Combining author

Just hoping to confirm what I did was at least partially right. The book The Princess of Clèves was written by Madame de La Fayette. There were 16 different name entries for her: ie Mdm de lafayette, Madame delafayette, one was all 12 of her names, Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne Lafayette, la Comtessa de La Fayette, and on and on. I went to World cat and they listed the author of The Princess of Cleaves as: La Fayette, Madame de. So I used that and merged all of the author entries to that.

If you look at the book covers, many of them are different then that i.e. Madame de Lafayette.

Did I do right or do I need to go back and change them to something else.

As an after though I should have asked first.

We actually use the Library of Congress as the determinant. And avoid titles (like "Madame"). So I suggest Marie-Madeleine de LaFayette.

But it certainly can be confusing when authors have so many name variants! And good work combining them.
