Vicki What comments do you have on Holling's "Perfect" family? How do you feel it alters throughout the book? Do you feel there is any relationship between his family and the concept of using "defeat to grow" that was discussed in the book?

Anna The family reminded me of the stereotypical suburban family--the working dad, the detached mom, the rebel sister, and the torn son. The dad wasn't very likeable and didn't seem to grow at all in the book and wanted to hold on to his version of the All-American dream. The mom would make baby steps to perhaps growing--in a "sequel" I picture her tossing down her cigs and getting on the back of a Hog and heading out West :). Heather became stronger and was very compassionate and realized that sometimes you have to ask for help. Holling definitely grew from his experiences and was perceptive to the needs of others. He was one of those kids that teachers like--he has spunk, but definitely does his own thing. I liked the sibs, didn't like the dad, and the mom was a wimp.
