The show is really good. But so are the books. I've read the first 2 books, and I plan on reading the 3rd book soon. It's totally worth reading.

I think there is no show better than game of thrones, but also George Martin is for me one of the best fantasy authors, his books are really a piece of art.
About the characters they are quite a few but not hard to follow. They are a lot of names, yes A LOT, but whenever a name is mentioned again Martin will remind you what was known about him. That's why I don't pay much attention to them. I'm on the third book right now. You should really try them, they are great!!!
