest days in high school, my English teachers saw some raw writing ability in me, both for fiction and non-fiction, and urged me to pursue my dream of being a writer. In college my creative writing professors also encouraged me to mold my ability into a talent.

After settling on a career as an environmental biologist, where I've written numerous technical publications, the stories swarming through my mind kept crying to get out. So I began writing fiction, but only as a hobby at first. I have recently finished my first novel, "BRIDGETOWN HIGH," and now I am working on a sequel. I intend to keep letting my stories out through future novels.

I am the originator and former moderator of a private critique known as “The Writer’s Pen,” a sub forum in the “Authors by Design” web site (now defunct). I am also a member of Query Tracker forum; and Children's Writer's & Illustrator's forum; Utah Children’s Writers forum; among others. In addition to my writing, my wife and I enjoy spending time with our four children and fourteen grandchildren, gardening, reading, traveling, and researching our family histories.

Nitzia Hernandez (nixxia_1) | 3 comments Hi Everyone, I'm Nitzia

I Love, Love, Love to read. Mainly Fantasy but I reach out to different genres when I get recommendations or hear about highly rated books and authors. Quick facts about my love for reading, I can't live knowing I didn’t finish a book and I definitely do not skip chapters (it's almost like a pet peeve for me) so no matter how bad or boring it gets I push myself to finish it all. I also have a tiny obsession with hardcover books so if you know any pretty ones let me know!

I really love fantasy and supernatural type books. Romance is nice too. I started up a book blog this year as a way to get back into reading (I usually get overwhelmed by school halfway through the semester and kinda just stop reading anything non-academic). Reading has always helped me sort of unwind, so I'm trying to make more time for it as a way to destress and it's going pretty well! J.J. Melvin (writerjjmelvin) | 3 comments My name is JJ Melvin. I am the author of a YA series called The Four Points Saga, my free debut book is being released in 4 days, Dec. 12, and I am excited to get to know some YA fans.

5 things you may not know about me.
1. I had a child when I was very young and raised her on my own, often working multiple jobs in order to do so.

2. I am married now to a wonderful man and I have 2 beautiful children.

3. Even though I modeled when I was younger, I would guess that no one knew then that I have always been insecure about my looks.

4. My father was a life-long Air Force man who died at the age of 51 from the same condition I have recently been diagnosed with.

5. In the first grade I was awarded with the coveted title "Future Novelist" and now I can proudly say that prediction came true.

My trials, tribulations and triumphs are all a part of me. My experiences help add depth to my stories and characters. This is an exciting journey for me and I am thrilled to share my often-silent voice with you.

J.J. Melvin (writerjjmelvin) | 3 comments I just found a new author I love, she's not YA either, but she's good.
Her name is Kerry Londsdale and she wrote Everything We Keep. My sister swears by The girl on the train. I'm going to read that next, have you read it? I'll check out the other authors you've recommended. Thanks

message 4998: by A.D. (new)

A.D. Grey (thesidhe) Ello lovelies, my name is Alex. I am super new to group things, but I don't really have anyone to talk about books with in real life, so it would be super cool if I could make some friends...oh dear, that sounds super pathetic. Haha, er..

My favorite books are: 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami, Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause, and the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld.

Favorite authors include Neil Gaiman and Kelley Armstrong.

I mainly read YA, but not strictly limited to that. I cannot read things that seem too realistic though, because I lose touch with reality and often can't differentiate between what is real and not. So fantasy is my best friend.

That's enough about me, I hope to meet some nice people, and get some new and interesting book recommendations. :)
