When you lightning, either in pic or in real life, what color do you usually see?

Lightning is suppose to be white...which it is...
Inside the Tornadoes..well it looks more like a fire, or an explosion. The darkness of the tornado in itself is odd, especially combine with the clouds in the sky. Then you never see it touch the ground in the image...(but that can be explained)
